Medium Rare - Cleveland Park Ratings and Reviews
I used to be a Medium Rare fanatic when I lived in DC. I moved away a couple of years ago, and every time I go back to visit I do my best to visit Medium Rare. I think it has been going downhill for the last year or so. The dinner is good still, but this time we went for brunch and my boyfriend got the eggs benedict. It literally tasted like dog food. In addition to his meal not being good, the floors felt as if they had been waxed like a bowling alley. I almost fell 3 times. Also, the women's bathroom was filthy. Next time I am in DC I don't think I will come here.
Made a 6 pm reservation for the family on a weekday. They know their process well and executed it perfectly. The real benefit is quick service (due to the limited menu). The steak and their bread was great; salad and fries were good. It filled up by 7 pm, which elevated the noise level but it was not unreasonable. If you want less noise, show up early.
service was lacking a bit, gnats were everywhere, food was cold, we were not told about cocktails or any specials. super disappointed in the level of service we received and the quality of the food. the fries were amazing and prepared to order but the meat had clearly been sitting a while...
In a world of sameness, it is refreshing to find someone doing something different. Medium Rare is just one of those places. It is like going to your friends house for dinner and they are a good cook. Food was very good and done well. Yes, it is tight seating so it gets loud. Little heavy on the pepper and fries could use a little more refinement but for the price, it is a great meal. We will be back for sure.
If you like 2 helpings of good steak, fries, and a salad at a fantastic price, Medium Rare is your place. It only serves one thing: steak, so you order your drinks and your steak temperature and that's it. And because they only do one thing, you get a great price at about $25. It is a great place for groups! Give it a try!
Diners should know ahead of time that this restaurant offers only one set menu: mediocre thin cut flank steak, decent fries, and a totally insipid salad. Price is good, but if you want a real steak, with other options for those who prefer lamb or fish or something else, go to a real steak house (and pay more). Pop music on the restaurant's speakers was way too loud, making conversation difficult (why do restaurants feel like they need to pipe in music at all?). Free seconds was nice, and our server was efficient, but if you go here, know what to expect. It's not Morton's.....
A group of 3 had brunch on Sunday morning. The service was pretty fair, and they kept the bottomless drinks filled up decently. Two of the others first courses came out (salad and fruit bowl), but the yogurt parfait ordered by myself did not. I asked the server to just bring me a salad, after the others had finished their first course.
The steak was good (perhaps from the delicious sauce) and temperature was cool, we ordered it medium rare. One of the other servers notice one of my friends glass was cracked, which we hadn't noticed. She replaced it with a larger one.
We were visiting from Europe and wanted to eat a good steak so we made a reservation at the "Medium Rare" without knowing that they are offering only 1 preset menu. First we were a little astonished but that soon changed to complete satisfaction, as the 3 course menu turned out to be really excellent starting with delicious bread, very good salad and excellent thinly cut meat in a delicious sauce and great French fries. Also the apple pie we shared was great !
The stuff was really nice and friendly, too ! They even ran outside in the heavy rain for organizing a taxi for us !
We are sure to visit again some day !
We went for brunch on a Saturday and the service was quite slow. We had to ask multiple times to have our bottomless mimosas filled up. The food was very good and a good value, but the noise level was horrible- we could barely hear each other at a normal sized table. Overall, I would not recommend this place if you want a more laid back brunch and good service. That being said, the steak frites was great, and the mimosas too!
Tina was one of the most attentive servers we've ever had for a brunch experience. We did the bottomless brunch for $24.95 and even when I changed my mind about my entree (after receiving it), I was able to get a different item without hassle. I would recommend going for the bottomless option (get the Steak & Eggs) and asking for Tina as your server.
Steak frites styled on a restaurant in Paris called the Entrecote. The food at Medium Rare is limited to a fixed menu of steak (culotte cut which is very thin), fries and a starter salad for $20. There is a portabella mushroom option for non-meat eaters, but we did not try it. The meat was tasty. The sauce was missing something especially when compared to the Entrecote in Paris. The french fries were good and the salad was fine. Everyone can get seconds on steak and fries, and we were able to take ours home. Desserts are $9 and the portions are generous. We tried carrot cake, good but not great, and key lime pie (Pie Sisters) which was tart but too much graham crust for me. Overall it was a good meal at a very reasonable price, and service was freindly and suitably attentive. My only real complaint would be the noise level. I was with my parents, and we could barely hear each other even though they re-seated us near the front windows.
This was my first time at medium rare (went for brunch), and I was not altogether impressed. It looked nice outside with umbrellas, but we opted to sit inside since it was very hot. We were near a group of about 40 very rowdy guys, and the place echos, so we had to yell to hear each other and our server. The bottomless drinks were ok - they were definitely very low on actual alcohol, and our server even mentioned that the group next to us drank most of what they had, so you knew they were trying to stretch it. However, we had to constantly go out of our way to wave down a server to get them refilled, and they were often empty for long periods of time. The food was not as great as I expected from other reviews. Two of us got the eggs Benedict - it looked unappetizing when it came out because of the cubed steak and sauce, and didn't taste much better. There was bread in there somewhere but it got soaked and mushy because of all the stuff on it. The fries, yogurt parfait, and starter bread, however, were very good! Definitely started strong, then went downhill. Overall, I probably won't choose to go back for brunch.
We had the Sunday brunch with all you can eat steak frites and bottomless bloody marys, screwdrivers, and mimosas. The steak was cooked perfectly to order for both of us, mine medium rare, hers medium well. the gravy was very tasty. We ate outside and watch the people stroll by. The service was very good and attentive. Will do again.
Definitely a great value for brunch! The only thing that would make it better is if there were a few more brunch options, maybe an omelette. The service was great, and the food was delicious. A great deal for a bottomless, and I liked that they had more than just mimosas
Medium Rare in Cleveland Park has decent streak and very good frites. But it continues an annoying policy of not seating you until all the guests in your party have arrived. I get it when it's Friday or Saturday and time at the table is money. But on a Tuesday when business is slow? We would have gladly ordered drinks bit instead had to stand around for 5 minutes on a rainy night. This happened to us last year. Pretty sure we won't be back.
With only 1 meal on the menu we expected that it would look and be somewhat like the photo on their website. The beef tasted like it had been soaked in MSG to make it tender and it was overcooked. The french fries did not look anything like the photo on the website. No one ever asked if everything was ok and never checked on us and then they came with a second helping which was actually hotter and better than the first serving but we were not expecting it so I had already eaten the overdone first serving.
The salad was fresh and the salad dressing was excellent. The sauce that was served with the beef was also very good. It was a pleasant neighborhood location and we enjoyed the outdoor seating but our table was on top of the subway grate so we felt a wind and noise every time the train went underneath us. All in all we were disappointed in the experience.
Great value for prix fix and food was served well.
Music was so loud we had to yell over it and often just stopped talking. Asked manager to turn it down or provide quiet table but there's no such seating at this place. Sorry, but blaring Bieber and Timberlake over dinner just doesn't do it for me.
I would not return but my 20 something son and friend loved it especially for a $20 steak dinner.
