Medium Rare - Cleveland Park Ratings and Reviews
Waited well passed our reservation time for a table. Food was okay, definitely not impressive. Service from hosts and waiters seemed to suffer due to the high volume for brunch. Dinner service may be a different story, but Sunday brunch was not a great experience.
Medium Rare is a great place to go when you don't want to cook but don't want anything over the top. It's great place to meet with friends on a weeknight. The food is simple but good and they will accommodate by bringing more salad instead of fries. I do wish they offered some sort of vegetables. All in all a good reasonably priced restaurant.
It's nice not to have a lot of choice sometimes. Medium Rare offers great steak, fries, salad, bread. We had a couple bottles of the Bordeaux and it was great. We finished up with key lime pie and carrot cake. Both great. This place is solid. It may not knock your socks off, but it won't disappoint you. Everything is delicious! And who can resist salad+steak+fries fir $20?
I've been coming out to DC from California for work on and off since November and I kept hearing good things about Medium rare... I am so happy we decided to give it a try. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. We will be back for business for sure!
Medium Rare isn't a hot spot, it's not a place where you need to dress to impress, it is never "trending" in the city. Medium Rare is however one of the most relaxing nights out with a few friends. It's very "come as you are". I love going there to catch up with my friends. I don't have to over think what I'm wearing, we get there and there no 45 minute debate of what to order, no need to take 485 pictures to share on social media. Walk in, sit down, tell them how you want your steak...and you're done. Now you can talk with your dinner guests, break bread and share some quality friend time. In this crazy competitive city of who's the best, Medium Rare is simple and consistent and there is a lot to be said for that! It's just nice to go out have a relaxing time.
Also they play great music, usually 80s or Classic Rock. I always bring a bottle of wine to class it up a little (corkage fee is just $12).
The carrot cake (which I think they get from Pie Sisters) is just a decadent way to finish up the night there!
As per the title we had a reservation for 4 people and had to wait an hour for the table to show up. We were on time and ready to go but were told to wait for a bit. We watched the table we were eventually sat at get split into two 2-tops, two groups ate and left before the same table was replaced as a four top and we were seated at it. The food and drinks were good and if you have a better experience getting a seat I would recommend it. However I felt particularly frustrated watching two other parties eat their meals before we were sat at the same table that was empty when we arrived, on time, with a reservation.
This would be a great place to go for brunch if you didn't actually want to talk to anyone in your group, or you want to lose your voice while doing so. The food was delicious and you can't beat the price, which includes bottomless bloodies, mimosas, screwdrivers, coffee, or orange juice.
Every year, my friends and I visit Zoo Lights and grab dinner at Medium Rare to warm up afterwards. It is such a different approach to a great steak place in DC. I love how connected to the Cleveland Park Neighborhood and NW D.C. It is a lot of fun to get two rounds of steak and fries. It is very nice to have to make two decisions (what wine to drink with dinner and how to cook the steak). I was a little surprised by how few staff there were on-hand, the restaurant was full (and it seemed as many of them were reservations), which made the service a little slow. But it was fine for a relaxing Monday evening.
I have been to dinner at Medium Rare about 3 times since it opened a few years ago. I have always enjoyed it. Brunch just wasn't as good as dinner. The steak was cut so thin that it was near impossible to cook it medium rare and was over cooked. The fries were good but not quite as fresh as I remembered in the past.
The music selection was fantastic for Sunday afternoon. Our server was great and explained the serving style is different for brunch and dinner. Very attentive and kept our drinks filled.
What I love about coming here is that I always know exactly how much the meal is going cost. This restaurant is consistently good every. single. time. The hostesses are outstanding--there was a mix up with our brunch reservation last year that was our fault which ended with us missing our table. As we walked away trying to figure out what to do, my boyfriend got a phone call--they'd found us a table. It really saved the day for us . The brunch is amazing. The dinner is amazing. We're always pumped to come here. I would recommend it to anyone.
My friends and I brunched at the Cleveland Park Medium Rare just before the holidays started to gear up. We had a lot to catch up about and I was thankful to have made a reservation since the tiny host area was packed! We were seated by the window which was big and bright and provided a lot of wonderful sunlight. Our waiter was a bit slammed but made sure to swing by and at least get our drinks ordered. Luckily the bottomless option allows you to switch things up, so for instance, I wanted to start off with a Bloody Mary but I only wanted one of those before I switched to mimosas, not a problem — you can mix and match your bottomlesses! That was a pleasant surprise. The brunch menu, like the other menus here, is limited, but we enjoyed everything that we ordered and would definitely go back again.
Our waiter messed up the drink orders several times and they were basic coke, diet coke, cherry coke orders. Wasn't very good at listening to specifics in the meal order either i.e. steak sauce on the side, for example. Just lacked care for the customer's needs.
It was nice! I wish the salad was a little bit bigger, and I"m not sure that my cotes du rhone was as complex as the menu made it out to be. Stead was great, and we were in and out of there in an hour, they were almost too quick with the food! Will go back.Beautiful setting, great service, cheerful place.
Having gone once before to dinner at Medium Rare, we were happy to try it for brunch, a prix fixe offering at $23. It includes unlimited Bloody Marys, Mimosas or Screwdrivers. However, it does not include much food. The appetizers of a yoghurt parfait and fresh fruit were quite pleasant. However, their Steak and Eggs Benedict was a huge disappointment. The steak pieces were tough and well done, the advertised portobello was MIA, the Hollandaise was more of a cheese sauce and the portion was very small, though augmented by quite good frites. On inquiry, the server admitted that the brunch was primarily geared to drinking, not eating and he brought an extra food portion to these very light drinkers.
I will return for dinner; not brunch.
This place is usually packed, so get there early. Fantastic fries and salad. Cute cotton candy appetizer. Attentive staff. I didn't realize they give you seconds on steak! I am a vegetarian but had plenty to fill me up on fries, salad and bread. My dining partner loved the steak. The menu is fixed and very basic-- meat and potatoes, but they do that with aplomb. My only complaint was that the music in the dining room can be a little overpowering.
This place is great! Brunch is affordable and has perfect portions...the special sauce is incredible...the bottomless beverage part was also delicious! Excellent service as well. Awesome place, wish we lived locally and go weekly! My one regret - not ordering a side of special sauce to slather over my frites! Mmm!
We arrived for an 8:30 reservation on a Sunday night. There were few guests in the restaurant but the place looked like a big rush had just ended - multiple unbussed tables, etc. We were seated right away, but no one came to our table for over 5 minutes despite the fact that staff were everywhere. When our server finally appeared, he poured water then disappeared for another extended period. He finally came back and asked for our drink orders, and we told him we wanted to order. The food was good (although the second round of fries were fresher than the first), but the service left much to be desired. That was especially true in the context of a slow late Sunday night meal.
My group has eaten at this location several times this year. Last Sunday's visit was off. The salad looked a little whiles and served without cheese. There was no lemonade and the staff seemed disorganized. They were definitely unfriendly. The meat dish was ok but the fries were as tasty as usual. Not sure if this was just one bad evening or if it was an indication that change is afoot at Medium Rare.
We will give it another chance in a few weeks.
I'm a steak fiend, but prefer my meat cooked. Medium Rare did something many other steak places in DC have been unable to do....They provided me my steak frites medium well! Kudos to the kitchen staff for being able to handle high volume brunch and present me and my table mates with steak cooked to our request - some medium rare and mine not! The choice of brunch starter of fruit cup (good mix of melons), yogurt parfait or salad provided nice balance. And the all you can drink mimosa or screwdriver kept coming. Lovely, tasty and enjoyable for Sunday brunch conveniently close to the Metro.
When Medium Rare first opened it was bustling and the food came out sizzling and looking and tasting fantastic. The past two times I've been there the place has been dead, and the steak has that limp, grey look of meat left under a heat lamp. If you live around the corner, go for it … steak and fries are hard to screw up. But otherwise I can't recommend the trip.
Monday's experience was disappointing. The tables were too close together; the server was a robot and I did not enjoy that his backside was practically in my plate when he was waiting on the table next to me; the salad and especially the bread were very nice, but the steak and frites were cold when served. I was dining with someone who had not eaten at Medium Rare before. She was disappointed that the server did not ask her if she wanted the sauce on the side. She does not enjoy sauce on her steak.
