Medium Rare - Capitol Hill Ratings and Reviews
Really cool concept to have TWO servings of steak come out timed 10 minutes apart. The steak was by no means a filet mignon from a high end restaurant, but was still better than a chain restaurant. For getting a salad, bread, steak and fries for $21/person, I'd say this place is packed with value and appropriately priced. Huge bonus: The service was outstanding!
I recommended the place to some old friends for us to meet and I was embarrassed to have hosted them there. Despite reading reviews that warned of the waitstaff rushing patrons, we tried going to the restaurant anyway, but did experience the same issue. They were not outright rude, but they were pushy and so I had to push back a few times with a smile on my face and they finally left us alone to enjoy our drinks, meal and conversation. The noise level was very high, although we could still engage in conversation (albeit we had to shout at one another to be heard). All of the above was tolerable and we even made light of it, but I was disappointed in the quality of the food. The steaks were extremely thin cut and even with the obligatory "second round" of meat serving, it felt more like we were getting the scrap pieces of meat that were left from the first round. You get what you pay for is the old adage. If you like a well cooked steak that has value, stay home and cook it yourself, or spend the extra money to go to a real steakhouse where they won't rush you out the door. Will not be going back, sorry.
Very loud and terrible music selection (at one point Linkin Park was playing...). Service was slow and meat was not medium rare, as requested. Considering how long it took to come out, I didn't expect the steak to be undercooked. Won't be returning to this location.
One order came out rare, even cold in the center twice. The request was for medium, warm all the way through. There was also a request for no pepper, order came with pepper. Orders corrected but frustrating. The restaurant was practically empty when we arrive but we were put at a table which was not tight on the stand so wobbled. That should have been the last table used. Service also poor. Made a reservation and noted it was for a birthday and told the waiter. Not even a scoop of ice cream offered. Disappointed because we used to love this place.
There was a hair in my fruit and no compensation was given other than being offered another fruit cup, which I did not want because I was so grossed out. The server did not seem to care that there was a hair in my food and after I wrote feedback on my check:"HAIR IN FOOD - UNACCEPTABLE" he simply said "thanks for the feedback"... I was not impressed. Additionally, I got the steak and eggs as my entree and the eggs were so runny (I ordered them poached, not just the yolk was runny but also the egg white) I could hardly eat them with my steak. Also the mimosas hardly had any champagne.
We've been here before and have had good service but this last visit we came at 9pm on a Saturday and the service was horrible. We waited à considerable amount of time for the waiter to bring a second helping of steak and fries and only after I requested it. Then no sooner had I finished my last bite the waiter was taking my plate away. Same for my wife. It was clear they wanted to close and go home but we felt rushed. It would have been easier to go to a fast food restaurant. Totally disappointed with the service that Saturday evening. 😡
Great place to take your decisioned challenged friends. There is only one thing on the menu and you get served up seconds. They will accommodate your vegitarian friends with a portobello mushroom substitute. Unique dining - a winner for making an impression and for a fun night out. The wait staff is exceptional!
I've been to this restaurant quite a few times over my tenure in DC and I can tell you that as far as consistency goes, Medium Rare is at a consistent batting average; it's always a hit.
From their simple, straightforward menu to their amazing staff and management -- shout out to Alexandra for the great Lord of the Rings conversation -- I can't sing enough praise about this establishment.
10/10 -- will come back.
Here's a review on Sunday Brunch: $25 gets you a 3 course meal and all you can drink mimosas, screw drivers and bloody mary's. I liked the setting and atmosphere of the place, but that's about where the positives end. We didn't have an actual waiter (just had rotating bodies visit our table), the drinks were not strong at all (mostly orange juice), and the steak in my eggs benedict dish was really not good at all. I don't think I've ever not eaten an entire steak dish, but this steak tasted overcooked and had a weird grainy consistency that they tried to make up for by dousing in gravy.
I will say that I tried my friend's flat steak and it was way better, but just a little over-seasoned. Despite the lower brunch price, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for a bottomless option.
I love Medium Rare, but this was not my best experience there. The service was incredibly slow, not once did we get checked on, we had to flag servers down to help us/refill our drinks. Additionally, our food was cold when they brought it out. Very disappointing experience.
The price is great, and the food is delicious! The music is too loud to have a conversation without screaming across the table, for parties of 6 or more, forget it. They refuse to turn it down either. They say something about ambiance, but speaking loudly to be heard isn't a win. For a party of 2 or 4 it's manageable. Service was okay. I've been a few times and it's great alone or with a party of 2 since you're close to each other.
This dinner tonight was for my son's 29th birthday-- I even put that in the reservation. They never said anything to us about that-- why even ask on the reservation-... The waiter came very quick and served our bread and salad and then it was another 45 minutes before we were served dinner-- and this was only after my husband told them we never got our dinner. They thought we had eaten and gave dinner to both tables on either side of us. This was terrible and the waiter never even stopped to ask if everything was ok. And 2 of us asked for medium steak and we both got rare---... would not go back.
Great place for some good food at a reasonable price. Only down side - we went around 6pm and it was very noisy. The food also came out extremely fast (almost too fast), which I'm assuming was because food is pre-prepared since it is a set menu.
Still, good food and great prices.
We have been here before and had an amazing experience, but this time the food was cold and the service was not up to par. You would think that if you only cook one thing, it would be prefect. As stated, the steak and fries were cold (both servings), and the steak was too thick for the type cut it is and what we had had in past. Very disappointed this time around. That being said, we will probably be back hoping for the same experience we had there the previous 2 times we ate at Medium Rare. Regarding ambiance, the music was too loud and when we asked to have them turn it down, we were told it could not be done.
We decided to try the restaurant on recommendation of a friend, but found that it wasn't for us. It would be a good value for those who enjoy sliced beef with gravy as an entree since it is a set menu. The portions were generous and our plates were served quickly. Not terrible, but we prefer a bit more adventurous meals.
