Medium Rare - Capitol Hill Ratings and Reviews
The food was fantastic, but the service felt rushed; we had barely finished our plates before the next course arrived. We were also surprised when we received a bottle of water (which we had to pay for) instead of glasses of water at the beginning of the meal.
Had a nice meal recently. The format is a bit unique in that steak frites with salad is THE option. The salad was fresh and tasty. The steak is flavorful flank cut and has a brown pepper sauce. Refills were offered but the first round was plenty for. Fun concept for a group.
Horrible experience. Extremely loud. Very understaffed. I ordered a dish that had what the menu called “the perfect poached egg” which was essentially a raw egg cracked on my plate. I have never before asked for a new dish to be brought out to me, but I couldn’t eat a raw egg. When I asked for an egg that was actually cooked, my waiter said it was no problem but then a manager came over to my table and very rudely asked if I knew what a poached egg was and proceeded to bring me a plate with a boiled egg on it. Will not be returning and don’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Great meal. The prix fixe menu is super easy - no need to take time away from visiting with your companions to agonize over menu choices. The salad, steak-frites and secret sauce were all delicious. Fresh off the grill second servings are a bonus. An affordable beer and wine menu is also available. This visit was early on a weeknight, so the place was especially quiet at that hour. At other times, it's quite a lively setting. We'll definitely be back!
Had to wait 20 mins for a reservation, the restaurant was dirty, broken glass on the floor, crammed full of people. You get what you pay for if you come here.
Once we were seated, our waitress took great care of us. But everything leading up to that was very frustrating. Save yourself the trouble, spend an extra $5 and get a brunch worth remembering (or not remembering).
We thoroughly enjoyed the food, really great value for the money. Best bread since
we were in Paris. The only negative was one individual hostess? waitress? not sure
her exact role. She made us feel as if we were an inconvenience. Asked to change
a dollar, she stated we don't have change here. Just very condescending and negative. The
rest of the staff was great, but to be honest we will try another location just not to have
to have contact with her.
The service was absolutely terrible. We called in to tell the host we’d be a few minutes late to our reservation. No one answered, and the host was rude when I noted I had called in advance and no one picked up. Our server Carmen was lethargic at times, rarely making eye contact with any of us to avoid refills or general help. The food was incredible and at a great value, but we were served only a few rounds of drinks compared to the bottomless aspect of the brunch advertised on the menu. Ultimately I would not go back there despite the great food due to the appallingly pitiful service. It was as if the people running the place were very much over their heads. That, in addition to the fact that the patrons seemed to visibly (and audibly) annoy the staff, who commented to one another how busy the establishment was, created quite a laughable dining experience, especially for a restaurant so highly regarded.
A good brunch, simple menu with great options. If you are looking for a classic, DC bottomless brunch, this isn't your place. If you're looking to have a few drinks and enjoy a good meal, I would highly recommend this spot.
I definitely prefer it as a dinner place.
Here's the conundrum. How can such a delicious restaurant have such off-putting, rude, dismissive management? The two women who appear to be management are both sour-faced, rude, and obnoxious. They are rude when you arrive, rude when they come to your table, and make it appear you're annoying them by coming to their restaurant.
Now, the good. The food is amazing. Steak is cooked to perfection, fries are delicious and the bread out of this word. Their dessert menu is nothing but comfort.
Eggs were so raw that even the biggest runny egg lover at our table couldn't stomach his, and it took too long to replace them since we couldn't get our waiter's attention. In fact the waiter completely ignored us even though the place was pretty empty for 80% of our meal. We paid for bottomless drinks but were only given 2 in 2 hours. We only got our second drink because I embarrassingly flagged down a guy who was busing tables. I'll give ambiance points for their cute holiday decorations, but that's it.
Great food and value. However, the steak is inconsistently cooked. Wife’s medium looked exactly like my medium rare. Also, on the 2nd serving, it all came out well done and tough.
One other complaint is the noise level. This could just be me, but I find it very difficult to speak over the music. Maybe I am just old and boring.
Overall, though, great value and fantastic gravy for the steak and fries.
