Whoever wrote that this is the best restaurant in Hanalei must not be a foodie....The ambience is sterile, the windows are so cloudy you can't see outside even if you have a window seat and the food is bland and overly pricey....highly over rated and a major, major disapointment.
Awesome experience, beautiful oceanfront setting. Nice menu and drinks. Thanks to Candace service was lovely. Highly recommend
We have dined here many times before. This was our worst experience. Many of the items we attempted to order were not available. They were out of them. The food we did get was relative tasteless and not up to par. They might have had a substitute chef, but we questioned that because it was for Valentine's Day. We will not be coming back soon.
Enjoyed watching the waves from the oceanside windows. Food was very good, with a Mediterranean slant (no surprise) and service was excellent. Nice find in the remote Hanalei area.
Had heard good things about this restaurant so wanted to try. Food was overpriced and average at best. Onion soup was the worst I ever had. No flavor at all. Grilled fish was tasty but rice and bok choy also had no flavor. Nice view but you couldn't see out of the windows because they were so dirty. Would not return.
A bit of drive with more traffic than expected so remotely. Several one lane bridges with some drivers not following protocol.
We arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation, and were seated at an oceanfront table within a couple minutes. It took the waitress a good while to get to us. When she did, our drink orders were taken, but it took a long time to get served. Basically, service was very slow. I guess it didn't matter, because the view is the best!
I ordered the steamed clams that were out of this world, but the paella (special of the day) was rather dry, although fairly tasty. We wouldn't order it again.
All-in-all, it was a lunch to remember. It was a bit noisy (young child pounding on something with utensils, and another behind us screaming and crying) but the view was amazing! We'll consider the Mediterranean Gourmet again, but it might lose out to a beachside picnic.
This is always on the list of places to eat at while on Kauai. We especially like to go the nights they have live music and hula. The food is always good and the location is great.
Even though this is one of the higher rated restaurants on the island, we found the meals to be lacking in flavor. Disappointing experience.
Blustery day on the north shore so after some beach walking we decided to stop for lunch. I love falafel and this time I'd say the sandwich was "good"--nothing over the top. The hebi wrap, by comparison, was truly outstanding! We sat by the window to marvel at the waves without getting wet--nice!
Meal was tepid, at best. Not very creative in taste or presentation. Expensive. Also, they did not receive the OpenTable confirmation.
View of ocean is biggest plus. Annual visit. Prime rib special was better than average; scalloped potatoes excellent; green bean portion miniscule. Chicken on kabob was overcooked (dry), but rice excellent; green bean portion miniscule. Baklava excellent.
Visit this restaurant each time we visit Kauai! Enjoy the food ... and service is consistently good!
Our family of 4 adults and 2 children ages 10 and 7 enjoyed the meal. MG has a large menu of typical Mediterranean cuisine, such as house-made hummus and dolmas, plus a variety of dishes associated with local produce and not associated with Mediterranean food. We shared the local produce and the meat and fish dishes. It was a much bigger and more modern structure than expected. There was a local musician who drew members of a wedding to dance and sing. Though it was considerably beyond Hanalei to the northeast, the drive was worth the reward of the delicious meal and senic beauty.
The staff is very nice, The location is great, but the food is average. This is still a place to visit. The waterfront location is great. The menu is interesting and varied.
***Please "DISREGARD" this so called "star" rating ~ unfortunately it was the only way to submit this review.
We were disappointed when our Thanksgiving reservation for 5 made was not made aware that their regular menu (the one we based on reservation on) would not be available. Upon arriving from our rental house in Princeville (over a very dark and winding road) we realized that there were only two dinner options available ~ traditional turkey dinner or the Hawaiian turkey dinner. We chose to bail on our reservation (a difficult thing to do to any restaurant on Thanksgiving) and seek out an alternate option that came WITH choices. Thankfully we found five available bar stools at the amazing Westin in Princeville and gladly took them. Our server/bartender Logan was excellent, fun and presented us with dinner options, along with delicious adult beverages. Everyone's meal, in addition to our drinks of choice, were delicious and beyond our expectations. Many thanks to the Westin Princeville and Logan for helping us to salvage our family Thanksgiving dinner and time together.
Our second visit to Mediterranean Gourmet during our vacation on Kauai.... in one week. The food is exceptionally good, so much so, that as we were leaving after dinnner walking past the open kitchen, I was able applaud the cooks where they could see me! My gesture was much appreciated by the staff! The service is top notch! We highly recommend Mediterranean Gourmet!
We enjoyed our delicious meals at the Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant. The service was very good, the food was exceptional. We plan to return before we leave Kauai!
We stopped here for lunch since we were visiting the North Shore of Kauai. Nice to find a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine. It was quiet. Service was excellent. We all enjoyed our meal.
Had a wonderful meal while visiting Kauai. Pasta dish was huge (wished we'd shared), but delicious. Plus, hubby's fish was great (not a bite left on his plate).
While the view is beautiful because it's close to the beach and sits on a grassy piece of property, the food was not good. The service was excellent but that could have been because there was hardly anyone else there.
Food was good, desserts were great! Waitress was so personable. Cocktail special was outstanding. Will return when we revisit Kauai. The view is outstanding.
Mediterranean Gourmet is on the property of the Hanalei Colony Resort in Haena, west of Hanalei on Kauai's North Shore. It is large and comfortable and often almost empty, which we hope will change so the restaurant can remain. It's also the only restaurant towards the Cliffs after Hanalei. It's worth the drive.
The menu is pretty authentically Middle Eastern/Mediterranean, to the extent that if you or your dining companions don't care for hummus, garbanzo beans or tzatziki, they'd better like racks of lamb or filet, because their choices will be limited. My husband and I shared a rack of lamb and one of us was 100% happy with it, while the other found the chops to be less tender than desired. They also had some chicken preparations and at least one vegetarian option.
The service was delightful. Extensive bar selections. I think many people go in the late afternoon for drinks and various appetizer or tapas-type options.
We read great reviews about this place and decided we'd drive the 1.5 hours from poipu to try it. We went for lunch - their dinner may be better. We were terribly disappointed. I've had much better Mediterranean food. We tried the tzatziki as an app - the presentation was lousy and it tasted just ok. We also tried the gyro and falafel wrap - definitely nothing to write home about. I did see someone order the watermelon salad which looked fresh and delicious.
Frankly it was better than almost all the recent reviews we had read about it however the only thing we could rate as excellent was the service..
Food was very good but overpriced for this type of cuisine & portion sizes.
We had guest visiting the island. We took them to your restaurant. The service, food, etc was so good !!! The flavors in all the dishes were excellent. The menu was inclusive of vegetarians as well. And the Mid East dishes...excellent.
My only complaint was the size of the portions. A side of vegetables was just two small broccoli spears. The flatbread items...delicious...but quite small. The beet salad was amazing.....but...very tiny for the price.
Again....thank you for a delicious wonderful evening with guest. But....bigger portions ...please.
Half-price wine on Wednesday and Friday is great! The music was a little overpowering.
Great restaurant on North Shore of Kauai. It's a little off the beaten path, but well worth the effort. Food is great, prices are on par with similar restaurants in the area, and they have live music most nights of the week. View is quite spectacular and the ambiance is nice as well. It's not super-fancy but that is a big part of its Appel! Comfortable, friendly service. If you enjoy Mediterranean food, this is a great place!
Great location to match the food. Live Hawaiian music.
The location is wonderful right next to the beach. You enjoy your meal while looking out over the ocean and the blaze orange clouds from the sunset (which sets behind the mountains). The staff was very friendly and courteous. The wine was great and the food was good. During Saturday night they had live music. The musician was excellent! We really enjoyed his guitar playing and singing. It is a great place to come, relax next to the ocean and enjoy a nice glass of wine.
Overall for the location out in hanalei its a good restuarant.
I would like to see the beet salad improved with some more culinary skill put into it.
We were a party of 8. The evening was quiet at the restaurant and not busy. It took forever to get our meals and drinks. Plus when we ready to pay...it took forever to get our bill.
Wonderful dining spot on the coast overlooking the sea, featuring excellent and innovative middle-eastern and Mediterranean cuisine with a good wine list and reasonable wine pairings, and local musical entertainment. We always make it a stop when we're in Kauai. It's very much off the beaten path, requiring a drive along a twisty and narrow coastal road, but the experience is well worth the drive.
This is such a different but wonderful restaurant to eat at. The food was all freshly prepared, and there was something on the menu for absolutely everyone. Truly a hidden gem of Hanalei Bay.
Amazing views, great service and good food & music. Only complaint is that the dining room was dated.
Lovely setting, overlooking ocean with swaying palm trees . Food is very good but needs more to chose from, especially their appetizers.
Expected more vibrant flavors since they draw recipes from Morocco, Greece and other Mediterranean countries. Flavors were very subtle, to bland, to non existent. Staff (hostess, waitress and kitchen crew), were extremely friendly and welcoming.
This place has not been discovered. No crowds. Right on the ocean. Great food.
We were on vacation in Kauai, and this is a gem at the end of the road.
If the weather is good a great view, especially at sunset
