Medaterra Ratings and Reviews
We were a party of 10, where one needed no stairs, or bumps, wheelchair accessible.
The staff was more than accommodating - especially server "Princess".
The manager was excellent - directing us to their patio, accommodating the wheelchair and a slightly reduced sound level ( outside is actually quieter ).
The food was good - the appetizers being better than the entrees.
Eat the felafel, the hummus, & the calamari.
Dishes with eggplant ( all cold ) weren't to our group's liking - half onions.
The non- curried mussels we're outstanding.
The service is the star here.
Medaterra serves relatively inexpensive, but routine, Mediterranean food when you need a meal near a convention hotel. The lamb was presented as one of the best options, but it was flavorless and visually unappealing when many small chunks of meat were scattered on top of a salad.
The food was good for the price. The drinks were only ok (but really cheap). It was hot inside- like the AC was not really pumping air. Also, after multiple requests to add veggies to the hummus order (we had someone with food allergies), we never did receive the cucumber slices the server offered.
Food was good, and would go back, but this place is nothing special. Good outdoor dining, and happy hour specials are really good and apply all day, so it's a good place to meet up with friends if geography dictates this area. But would not choose to take an out of town friend here necessarily. There are far more interesting places for that kind of evening.
Since my meal had to be prepared without milk, cheese, or yogurt, I can understand that it might have been less interesting than usual. But my dining companion said her meal was also boring, and she ordered two appetizers as her main course that both sounded intriguing. The service was attentive and friendly, and the management bent over backwards to correct for an unclear description on their menu. The food came reasonably fast and was hot. The dining room is a bit noisy but it has a comfortable, causal atmosphere. We just expect Mediterranean food to be more flavorful.
Went here with a small group of friends. Offerings ranged from small plates to full entree portions. The menu was varied so something for everyone, and everyone enjoyed their selections. This is a new favorite location! Service was friendly and efficient too.
Picked Medaterra because it is a BYOB with no corkage fee - rare in the DC area. It was crowded and energetic, but as I had a reservation I got seated immediately. Noticed lots of people drinking GIANT frozen drinks and found out about their great happy hour deals. Service was good and the atmosphere (nothing fancy) is fine. The problem is the food. Or, I should say, some of it. Appetizers of shrimp scampi (ok) and roasted eggplant (NOT ok) were underwhelming. Steamed vegetables came out cold and still way too hard, with no - and I mean NO - seasoning whatsoever. The lamb chops, however, were delicious, really fine. The lamb shank was only slightly less wonderful. I may or may not go back again, but if I do, it's for the chops.
Went there for lunch on a weekday to find that the lunch menu, not posted on Open Table, is nothing like the dinner menu. It had a smattering of mezze plates as appetizers, but none of the Egyptian main dishes that attracted us in the first place. While the mezze were OK, they were nowhere as good as at Lebanese Taverna just across the street. A bit of a disappointment, to be honest.
I love Medaterra so much. The staff are so kind and always make sure you have what you need. One of the best parts is the $1 margaritas that are absolutely delicious. I went for Halloween with a large group of friends and we left with 3 shots each on the house. Great place! Love the atmosphere: not too fancy, not too ratchet. It's like the epitome of a neighborhood gem.
Food was fantastic. Small area with bar up front, key draw is happy hour dollar margaritas. We didn't know this before we showed up. It was really loud but many of the folks there looked like regulars, which is always a good sign, so we stayed. Folks were friendly saying that yes, it usually is this loud in here :) I'm glad we stayed, the food was delicious. It's not fancy, plastic cups and paper table clothes. Go here for great food, not ambiance.
Ate early for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by great meal. Thought it was suppose to be Egyptian restaurant and curious, well it ended up being more Greek. Regardless, staff was kind and attentive to our needs and food was great! Salmon wrap was huge and very flavorful. Shrimp appetizer was not what I was expecting but once again very good. Great for quick lunch and near metro.
The staff here were all very, very nice. and tried very, very hard. The drinks are great but the bar scene can be a bit distracting if you are dining in the restaurant. Our appetizers were fantastic, the hummous was some of the best I've ever had anywhere (including the Mideast). But the salmon main course was mediocre and to me, looked like a prefrozen portion you get at Costco, dry & tasteless.
Would go back for the appetizers and drinks alone - it's clear the staff really cares about what they are doing.
The place was packed on a snow day. There was a special valentines day menu which the server forgot. He also forgot the types of Margaritas the place offered, he was probably new. The food taste was just blah for the 3 dishes we ordered, including the appetizer. The could feed the chicken quality was poor and there was no special taste.
I would recommend this place for hangouts where someone wants cheap drinks and a super noisy environment only.
Great place with nice service. Outstanding martini especially if you purchase them with gin and not vodka. The owner of the restaurant will personally make sure the martinis are made the way you purchase them. and the cost is $5.00 per martini.
The food is really fresh, especially their french fries, OMGthey are awesome. Ask the waiters to substitute the ketchup with their Basel dip so you will really enjoy your fries.
Also their baklava is one of the kind, just try it yourself and you will see what I mean.
Labeled as Egyptian, this reminds me more of Mediterranean. First thing that caught our eye were the weekend drink specials! $1 margarita, $5 specialty drinks. Can't beat that. But the food was why we came and we left extremely satisfied. Two of us went and shared 5-7 appetizers. I look forward to coming back with friends!
They label themselves Egyptian but the scope of the menu is much broader than that. In a good way. The oven-braised lamb shank special was fall off the bone tender but could have used more tomato sauce and less rice. The za'atar toast appetizer was excellent. The service was attentive and responsive. We were there early and it was quiet but there is potential for a very noisy atmosphere.
Very happy that we choose this restaurant, the service was outstanding. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. Really enjoyed the marmar and Egyptian bean salad. My husband enjoyed his seafood linguini. They treated us with free dessert since it was my birthday. We will be back
We were suppose to be just 2 people but ended up with 8 people and the hostess was very accomending. Our server was Astrid and I must admit she was amazing. She gave us free shots since it was my friends birthday and on top of that free dessert. The drinks were very tastey. I love the vanilla sky martini. We will be back.
I ordered a steak and shrimp--specified medium rare, it arrived smothered in a shrimp sauce and well done. They took it right back, less sauce and medium, but TOUGH. The watermelon-tomatoe gazpacho was pretty good, though nothing special. The restaurant was empty, so it was quiet for a nice chat, most people were outdoors. This might be ok for snacks and a drink, but if there are a few better places on that little stretch of Conn Ave near the Marriott.
When we arrived and told the hostess that we had a reservation, she looked at us like she had never heard the word before. No smile, no "Welcome to Medaterra!". It was quite warm & humid outside, so we asked for indoor seating -- it was even hotter in there, as they apparently don't use A/C. So, we had her show us to an outdoor table, where we were given water and menus and then ignored while the few other diners around us were served. We perused the limited menu, and found that it didn't offer the Mediterranean cuisine we had anticipated -- not even a basic Greek salad! After waiting for over 10 minutes in the oppressive heat for someone to at least acknowledge our presence and take our drink order, we got up and left.
