Not what we expected, very unorganized, with a very long wait. The place was empty. The waitress tried to charge our party of 7 for two party fees one for $28 and one for $32, and there was no fee to be added. The manager corrected it and stated it was for a party of 8.The restaurant didn’t have anything listed about it. I can imagine how many people have been ripped off by a party fee. He then said to us for your troubles , I will send complimentary desserts. We were not pressed for any but he had a waiter bring out a plate with 3 small sized desserts for 7 people. I can tell you we didn’t get the food, service or the atmosphere we hoped for but we sure did get a great laugh.
Wonderful! Low key fine dining, wonderful ambiance and the staff is very professional. Owner is great!
My family and I have been dining at McKinnons for years! Atlanta is one of the best cities in America! So many choices that sometime we forget the “classics”. I’ve been in Atlanta 36 years, McKinnons is by far my favorite “old school” restaurants... the food stands the test of time... grouper is perfection... crab claws! Best gumbo outside NOLA... service is over the top great...
Excellent menu with plenty of options to choose from. The owner was quite friendly and charming. Definitely going to make this a regular
There are rooms for whatever atmosphere you prefer. The piano bar is unique and has the experience required for a range of talents. I would make it a point to come back and try more dishes. The Crab Soup is absolutely superb. The owner is engaged to ensure your every requirement.
Been a favorite for years, host makes you fell like part of the family
Warm service. Great food
Everything is excellent!! Food, service, ambience....highly commendable...will definitely come back.👍😄
Food was amazing. Southern French seafood. Very fresh. Best food that I had in Atlanta. Owner Aziz is very attentive.
Food was marginal; very little flavor for a Cajun restaurant. Fried Green tomatoes were under cooked. Seafood was bland and over cooked
Loved Mckinnons. Great Cajun fair. Wonderful service. Dated ambience but it’s all good when the food and service is great.
Fabulous food and good entertainment in the bar. Everyone is so friendly.
A little bit dated restaurant , but the food was authentic Cajun. Service was good and they have a full bar.
Enjoyed the music and friendship of our guest. As always, the food was wonderful.
Excellent, excellent, excellent... The server and owner were great and it seemed like we picked the perfect day for perfect service. I would definitely recommend and I have already recommended this establishment already.
Excellent service and atmosphere. We had a lovely evening with friends. They have live music and the owner makes sure your service is excellent. This is now the oldest restaurant in Atlanta since 1972! A great place for a lovely evening.
First off, this place is ALL ABOUT AZIZ, the owner! He is the most engaging & personable host you’ll ever meet! It was a slow, early Thursday evening. We had the place to ourselves. Aziz welcomed us, chatted us up & served us. I had the oysters Rockefeller. They were prepared un-traditionally in a very spicy breaded manner & I did not care for them, but my husband devoured them. My husband ordered a Caesar salad & we wound up swapping. I ordered the Snapper Oscar. Very tasty, just wish there had been a bit more “Oscar”. My husband ordered the bouillabaisse which was delicious. This is an old school style restaurant for a mature crowd. We will definitely go again to try other things on the menu because the experience was just so pleasant & it’s close by.
We could not have picked a better place to dine. Grouper was excellent. Crawfish appetizer was the best. Will be going back.
Dark and quiet, very romantic. Owner Aziz made us feel very welcome. Food was delicious, sensible portions. They did not have the wine we ordered, but offered us a better bottle at the same price. Will definitely return.
Food was cold. Tasted like it was leftovers that were reheated
Food was terrible. Seafood was way over cooked and rubbery. Seafood pasta/scallops were not edible. Jambalaya was decent and was the only dish that was eaten in its entirety. Ordered okra and hush puppies with the meal and they didn’t come out until everything was taken away from the table. Really surprising given the 4 star rating. Won’t be going back.
Loved the ambiance for a date night. But the food was mediocre. The Java Shrimp appetizer was too spicy as to not enjoy the flavor. The ginger crusted snapper was bland and was only served with 2 roasted potatoes pieces and a few carrots, not really side items but more garnish. My husband had the amberjack and salmon combo. He said the amberjack was delicious but the salmon not so much and the portion sizes were really small. The saving grace was the order of red beans and rice side item which was delicious and the homemade hushpuppies which were a good texture, crispy and satisfying. Probably won't be back. I hate that as I really like to support small local businesses. The owner did come out to greet us which is a nice touch, but doesn't compensate for the food not being superb for the prices we paid.
Host is amazing. Food very good. We can't understand why we don't eat here every week. Will be back soon
Excellent good and thoughtful service, great old school restaurant. A gem of a place!
The food was not good. I had Bouillabaisse and the oysters and shrimp were tough. The bread arrived as I was finishing the meal. My friend’s Signature dish was not at all what she remembered and lackluster in flavor. Cheesecake was good.
Service was poor. Had to keep waiting for service. Too bad, as I like to have quiet place to dine.
The ambiance and the service were wonderful, however the food was lacking. I had oysters Rockefeller and I am not even sure that there were oysters in the dish. If so, they were very small, mostly it was soggy spinach. I also had the Bayou salad, which was very mediocre. The crayfish were mostly breading and the salad had more stems than actual leaves. I was quite disappointed in the food. It was not as I had remembered it from years past.
Fun times singing with Fran and meeting new friends
Always a great evening! We will return soon for sure.
Great place with great food! I brought a coworker there who is from Louisiana and he just kept raving about it!
A restaurant with great food and excellent staff. A restaurant doesn't stay around in Atlanta for this long if it isn't doing something right and McKinnon's long run is a testament to the kind of place they are.
Appreciate the great food and attentive service. Imaginative menu that is also not too fancy.
McKinnon’s is always a great experience. The food is delicious, the staff is very friendly and helpful and we always enjoy eating there. It is wonderful not to have to shout to have a conversation. And, the prices are reasonable.
This was an anniversary dinner for my wife and I. Kimball House in Decatur is where we normally celebrate special occasions. However, in an attempt to deviate from that and try one of the hundreds of other restaurant choices in the Atlanta metro area, I chose McKinnons. We were seated at a 4-top next to the kitchen despite me reiterating, this was our anniversary. I saw at least two other tables that would have been more suitable for this occasion. The decor is DATED! This place is in dire need of a makeover! I could’ve overlooked this if, the food would’ve lived up to the super-old school vibe they refuse to relinquish. The service was good although, there was only one other party in the entire place at the time we had dinner (5:30). We ordered mussels for an appetizer. When they arrived at our table, they had such a bad odor coming from them, we sent them back. My entrée was blackened amberjack with a crab cake on the side, broccoli and roasted potatoes. The veggies appeared reworked from a previous service, the crab cake was full of filler and the fish was super bland (cooked exceptionally well though). Amberjack is a firm, dense piece of flesh that should have been accompanied with a sauce, any sauce would’ve done the trick. My wife ordered a grilled catfish with crawfish hollandaise sauce. Her fish was also flanked with the same pathetic sides as I had. Out of curiosity, I ordered a red beans and rice. This was decent but not memorable. The flavor was Smokey (which I’d expect) but the beans were separating from their skins, which could be an indication over being over cooked or reheated too many times. Either scenario is a no-no. The presentation of each course was elementary and sloppy. The baguette was warm and fresh. We utilized two of them to help fill the holes in our stomachs. If you’re in Buckhead and have a taste for Cajun cuisine, this isn’t the place.
I expected so much more from this restaurant considering it has a five star rating. To be honest the food that we ordered was pretty bland. Two people in our party actually sent their side dishes back. The ambiance was very nice and really reminded us of New Orleans. There were six people in our party and no one had anything positive to say about the food. Very disappointing.
My new favorite!!!! Awesome ambience, awesome hosts, and awesome food. Will definitely return often!
I love McKinnon's and have loved it for decades. The food is very good and the service is impeccable.
Great food and service! Love having Aziz hosting!
We started our dinner with crab claws that were delicious. Our entree was prepared just perfect. It was a wonderful experience
Menu is exceptional. Food follows it pretty closely. Appetizers are the stars with incredible flavorings. Entrees are good, not not the stars like the appetizers. But the star is Aziz the owner. He’s an amazing host who makes you feel like you arrived home for dinner after a long absence. Everyone will find something that may not be up to their standards. But no one will find anything but superlatives to describe Aziz. We will definitely be back every time we come to Atlanta.
