McKelvies Ratings and Reviews
Service was excellent and the food absolutely fantastic. A great location for those living/staying in the area of the Halifax waterfront. We had oyster that were clean and fresh. Our shrimp appetizer was fresh and tasty. We both had lobsters salads which were inventive and so good!
After reading reviews it was easy to decide to go to Mckelvies while in Halifax. We waited until the morning of to make a reservation and our only option was 430 or 5pm.
I was excited to have my first full lobster in Nova Scotia and unfortunately it was very overcooked. I couldn't even eat the tails they were so rubbery.
My boyfriend's meal of surf and turf with a 1/2 lobster on the other hand was great.
I would have informed the server of my issue but she came by only immediately after our food was delivered by another waiter before we could take a bite. After that she didn't come by our table even to get us another drink.
At that point what's done was done so I left very disappointed.
Wonderful food and service as usual. Only thing I have to say is that when I reserved I had requested a window seat. Did not get that. I did not make an issue of it at the time as I had two friends with me that had never been to Nova Scotia. They just loved the food! Thanks.
We ate dinner at McKelvies and honestly it was not good. I had baked haddock which arrived lukewarm and swimming in butter. The waitress suggested I order the mash potatoes instead of the roasted ones but the entire meal was bland and unappetizing. Who wants to eat room temperature fish and potatoes? My husband ordered the seafood platter which was very expensive and also lukewarm and flavorless.
Maybe it was an off day, but I would definately not recommend this restaurant. Lots of hype but short on delivering the goods.
Stopped in for lunch and the place was pretty empty. We were promply seated and my girlfriend went to the washroom I got waters from our waitress. We then ordered a couple cocktails, she got a beer and I got a sinful Cesar which is basically a Cesar with an oyster on top. It was $12 and I was slightly disappointed but the fact that they gave me basically the leafy top of celery and not a whole stock. The waitress dropped off some bread and we placed our orders. My girlfriend was eating bread and ended up finding a piece of stone or shellfish in the bread. We didn't bother saying anything about it. Our waitress really didn't have it together I think it was a bad day for her. We both ordered the seafood chowder to start and only one came out had to ask for the second one and when the second one came in didn't have the biscuit that came with the first one. Seafood chowder was delicious ! It had shrimp scallops haddock or cod and salmon. There was some confusion with my order I had ordered a side of fries and they didn't come out when the rest of the food came out. I had a lobster roll and my girlfriend at the crabcakes both of these dishes were excellent my lobster roll had plenty of Lobster and just the right amount of mayonnaise and seasoning. I finished my roll fairly quickly and ended up canceling the fries. My girlfriends crabcakes were also good and good flavor. Overall I would say they need to have a better system in place because there are only three tables sat in the entire restaurant. It's a fairly expensive restaurant so I would expect the service to be a little better. I would return and give them a second try because the food was good.
It was very busy when we arrived. We had to remind our server a few times on forgot items that were ordered. Especially the oysters. He was however very engaging and personable so he was sincere when things were overlooked. Would always come back and recommend the food to everyone.
Food and drinks were very good. Wife had lobster and I had to seafood platter. Wife loved the
lobster but my seafood platter was not exceptional. I've had better in FL and RI. Servers were friendly
We found the it takes awhile to get your drinks and meals in NovaScotia.
Finding a parking space was difficult.
McKelvies is located in a historic building in downtown Halifax. I believe it was an old fire station. This restaurant is centrally located and has indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and wait staff and succulent seafood. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
I got the best experience of my life
As a Tourist being for the first time in this Amazing restaurant, and having the best "Langosta" (Lobster)
And I tell you, the customer service and the lady that took care of me was very special with me.
Love that place, I will come back again.
Thank you 😊
We were there to celebrate our son's graduation, and looked forward to local seafood. The oysters were so fresh we ordered an additional half-dozen after the first one, and the lobster was succulent.
Our waiter was attentive and jovial.
I would recommend this restaurant to anybody who is looking for great seafood in Halifax.
A welcoming ambiance on arrival, excellent and attentive service, good choices in a la carte menu, very good fish chowder - rated at 9 out of 10 by two chowder aficionados. Ordered steak and frites - the steak was tough.
Very nice desserts and coffee - we will be back.
The four of us enjoyed three of the early dining options. All were well prepared and presented. The crab cakes were exceptional! We really liked the spring rolls, too. One of us had been craving Digby scallops. She said they were superb and days later claimed they were the highlight of our touring days. The ambience was beautiful and the service was impeccable.
