McEwens - Oxford Ratings and Reviews
Food always appears and tastes fresh. Dishes are creative and blend seasonal fare with traditional meal anchors including fish, steak, and chicken to make for a consistently satisfying dining experience. This restaurant compares favorably to the most highly rated in New York, DC, New Orleans and other notable centers of dining choice and excellence.
We dine here a lot. I flew in from California to take my two children to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Everything was fabulous but the server. We have had her before but this evening she was sour, unfriendly and distant. She should not have come into work with such a poor attitude- it affected our dining experience.
The atmosphere is hip but cosy, the biscuits are devine, the cocktails are innovative, the chicken satay appetizer was delicious and the fried oysters were thoroughly enjoyed by my dining companions. Entrees were great too. Salmon, steak and a winter harvest salad with the no cake crabcake. All great. The banana cream pie we shared was just ok - kind of gummy- but the oatmeal crust was good. I'd go back!
We have loved McEwen's for years and went there Saturday night with friends. Our waiter, Branden, was rude and completely disinterested in our having a pleasurable dining experience. He rapidly scanned over the only special which I thought was an appetizer. When asked about entrée specials, he said "I already told you". We thought about dessert, but he simply asked if we wanted one, not taking time to describe choices. We have had him as a server in the past and did not have the same experience. He may have been having a bad night, but it was unfortunate that spread to our group. I may well not return there even though the food was good.
McEwan’s is at the top of our list for great food and for always providing a pleasant dining experience. We just had dinner tonight with friends and the food was excellent for our party of 5. The entrees were the beef filet, salmon, and sea bass. Every entree was well prepared, beautifully presented and delicious. On a brutally cold night, our table in the bar was so cozy and wonderful! As a side note, Sunday brunch is always divine! Thanks McEwens!
Where do I begin? We went here for a combined New Year's Eve/anniversary celebration. It was definitely memorable, but not in a good way.
First, the kitchen was way overwhelmed so the food was very, very, VERY delayed. Our first and second courses arrived 30 minutes apart. Our third course didn't come for another hour and twenty minutes. Our stomaches were growling by the time is actually arrived. On top of that, none of the food was very good. The brussels sprouts were undercooked. The steak was overcooked. And all the ingredients tasted cheap, like they were ordered from Sysco or some other large generic foodservice distribution network.
The waitress took our drink order but never actually bothered bringing our drinks. We literally never got them. We spent the entire dinner drinking ice water.
To add insult to injury, dessert came around and I ordered the tiramisu cheesecake. Apparently they ran out of the cheesecake part because all I got was a graham cracker crust with whipped cream and some Hershey's chocolate drizzled on top. It was disgusting.
All in all, it was a pretty horrible experience.
My daughter and I hard brunch and it was great! Service was perfect. We shared beignets, a delicious skillet and chicken and waffles. Wall was well prepared and served hot. We will definitely be back when we return to Oxford to visit my daughter who studies at Ole Miss. Takes reservations which is a plus!!
Service terrible not because of our server but because manager on duty was not in control of restaurant. No one ever came to our table until we stopped another server and asked to see our server. Dirty table across from ours never cleaned all night,. Brought wrong food to our table. Asked to see manager and he could care less a customer was unhappy. Sad part was food was great but dining experience horrific and management didn't care.
Have eaten there on other visits, but recent visit was quite disappointing. Food was not hot and took an extended time to come out of kitchen. Waiter told us twice that “food should be right out.” Service seemed out of sync with kitchen. I would likely still refer someone to try the place because of past experiences, but this trip was not a good one.
We had a reservation for the last seating at 9:30 (none available earlier). The hostess called around 30 minutes before to notify me that we could be seated earlier, which was much appreciated (although we couldn't make it until the appointed time). The food, ambiance, and service were mostly exceptional. It's truly one of the more comfortable and well appointed places to dine in Oxford, which is saying something! I highly recommend the steak and toast appetizer and wild salmon. My only complaint is that the server brought our meals while we were still working on our appetizer, and then mid-meal came to ask us if we planned on ordering dessert, stating that if so she'd like to go ahead and take our order because the kitchen wanted to close up. The end result was a decision not to order dessert, and a feeling of needing to rush through the rest of the meal. As someone from a restaurant family, I just feel that if you take late reservations, your kitchen needs to expect to stay open until the last parties are signing their checks, period, and not rush anyone. Other than this hiccup though, everything was fantastic!
