McEwens - Oxford Ratings and Reviews
Service terrible not because of our server but because manager on duty was not in control of restaurant. No one ever came to our table until we stopped another server and asked to see our server. Dirty table across from ours never cleaned all night,. Brought wrong food to our table. Asked to see manager and he could care less a customer was unhappy. Sad part was food was great but dining experience horrific and management didn't care.
Have eaten there on other visits, but recent visit was quite disappointing. Food was not hot and took an extended time to come out of kitchen. Waiter told us twice that “food should be right out.” Service seemed out of sync with kitchen. I would likely still refer someone to try the place because of past experiences, but this trip was not a good one.
We had a reservation for the last seating at 9:30 (none available earlier). The hostess called around 30 minutes before to notify me that we could be seated earlier, which was much appreciated (although we couldn't make it until the appointed time). The food, ambiance, and service were mostly exceptional. It's truly one of the more comfortable and well appointed places to dine in Oxford, which is saying something! I highly recommend the steak and toast appetizer and wild salmon. My only complaint is that the server brought our meals while we were still working on our appetizer, and then mid-meal came to ask us if we planned on ordering dessert, stating that if so she'd like to go ahead and take our order because the kitchen wanted to close up. The end result was a decision not to order dessert, and a feeling of needing to rush through the rest of the meal. As someone from a restaurant family, I just feel that if you take late reservations, your kitchen needs to expect to stay open until the last parties are signing their checks, period, and not rush anyone. Other than this hiccup though, everything was fantastic!
I went to McEwen's back in July with my sister, and she had the No Cake Crab Cake and raved about it. I had a bite and it was great! So when I went on 10/20/2017 I already knew what I wanted to order. I went to the website ahead of time and looked it up on the menu, because I couldn't remember the name of the dish. When I got to the restaurant and placed my order, I didn't even look at the menu because I knew what I wanted: A Blind Jim Ivy cocktail and the No Cake Crab Cake. The dish arrived and it was completely different that what my sister had a few months before. The waiter explained that the summer menu was still up on the website, and that they were now serving from the fall menu. So even though the name of the dish was the same, it was a completely different dish. I said, "Well, I guess I'll eat it." The server came back to the table and said, "I've let my manager know and we are going to update the website."
In all fairness, the dish was very good...and had I not had my taste buds set for a specific dish, I probably would have enjoyed it even more. My husband and mother-in-law loved their food (catfish and salmon, respectively). And they ordered dessert as well (creme brulee and banana cream pie...both phenomenal).
Overall, we got the Charcuterie Plate for an appetizer (excellent!), and we all got cocktails (margarita, mojito, and Blind Jim Ivy) Then, of course, our entrees and desserts. I spent a good bit of money there, and the meal was good, but I felt a bit cheated since I didn't get what I wanted. I think they should have done something to make it right.
Again, to be fair...it is a beautiful place. The food is wonderful. The ambiance is very calm, and it isn't too noisy. The service was good, not great. I will go back. I just know to read the menu when I get there and not count on the website for accuracy.
While in Oxford for the Half Marathon we had dinner at McEwens. Our table was toward the back of the restaurant so we're able to have conversation without extra noise.
The food was delicious and our waiter was excellent. His recommendations were well thought out. We enjoyed our experience totally.
My group gets together about once a month for lunch and McEwen's is the place we love to go. The food is delicious and the service is great . Our favorite table is in the front window and we request it every time. It is quiet and private. This was my first time to use Open Table and it was so easy and I will definitely use it again!
I've eaten here before and would generally give it higher reviews than this visit. We visited for Sunday brunch, when it was busy but not slammed. Service was slow, my soup arrived with my entrée (with no apologies), and used dishes were not cleared to make room as entrees arrived. My wife's "medium rare" steak frites were well done. (Since they were sliced in the kitchen, it should have been obvious that they were not cooked correctly.) Not their best showing. I'll go back because I've experienced better there and assume this was an exception. Hopefully this is not a sign of how things are now.
Three friends met for lunch at McEwen's. We were celebrating a late birthday. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Our food was delicious and very filling. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were the last of the lunch crowd to leave. No one rushed us or disturbed our gathering. We were very pleased with our dining experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Our server was attentive and patient with our menu questions. He was warm and friendly, and sincerely wanted us to have a great experience. The food was excellent; we were a table of five so had a real menu assortment, and everything was delicious. A special shout out for the drunken chicken and the crab cakes. We look forward to our next meal there!
The menu is limited but creative and Southern-inspired. The food was pretty good and plated very nicely. No Cake Crab Cakes (dinner portion) was ok, could have used lots more spice and a more vibrant/spicy sauce, spicy tomato chutney on top was not spicy nor was it chutney, it was also cloyingly sweet. The Seared Pork Tenderloin, Drunk and Naked Chicken and the Redfish special were all very good. Service was lacking. The waiter didn't listen, nor did the woman serving the meals to the table - she gave everyone the wrong dishes and instead of correcting, she walked away. The waiter walked away while I was still ordering a glass of wine. I expect much more on the service end for the prices charged. I don't think I'd go back - too many other excellent restaurants in Oxford.
Arrived early for our reservation and discovered we were assigned the worst table in the house. (We know, as we have suffered through dinner at that table previously. )That's when the two young hostesses made the decision to be rude, indignant and borderline combative. They refused to seat us at open table and told us it would be 2+ hours to be seated in the open booth in front of us. So, the three of us, had dinner at table for two...in absence of rude employees, it would have been a nice evening.
If you go here, which I don't recommend, stay away from the seafood. The filet was ok but the tartare appetizer & no cake crab cake were awful. The wine list & service were good. Just skip this overpriced wanna be restaurant altogether.
