McEwen's on Monroe Ratings and Reviews
We've participated in Memphis's Downtown Dining Week for the third consecutive year, choosing this year to try McEwen's. This is supposed to be a week for locally-owned restaurants to put their best foot forward and impress people that haven't been to their place before. That has not been our experience, so far. Each place, McEwen's included, has chosen an abbreviated menu for the occasion (understandable) in an effort to make a bulk amount of the same food and assembly-line people through the doors. It's really felt more like "feed the peasants week" and we're not likely to pick anyplace next year.
We chose to try each of the appetizers, each of the entrees, and we both selected the Peanut Butter Fudge as the dessert because the cake had a white chocolate (which isn't really a chocolate) sauce that we didn't want.
The Salad was a simple spring mix with a few pickled onion rings, a halved grape tomato, and a slice or two of cucumber. It was saturated with what tasted like just white vinegar rather than an actual dressing. The potato soup wasn't bad, but there wasn't anything special about it. It was a bit salty and I needed to add some black pepper. Nothing garnished the bowl, either. The salmon was about 4-5" long by about 1.25" wide. It had a really flavorful, crisp sear on it, but because it was so small, the whole filet was a bit overcooked. It was on a pretty hefty portion of mashed potatoes (nothing special), I suppose in order to fill us up, compensating for the skimpy salmon, and a handful of green beans. The pulled pork was just that, not barbecued, braised, or even slow cooked. It was a bit tough, bland, and about 1/2 the amount most places will put on a regular sandwich. It was on a bed of cheese grits, not quite the portion of the potatoes on the other dish. They were better than the potatoes, but again, nothing to come back for. The fudge was too sweet for her to even eat, with chocolate chips across the top. It had a caramel drizzle on the plate.
We were readily accommodated and escorted to our table at the time of our reservations. The wait staff had the table set upon our arrival and provided friendly and very efficient service, always checking back to see if our water glasses needed refills, if we needed additional bread, another drink and if our food was alright. Although it was a very busy night our party of seven was well taken care of and the food was delicious!
On a business trip and made a point of revisiting this restaurant because my first experience there was so good. It’s my perfect place. Excellent and interesting plates that are so delicious. Unpretentious and warm, gracious service. The value in the small plates dining is terrific. I just love it. Butter bean duck confit, braised short rib pasta were me faves. Wow!
A group of 6 friends had dinner after a downtown field trip to see the Nina and Pinta. The food was tasty and creative . The entire group enjoyed the appetizers and entrees. Followed with a excellent cream brulee. Service was spot on, attentive, but not overbearing. Only downside was slow valet parking.
The bar has an excellent selection of Bourbons, drinks where very good, as for our meal in the other room we felt the $15 appetizer for 2 scallops was overpriced. The wine selection was a little high in price and the ambience was loud.
I had the steak which was excellent but the vibe was missing something. Will go back for drinks but not a meal.
Visiting Memphis, excellent service from Ashley . My daughter and I both had the salmon excellent with risotto. Caesar salad prior was plenty for 2 . My husband had the chicken and was very pleased . Wine list n cocktails were both well listed . Valet parking reasonable 8.00 . Doesn't look special outside but a gem inside.
Just happened upon this place while in Memphis for a couple of days. Within walking distance of our hotel (Madison), close to the riverfront, food was wonderfully prepared, and the staff was exceptional.
Stopped in Memphis post the Great Smoky Mountain Half Marathon, making our way back to OKC, with my wife and the in-laws. The food was wonderful and fit everyones dietary requirements (in-laws are vegetarians). The staff was accommodating, pleasant, and able to make great suggestions (I appreciate when the staff is as passionate about the food as the chef).
Great place, we will definitely go back if we ever visit Memphis again.
I ordered the trust me vegetarian... I did not care for the sesame on it. Personal preference.... Appetizer perfect, salad perfect... My husband's food perfect.... Sorry to say but the sesame just left a weird taste and I wasn't a fan... That is the only "ding". We will be back it was great! Will recommend to others!
Classic neighbourhood restaurant. Well known to locals. Great consistent food. Both the fish and meat dishes are excellent. Homey atmosphere. Knowledgable bartenders. Would recommend to locals and first time visitors to Memphis.
Local products well prepared, with creativity. Started with intensely flavored watermelon salad, followed with earthy wild mushrooms, a juicy not fatty chicken thigh atop fabulous corn pudding, and finished with a grilled peach paired with a Dickel rye (great recommendation from our waiter).
Going out to dinner was a last minute decision for us. We were able to get an early reservation. We chose to order fried green tomatoes appetizer. They were yummy. The special of the night was a halibut. It was fabulous as were the potatoes with which they were served. I can't think of a time when I was disappointed at McEwen's.
Every single dish was to die for!! The sweet potato crusted catfish was phenomenal. I would go back just for that! We enjoyed the ambiance as well. The service left a little to be desired. It was unclear who our actual waiter/ waitress was. Different people came at different times, and there was quite a long wait for the check. The food was so delicious though that I will happily overlook that!
