We were disappointed. This was reviewed and recommended by Jonathan Gold and we were not fans of what we ordered. The venpongal was like a porridge; we thought it was going to be more like a rice.

MAYURA is always great. Great food and a nice neighborhood atmosphere. The particular style of Indian Cuisine is quite good and impressively prepared. Only problem is sometimes the communication with the wait staff; that bring out the food in a disorderly manner. The food is great and we always go back!!!

excellent Indian restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was friendly. The food was seasoned well- none of the dishes we had were greasy. We did not have any dishes with meat, so can't speak to that. The Dosa was great- so was the Bhel Puri, Saag Paneer, and awesome cauliflower- they called it Gobi Manchurian.

All the food was very delicious. The only problem is both my friends and myself cannot eat spicy food. When I asked the server if the dishes that we selected were spicy he said no.
They were very good at replacing our dishes for something less spicy but even when the new dish came it still was spicy.
With all that said, I would go back for sure.
I was looking for an Indian restaurant near Culver City. I saw that this was one of Jonathan Golds recommendations. I was surprised by the plain décor and the casual dress of the staff, however I observed the food on some tables and I knew this was going to be good, and it was delicious!
Decided to check it out based on inclusion in Jonathan Gold's 101 list, and was disappointed that the food was only mediocre in my opinion. I know that Indian food encompasses many many regions and styles and tastes, but this was not to my taste. The vegetable korma was watery and coconut-y, which I didn't like. The vegetable biriyani was heavy and dull tasting. On the plus side the lamb vindaloo was quite tasty, as was the bhel puri. The utthapam with onion and chile was just okay. Service was adequate and there was no wait time even on a Friday night.
I really like Mayura. I have eaten their lunch buffet many times and keep coming back for more. I went there for the Diwali (Indian New Year) feast. I was expecting really great. The curry fish was delicious, as was a potato dish redolent with little surprise tastes, and the little milky sweet square for dessert. Their papadums never go out of favor. Otherwise, sadly, I was a bit disappointed.
I always try everything. There were some dishes I had not seen or tried before, they were less to my taste than the aforementioned. The biryani was a bit gummy. The buffet included a beverage and I was delighted with a very good German black lager.

Flavorful southern Indian food -- flavorful and various levels of spiciness. We didn't care for the mixed vegetable pakora - tiny scraps of vegetables deep fried in a crumbly and bland chickpea coating. But everything else tasted great and did not disappoint. We liked the goat palak (in spinach gravy with spices) and chicken tikka. Also, the mango lassi beverage tasted fresh. The restaurant is brightly lit and spotlessly clean and is comfortably furnished with booths and with tables that can accommodate larger groups.

Awesome Food!this is a must visit for any foodie. The Buffett is lovely and comes with dosa, idly , and appam.. A good selection of curries - mutton, chicken and fish. Highly recommended.
Mayura may be my new favorite Indian restaurant in LA. It is owned by a family from Kerala, south India, where the food is spicier and healthier. Not the typical creamy, buttery food you find in most Indian restaurants (although you can still find that on the menu such as Butter Chicken which was Delish!) that are owned by people of the North. I highly recommend it! The Mixed kabob plate, chicken tandoori rolls, spicy shrimp curry, yum yum! Oh and a $5 corkage fee!

The only South Indian restaurant in Southern California, Mayura is truly a must-go for anyone who loves Indian food or just good food. The buffet has an incredible variety, which includes staples and foods that someone unfamiliar with South Indian food will love trying. Very vegetarian friendly, but my date was an omnivore, and he was happy, too. The proprietor is gracious: despite how busy it was because of Onam, she greeted us and came and checked in on us. The photos dotting the walls of her with politicians and celebrities alike who have visited Mayura speak for themselves: everyone leaves this place happy.

As I mentioned eating at Mayura is like eating at home. You are greeted like family and then seated at your table. The food is served fast and tastes like a home cooked meal. The spices are fresh and blend so perfectly.
I go for dinner at least once a week. The menu is perfect for omnivores, vegetarians and vegans. I can go with any of my friends and there is always something new to try. My favorites on the menu are the dosa and the vegetable korma.
Food is good. No idea why it takes so long to add Open Table points though. I have to email or call every time to get them added!
I went for the Vegetarian Thali which was divine--so many choices. My husband always orders Lamb Vindaloo when we go out for Indian food. He declared their version THE BEST! Many many things on the menu that you don't see in every restaurant. Friendly staff.
Mayura offers the tastiest selection of regional Indian fare that is both authentic and reasonably priced. They raise the bar on customer service with their polite and courteous staff.
I wasn't sure about this restaurant because it was in a strip mall. On arriving, it was very nicely decorated and did not feel like a strip mall restaurant. The service was very good. The prices where very moderate and the food was fabulous. I would definitely eat there again, and I would very highly recommend it to my friends. Good indian food restaurants are hard to find, I loved this one!!!

Mayura, just a block from the studios in Culver City, is the only place in the Los Angeles area to specialize in the complex cooking of Kerala, a largely vegetarian region on India's south coast, and if you are adventurous enough to try the buttery cashew rice called ven pongal instead of biryani, fermented-rice appam instead of roti, and the coconut-zapped avial instead of almost anything, you will be deliriously happy here. The dosas are pretty great too. Mayura has a separate kitchen preparing halal meat dishes in the north Indian mode, so if you're craving tandoori chicken or Pakistani-style nehari, you'll be fine.
This strip mall restaurant has really delicious Kerala style food - we had a spinach dosa and rasam, both of which are delicious; my guest had chicken tikka which was also lovely, (though not from Kerala). We skipped the buffet - though I would say it looked a bit skimpy by the time we got there after 1 pm, although the dishes offered looked interested.
Although it is in a nondescript strip mall, the inside of the restaurant is much nicer. It has an extensive menu and all of us enjoyed our meal. We'll definitely return.
I booked a group event here for about 30 people. The service was outstanding. We preordered the food for the table and shared everything family style. The portions were enormous, especially for the price ($15/per) with out 8 different dishes. But the food was just ok. I chose the place based on J.guould's review in LA times, and it did not meet expectations for best Indian food in LA.
Don't let the location or exterior lead you astray... this nice family owned restaurant serves good food in a very casual atmosphere.
We normally like this place for its homey atmosphere and friendly service. On this last visit (Sunday evening) the restaurant was overrun with Indian tour groups and there was a buffet for dinner and the entire atmosphere was quite disappointing, noisy and disorganized.
