We would say, this is under rated food and wine pairing in Sonoma, fair price, good food, really professional service, and of course their wine is great......chef John is doing a really good job, we live in Napa and tried a lot of food and wine pairing in our area, we’re looking for a Sonoma match that is less expensive.......this perhaps is good match!
The wine and food pairing was delightful. The chef was very attentive, and shared information about each food course, as well as the wine it was paired with. The venue is small and intimate, which makes for a delightful quiet food and wine experience.
This is the BEST tasting menu yet!
John, Chef, is a master at his craft, has deep knowledge about the wine and is very personable!
We love Mayo wines - especially the bubbles! It’s no surprise the Ricci Zin continues to win so many metals! I bought the Viognier and I generally don’t like Viognier...

We had truly wonderful time! I have been to this food and wine pairing tasting twice before, and although tasting menu changes quite frequently, I have always been impressed, happy and totally satisfied. Food was fantastic and so is the wine. Love this place!
Chef John at the Mayo winery tasting room is fabulous. There are 7 small bites paired with a variety of wine. The food, wind, and experience are outstanding. I highly recommend this experience!!

Great wines given a new dimension with the excellently crafted food pairings - highlights being an amazing Chicken Posole and Pork Belly. The 7 courses are all tiny and so make for a perfect light lunch. Management and service were very attentive and thoughtful. We were 5 people celebrating a birthday and this was a super way to spend a couple of hours in the wine country.

Chef John and the staff at Mayo never fail to deliver. The wines are impressive and the food pairings are mouth-watering. We like to visit every couple months to see the new seasonal menus and visit with the staff. The food and wine definitely enhance one-another, which is more fun than just wine tasting. I highly recommend that this be included in visits to the Kenwood area.
We had a late afternoon appointment on a Sunday. Maybe it was the combination of late afternoon and Sunday being their Friday, but the volume of wine tasters who had obviously been tasting wine all day who were bellied up to the bar and the very long wait for our first food items greatly detracted from what I had hoped to be a special wine and food pairing for our group.
We've were here several years ago and loved it. Just as good as I remembered it.
Our wine and food pairing was excellent. There were 7 courses paired with 7 different wines. The food was delicious and paired very well with the wines. Chef John was extremely cordial and knowledgeable. We would definitely return, as we we had a lovely experience.
Chef Locher was so welcoming and informative, and made us feel as though we were his only guests. The food and wine pairing was SPOT ON, perfectly presented and simply delicious. Even the owner, Jeffrey Mayo, checked in on us a couple of times. This pairing would work for a wine 'rookie' as well as a foodie, and was an excellent value, which could cost twice as much elsewhere. A perfect experience, which met and exceeded all of the excellent reviews I've read over the years. Don't miss it!
A group of us went here for the food and wine pairing on a vacation weekend in Sonoma. Really wonderful - great wine, delicious food, and the chef and the owner were both very knowledgeable, warm and funny. Great value for what you get too. Oh, and a pretty view outside of the rolling hills. If you're in town I highly recommend going here for lunch to start your day of wine tasting!
Great food and wine pairing. Chef John was outstanding, answered all questions pertaining to food and wine, extremely knowledgeable. Does not have the ambiance of Kendal Jackson but the room is more than adequate for tasting and pairing. The pace of the pairing was perfect, 7 wines paired with 7 food selections. I highly recommend Mayo Family Reserve Room.
Chef John is an effective multi-tasker. He prepares the 7 course meal and pour the wines. With an bubbly personality, John makes you feel like family and does a wonderful job. I suggest the Mayp family hire an assistant so he can focus on his art.
We highly recommend the tasting menu and pairing- all outstanding. A must-go destination on Sonoma Route 12 not too far from Santa Rosa.
They do a 7 course pairing for a fraction of the cost of most other wineries. The food was amazing and I left very satisfied. We did have a few youngsters show up and "Jeremy" was three sheets to the wind and needed to chat in between our courses but the chef made up for it. He apologized because they are open later than most wineries and was a very nice and accommodating. He still managed to make the meal and the explanations very informative and really enjoyable.
John, the new chef at Mayo food and wine pairing (Mayo reserve tasting room) is incredible. 7 delicious food pairings with great attention (and explanation) of how and why the food and wines pair together. This is super attention to detail and unlike ANY food and wine pairing you will find in Sonoma. We have tried them all. This is a special treat for friends out wine tasting to real foodies. Give yourself 1.5 hours. If you want to gab and talk and not listen to the explanation, go somewhere else. If you want to be super impressed with how wines and foods can accentuate each other, come to Mayo. This is a must do (and very reasonable, $50 if not a club member - compare this to the $90 tasting at Ram's Gate - this is better) anytime you are in the lovely town of Kenwood.
I have taken different friends to the Mayo Reserve Room food & wine pairing tasting twice in the past month with less than stellar reviews. I loved chef Sam. I think John is terrific as well. However . . . on the first occasion, one of the owners was on site working. My guests and I thought he could have been more congenial/hospitable. He seemed pretty tightly wound, had a script that didn't seem interactive with us. On the second visit, the wine and food we're excellent; the service not so much. I understand being busy mid-day on a weekend day. In anticipation of such, HIRE MORE HELP. The flow of courses should be smooth--without long waits (with no wine/food) between presentations. I'll come back. But third time's the charm as is said. I hope the links are worked out the next time I visit :)
My husband & I have been there before and enjoyed the food and wanted to get to know the new chief John, very happy with the menu he has for the fall , We will be back
Exploring the wine of Sonoma Valley is a fail if you don't stop at Mayo for a wine pairing from Chef John and his sous chef Oscar.
Very disappointing. We came here for lunch and once we finally received our first 3 courses (all 3 on tiny little plates), we realized that this was not going to sustain us (and we are fairly small people!). The courses were miniscule - essentially one bite a piece. Perhaps our expectations were off? What little food we had was very good, as were the wines, which were poured in decent quantities. We never actually got to taste the dessert course as they said they were waiting on a delivery. That seemed awfully strange! The Chef tried to be accommodating, but overall we didn't feel as though we received the attention we deserved. Maybe we caught them on a bad day. It really ruined the rest of our day though because the disappointing experience dragged on for 90 minutes and by the time we left we were so hungry we had to go elsewhere for lunch. After that, we didn't have time to visit any other wineries. There was nothing special about the ambience - really very plain and nondescript.
We are Wine Country professional drivers, checking in on exquisite tasting experiences to refer to our clients. This is the best food and winery pairing around. The chef personally presents and explains the pairings and is passionate about his work. As the menu changes with the seasons, it demands an encore. Soon!
I felt the new chef came across as sarcastic. The food was good. The wine was awesome. The small room was intimate. His attitude clouded the good times.

Sam Frumkin was a unique gem filled with unpretentious stories and amazing insights on the wine and food. He helped us to see the pairings in a different way and I will always cherish the memories he helped create...thanks Sam and good luck with whatever your next adventure brings!!!
Our appt was for 5:00 pm and thought this would be well worth the $50/pp with food and wine pairing as we read an article from 2016 in the wine mag that it was compared to French Laundry and high accolades from a newspaper article as well. We arrived at 5:00. The server greeted us by saying "oh you caught me on my break" and had been sitting at a table drinking wine with a man, who she said later, as she was leaving us with just the chef, that she was heading out for her dinner date with him. Felt like her date was much more important than her customers that just paid $100 for not much service, ambiance or communication. She said she would try to turn on music as it was very quiet and we only listened to their conversations. The music was never turned on. We asked for waters and eventually she remembered them. While she did explain the wines on the 1st flight and said the chef would explain the food the chef seemed very nervous explaining. The entire experience was strange. Not at all what we expected!! We are members of 5 wine clubs and thought we would try this and very disappointed. So sorry. Maybe it was an off day with server and chef but at this price you better be at your best always. We are also in a business that gets reviews and understand you better make it happen to receive the great reviews. It did not happen here for us. Sorry. Huge disappointment.
Chef Sam was very accommodating, shared a personal experience which we loved as the only visitors at 11:00. Mayo wines paired with great food + good wines + education and experience = Fabulous Experience. Definitely recommend for others.
This is an experience not to be missed near Sonoma, CA. Note: the reserve room is not colocated with the tasting room, so be sure to head to the right destination. Sam, the chef, makes amazing tastes to accompany the 7 wines that you will sample. He is a gifted chef and also just fun to listen to. Great way to spend and hour or so. It was a memorable experience and we will definitely come back again some day.
Sam accommodated a vegetarian in our group. He was very informative and made warm conversation.
Sam Frumpkin was an amazing host and incredibly knowledgeable! We had a lovely time sipping on delicious wine and hearing stories- very happy with selections of wine Food, however, was closer to 3 stars-- not mind blowing. That being said with the host, ambiance, selection of unique wines, it was a great experience and highly recommended.

We had a wonderful time at Mayo for the wine pairing tasting menu! We enjoyed all of the food and the wine, the chef was very personable and knowledgeable. We arrived about an hour and a half early and they had no problem taking us in and even gave us some champagne while we waited for our table to be set up. I would definitely recommend!

Had heard about this place from a client a long time ago and he recommended it. Took us a while to visit, though, because the place doesn't look that special from the outside. It's not real exciting on the inside either, but the chef, food, wine pairings and service were impeccable. I really think Mayo should look for a better venue or dress this one up a bit. An over haul of the inside decor would do an immense amount for this --- it deserves a better venue. DELICIOUS and so informative and fun!
I love this restaurante - it is by far my favorite one because the interesting explanations, the perfect combinations of wines and meals, and their welcoming attitude!
