Maynards Market + Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
What a wonderful place, one of our favorite. Great food, plus you see a train drive by now and then. Great service, David our waiter, who we had before was great, very polite and knew the menu and drink list like that back of his had. We will be back again and again. Great place to take someone new to Tucson. Thank you.
Wonderful remake of old city commercial facilities, with great imagination and style. Excellent menu choices both full meal and apps, with a robust drink and wine selection. Our server was obviously well-equipped to do a superior job, and did so with much professionalism. We appreciate that very much in this day when waitstaff are often young and fairly uncaring. We chose a mushroom toast app which was beautifully prepared and served and contained a spectrum of different types sauteed to a lovely texture. One of us then had the moules, which were large and perfectly cooked, in a very delicate broth. The second choice was the lamb shank, again perfectly done, a large portion with the meat "falling off" the bone, in a flavorful sauce, with ample spicing (altho' I might have added some more herb...my personal preference for stronger flavors...not a critique.) Overall, we had a great experience and it led us to question why, over a number of years, this was our first visit to Maynard's...it won't be our last, for sure.
The setting was 1900's Dining Car. The music was too loud for my taste but I'm sure a younger crowd would enjoy it. We shared a mushroom on toast appetizers that was wonderful. My husband had the Chipotle Rubbed Pork Chop and he enjoyed it very much. I had the Piedmontese sirloin which was supposed to come with seasonal vegetables. It was served with some type of charred greens that simply tasted burned. The steak was very good and the red wine caramelized onions were perfect. The béarnaise sauce was very blah and I didn't use it for either the steak or the fries. The fries were good, crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.
We will go back and give it another try. It is handy if you are going to downtown for the theater. And it has an outdoor patio that would be nice in warmer weather.
Terrific fine dining experience. We were given a table upstairs and the noise level was quiet and conversational. The menu is both classic and modern with beautifully presented dishes to validate the delicious quality of each selection. Our server was helpful, courteous, knowledgeable and perfectly attentive. In other words, a winner!
NY Strip was dry and tough, fat wasn’t rendered out. Not eatable. Management took care of is and removed it from the check.
Otherwise, it was a fantastic experience. All the other food was cooked to perfection. Our server was fabulous. I think the one steak just got caught up in the weeds on a holiday night. I will be back to try them again.
I brought a good friend from Phoenix as a pre-New Year's Eve celebration. It was perfect! Food and service (David was our server) were fantastic and the ambiance reminded her of a luxury dining car with it's dark wood ceiling and the painted tiles ceiling in the bar. Maynard's location in the historic train station and sound effects of trains rolling by outside contributed to the feeling of stepping back in time. We started with craft cocktails- Tequilas Dirty Sister( just the right amount of heat) and Perfect Martini with the flavorful wild mushroom and goat cheese puff pastry appetizer. We chose to share 2 mains: bouillabaisse and the duck breast. The Bouillabaisse was divine! perfectly done scallops, shrimp, mussels and just the right amount of white fish, perfectly cooked, in a saffron, almost lemongrassy flavored broth with sliced veggies. The duck breast was cooked just right (medium rare) served over an interesting lentil, lima bean mixture. We topped the meal off with coffee and a shared Creme brulee beautifully plated with dots of blueberries in vanilla cream and raspberries in chocolate sauce. An evening to remember for sure!
Composition of food was creative and interesting but execution was a bit off. Both my husband and my steaks were way over done. The Brussels sprouts were not fully done and lacked flavor. My dish was missing one of the sides listed. But the other components of the dish were great. Service was fantastic. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the food. Wine list was good.
We were seated upstairs, seemingly a step down from the "dark and handsome" main room touted in the advertising, but pleasant enough. The food was slightly disappointing. Our fois gras appetizers were well-prepared but skimpy -- my wife described her serving as "the size of a quarter." We both had trout for the main, and mine was somewhat dry and bland despite the unusual stuffing of onions. Good choice of wines with not-bad prices. No complaints about the service. Would try it again.
Maynard’s exceeded our expectations. It was our first time there and we will definitely add this to our list of favorite Tucson restaurants. Service was excellent. Amelia, our server was attentive without lingering too long. She was cheerful and made excellent beverage and entree recommendations. Food was excellent...well flavored, dimensional and great visual presentation. Restaurant ambience was soft and inviting.
The ambiance and wait staff at the restaurant were very nice. But, we had to wait quite a long time for the food and requests for coffee and such. The eggs Benedict were not good at all. The eggs were over cooked on both my dish and my friend’s dish and there was a very very small amount of hollandaise sauce. The salad had some tasteless dressing on it. The omelets our other friends had were not very good either. All in all, the food was not good and the service was not good even though everyone was pleasant. Sorry, won’t be going back.
The server was extremely rude and off putting. We were told we couldn’t be seated for happy hour at the bar even though there was two seats because it was reserved for a friend of the bartender even though they don’t reserve bar seats ever. Terrible experience for a place I have grown to expect amazing customer service from.
We were a party of 6 and everyone loved dinner at Maynards! We tend to dine out a lot and it is hard to find places of this caliber. It is clearly one of the very best restaurants in Tucson. Service here is friendly and very capable and the atmosphere is great too!
It is very worth the drive downtown from the Foothills!
Excellent traditional menu with a FLAIR, Maynards is a top drawer Tucson downtown destination. Indoor/outdoor dining right next to the Amtrack station makes for a fun and entertaining ambiance. Service was terrific and with a smile. The bar scene at cocktail hour makes for a noisy cacophony---a bit off putting. By 7pm the relaxed calm returns and the ambiance is perfect for a chicago like bistro. Parking is an issue on busy nights. The lima bean mushroom side order ranks up there with the best we've ever had.
Truly disappointing. Yes, the decor and the atmosphere are very nice, but this restaurant has an inexplicable good reputation.
The service was adequate, but two out of the four dishes served at our table were truly bad, both in their concept and execution, the stuffed trout and the bouiliabase
At this price completely unacceptable. Visiting from out of town, been to Tucson many times over the years, had the old impression of Tucson being a dad food town, but found out this trip there are some newer , excellent alternatives for mid priced and higher end dining. There's absolutely no excuse for what we experienced at Maynards,
We have always loved Maynard’s and perhaps it was just an off night. Filet arrived cold and purple in the center when asked for medium, side dish potatoes were raw, lamb shank which is typically prepared hours ahead of time was lukewarm. Good bread and burgers though.
I love Maynard’s, do not get me wrong. We were a party of 5 . 2 had great meals and 3 did not. Two ordered the same steak meal, ordered exactly the same way, medium rare. Both steaks were med well and tough. The Steak frites on my order had clearly been frozen and came from the same package and were fried together in one big lump. The Lima beans and mushrooms Side was dried out and tasteless. The other meal was a mushroom puff pastry which was the size of a small saucer and not worth the $16 price tag. The other two meals were very good ; duck and pork chops. The atmosphere, service and ambience were, as always, excellent.
