What Insiders Are Saying
Mayahuel is another one of those sexy Specialty Cocktail dens that have helped to reshape Date Night here in NYC. Trying to get your date liquored up so you can do dirty things to him/her? Mayaheul isn’t a bad place to start.
Food sucked. Street carts have better tacos Than this
Ambience would be great for a date night, if the service was not abysmal.
I ordered 3 tequilas on your menu and you didnt have them. As a teuila conniosseur. I was disappointed a Museum of Tequila would be out of teuila.
And with three couples, splittibg the check should be an option.
Since the last time we were there they severely cut down the dinner menu. Stayed for a couple of rounds of drinks and went elsewhere for dinner. Used to be our favorite taco spot.
Drinks are good ,food and servie okay one thin that I was very disappointed that they have the virjen of Guadalupe on the bathroom wall.
They seated us 50 minutes after our reserved time. It wasn’t an issue with OpenTable - we could see the reservation on their system. They simply weren’t prepared. There was no apology for our delayed seating. The food ranged from terrible (a paella that seemed to have come out of a Trader Joe’s box) to mediocre (decent meat was made mediocre by Walmart tortillas). The drinks were pretty good. They have a wide selection of mezcal. The service was otherwise okay. The bathroom featured the toilet cleaning brush in a plastic box in the middle of the floor. And hopefully no one was waiting because the door didn’t lock. Would not return.
Superb! Loved the food, service and ambiance!
Our server didn’t greet us for the first 20 minutes we were there, although she was delivering drinks and food to the tables on both sides of ours. Drinks were great, guacamole was too. The queso was over cooked causing the cheese to curdle. The tacos arrived cold, and the chicken and beef tacos were mostly gristle.
Absolutely awful! Nothing like what it used to be under the new owners. I’m so sad because that was the best and was once my favorite restaurant. The queso fundido literally had the texture of Elmer’s crazy glue that just kept getting chewier and chewier as you ate.
Mayahuel is under new ownership—do not be fooled! This is not the place it used to be. The drinks are watered down and the menu is now a very misguided mix of Mexican appetizers and middle eastern/Mediterranean entrees. Service is hilariously inept.
We were excited to hear this place was reopening but we were supremely disappointed. They need to officially change the name as everything about this place has not changed, less the interior which they left thankfully. That is about the only positive thing I can say about this place. Nothing like the old spot unfortunately.
I am going to miss this spot, what a wonderful restaurant. The drinks were inventive and delish, the food shared that luster. So sad to see them close.
Can't believe this legendary mezcal and tequila bar is closing, due to a dispute with a terrible landlord (who is threatening to open his own in the same space - don't go!).
WHAT A GEM. The tequila menu is extensive and delicious. Great for drinks and smaller shareable bites with friends. Sad it's closing in a week! Hoping they find somewhere to relocate soon.
I made another reservation for a week later. Should tell you everything you need to know :)
Intriguing atmosphere, great drinks, and a warm welcome from the owner himself. Really enjoyed the date.
Mayahuel is known both for introducing New York to artisanal agave spirits and for crafting amazing and thoughtful cocktails using those spirits as a base. The team bolstered their liquid refreshment with excellent appetizers and small plates, which put Mayahuel a few steps above a straight-up tequila bar but below a full-on restaurant experience. For me: perfect.
Unfortunately, with interest in agave now over-saturating New York, Mayahuel lost some of its uniqueness, and is scheduled to close August 8, 2017. So GET THERE QUICK. You will not be disappointed. Kudos to the team at Mayahuel for such foresight and, operationally, a great experience!
I made reservations a week ago for my wife's birthday and invited our entire family. This was done through the Open Table app. I made reservations through Open Table because the few times I had called the restaurant directly there was no answer.
Open Table confirmed my reservations and I was under the assumption that everything was in order. Our entire party arrived at the restaurant as scheduled only to find that it was closed for "employee appreciation".
This was extremely upsetting. I do not understand how I was able to make a reservation for a very special celebration when the restaurant was scheduled to be closed.
My wife and I will never return to this restaurant.
Lots and lots of mezcal choices. Cute but casual bar. I'd go here if it was date night with your boyfriend, and you wanted to experience something unique. Staff was super friendly, cocktails were delicious as well.
Late night amazing dinner, the warm salsa is incredible, ate sooooo many chips. The owner was clearly super involved and caring.
Pricy but amazing tasty and creative cocktails. Food was very good and their fantastic homemade smoked salsa was impressive.
Staff were good, food was okay. I was expecting a bigger menu, maybe including some more creative foods incorporating fresh ingredients (similar to the drinks menu). There was an odd smell on the second floor, and not a good one. Drinks - the reason we chose the place - were tasty but not potent. Overall, somewhat of a disappointment.
Good drinks great service food was eh. Very extensive booze list which is always great.
Amazing food and cocktails!! We will be back for sure!
A gem! Some of the best Mezcal coctails you'll find in NY. The bartending team (Jordan, Will, and Nicole) are true artisans when it comes to creating libations to fit your mood and taste. HIGHLY recommend!
Fantastic as always. Great place to take out of town guests if you want something unique
Amazing cocktails and the service was great! I felt the vibe was slightly pretentious but it may have just been the fact the cocktails were $15 each (but well worth it!). Will definitely be going back.
Cramped but good food and service
Been going here for years and this spot never disappoints. Best selection of tequila cocktails in NYC.
Loved the drinks here and the atmosphere. Waiters were friendly and very helpful. Will definitely be going back!!
The cocktails were amazing and the service was wonderful. I would only recommend going here for drinks as the food menu was extremely small and just mediocre.
The chorizo tacos were amazing. The chicken tinga had a nice unique smokey taste. The drinks were also great. Tight squeeze but I guess thats NY for you. Dim lit nice for date nite.
Mayahuel serves the best cocktails--it is my favorite bar. We recently discovered the food is also excellent. The smoky salsa, tacos and churros with chocolate are not to be missed.
I am 6' and 210 pounds, my friend is similar in size - and we both found the seating upstairs to be very uncomfortable. So much so that we left after having one drink. My recommendation for people like us is sit only at the bar to enjoy a drink or two and an appetizer - otherwise go elsewhere. We asked to have one of the tables near the bar which looked better, but they said it was for seating at least 3 people - and that seems like a very tight fit. Anyway, we'd asked on a rainy Tuesday night, so it's not like those tables were taken - so we were disappointed the waiter didn't move us.
Mayahuel wasn't making food tonight due to a staffing issue and didn't call or email to warn us, so we dined elsewhere despite our reservation for six.
Delicious! Service was good and fast, and the drinks were great. I had one with mezcal that was incredible. Highly recommend!
Great cocktails, great server named Eddie. Awesome guacamole.
Took the waiter 40 minutes to take our reservation.
After 5 minutes he told us that they are having an inspection and he doesn't know how long it is going to take.
Also the 2nd floor need some renovation it looks a bit worn down.
My favorite place over the past week of dining out. Food was fresh and complex yet not too heavy. Extensive cocktail list really prived that tequila and mezcal earn a seat at the craft coctail table. The place was tiny but powerful decor-wise; looked like it could have been out of From Dusk till Dawn; gothicly mexican
Amazing dining experience! The food, cocktails, service, and ambiance are all top notch. Every trip to NYC will always include a stop at Mayahuel.
