Charlottesville has so many wonderful restaurants, but Maya did not live up to its ratings. The noise level in the back room was ear shattering due to a large party. The server was inattentive and disappeared for lengthy periods. The sides on one plate were cold. We had to go find a random server to ask that it be corrected. It did not get fixed until our original server reappeared. Besides all the above, the food was mediocre overall. A definite miss.
Greeted warmly when arrived and seated quickly. Waitress was attentive and all ways available.
It was an interesting menu. The meal was very tasty--We were very pleased and will return when in the area again.
Really disappointed in food since we were referred by someone who really likes to eat healthy. Waitress couldn't even tell us what was in a vegetarian dish, steak was marginal mushroom appetizer had one type of mushroom and then a whole bunch of other things...not mushrooms, and they were not able to decant our wine. Said they "couldn't find one" and then said theirs "were not in good enough shape to use." Hmmm.
My wife and I dined there for the first time and I was really disappointed. I ordered the mushroom plate for a starter. Rather bland. Only good thing was the pork belly (how can that be bad). I ordered their Sunday special, fried chicken. I figured, this was a place that specialized in southern cooking and who invented fried chicken but southerners, so it had to be good. Nope, what I got was a tasteless piece of greasy chicken that was not golden brown but, instead, rather grey. The waitress asked me how it was and I indicated I was not happy. They immediately offered a replacement (good service). I ordered the crab cakes. Also rather tasteless. My wife had oysters to start (ok) and trout with a side of brussel sprouts (really good). They comped me the price of my main dish (once again, good service). But they really need to get a decent chef. We won't return.
One of our favorite places for a casual dinner but this visit not quite up to par with regard to food and service.
Valentines Day- menu was pre-set. Appetizers dried out as if prepared well in advance. Food not as good as usual. Suspect that due to busy day, food not quite what it usually is, as I have eaten here several times previously.
Always a great evening out at Maya - terrific food and the best martinis ever!
Didnt like being seated in back room directly below a ramp.
The food is a modern take on Southern comfort food and is excellent. Service is attentive and accommodating--these folks aim to please. Very good wine list and cocktails. Outside seating is available when weather permits. One of Charlottesville's Top 10!
Good value for great food, but limited menu choices.
I give credit to Maya for providing a varied and interesting menu for restaurant week and putting forth an A plus effort. Our appetizers and entrees were excellent and did not suffer from being part of a busy week. The desserts were less successful. The carrot cake parfait was a better concept than a reality. The wine list was reasonably priced and the pours were generous. Our server was very attentive.
I agree with other reviews that the downstairs dining room (not the bar room) is bland and needs some love.
Maya - For Family & Friends
Was traveling from NJ to Charlottesville, and made a res for Maya based on internet search - needed good food for a party of 5 in a relaxed atmosphere. We happened to attend during restaurant week and found the selection to be varied and very broad. The presentation and service was great. Good drinks, relaxing atmosphere.
Next time I am in town this will be a go to restaurant!!
Food was great, service was spotty. The waiter was super nice but things came out randomly and a few apps were missing (which he took off the bill). What we got was delicious, however, so if you’re patient, you will enjoy the meal!
