This was an amazing find. The meal was so delicious and the service was very good. We had the local trout with shaved brussel sprouts and broccoli. So much flavour. Our son had the ribs, he thoroughly enjoyed them, they looked incredible. The bar is well stocked and a top notch bartender also.
Tuesdays are great!
We had a family dinner booked through OpenTable. The restaurant confirmed my reservation via text right after I made it on OpenTable. Then again they called less than an hour before our reservation to make sure we were still coming. The whole point of me using OpenTable is so that I can pick a date and time and not have to worry about calls and confirmations. Leave me alone and just accept my OpenTable reservation.
Service was somewhat slow, but it was a busy Saturday night.
Food was above average, but sauce on my ribs was a little too thick.
Cocktails and Desert were fantastic.
Be sure to try the Cheese Fritters.
Food was excellent as always. Hillary is great!
This restaurant was as amazing this visit as it has been all the past visits. Maya's food is delicious and service is incredible. Always be sure to check out the specials! They change seasonally and are always delicious!
Steak was perfectly rare. That’s hard to do! Prompt, friendly service; was not rushed.
Great food! I've been here multiple times. Love the cornbread and brussel sprouts!
Great food. Great service. My mom has a severe allergy to pepper and the chef and waiting team worked together to give her a deliciously tasting meal.
Charlottesville has so many wonderful restaurants, but Maya did not live up to its ratings. The noise level in the back room was ear shattering due to a large party. The server was inattentive and disappeared for lengthy periods. The sides on one plate were cold. We had to go find a random server to ask that it be corrected. It did not get fixed until our original server reappeared. Besides all the above, the food was mediocre overall. A definite miss.
Greeted warmly when arrived and seated quickly. Waitress was attentive and all ways available.
It was an interesting menu. The meal was very tasty--We were very pleased and will return when in the area again.
Really disappointed in food since we were referred by someone who really likes to eat healthy. Waitress couldn't even tell us what was in a vegetarian dish, steak was marginal mushroom appetizer had one type of mushroom and then a whole bunch of other things...not mushrooms, and they were not able to decant our wine. Said they "couldn't find one" and then said theirs "were not in good enough shape to use." Hmmm.
My wife and I dined there for the first time and I was really disappointed. I ordered the mushroom plate for a starter. Rather bland. Only good thing was the pork belly (how can that be bad). I ordered their Sunday special, fried chicken. I figured, this was a place that specialized in southern cooking and who invented fried chicken but southerners, so it had to be good. Nope, what I got was a tasteless piece of greasy chicken that was not golden brown but, instead, rather grey. The waitress asked me how it was and I indicated I was not happy. They immediately offered a replacement (good service). I ordered the crab cakes. Also rather tasteless. My wife had oysters to start (ok) and trout with a side of brussel sprouts (really good). They comped me the price of my main dish (once again, good service). But they really need to get a decent chef. We won't return.
One of our favorite places for a casual dinner but this visit not quite up to par with regard to food and service.
Valentines Day- menu was pre-set. Appetizers dried out as if prepared well in advance. Food not as good as usual. Suspect that due to busy day, food not quite what it usually is, as I have eaten here several times previously.
Always a great evening out at Maya - terrific food and the best martinis ever!
Didnt like being seated in back room directly below a ramp.
The food is a modern take on Southern comfort food and is excellent. Service is attentive and accommodating--these folks aim to please. Very good wine list and cocktails. Outside seating is available when weather permits. One of Charlottesville's Top 10!
Good value for great food, but limited menu choices.
I give credit to Maya for providing a varied and interesting menu for restaurant week and putting forth an A plus effort. Our appetizers and entrees were excellent and did not suffer from being part of a busy week. The desserts were less successful. The carrot cake parfait was a better concept than a reality. The wine list was reasonably priced and the pours were generous. Our server was very attentive.
I agree with other reviews that the downstairs dining room (not the bar room) is bland and needs some love.
Maya - For Family & Friends
Was traveling from NJ to Charlottesville, and made a res for Maya based on internet search - needed good food for a party of 5 in a relaxed atmosphere. We happened to attend during restaurant week and found the selection to be varied and very broad. The presentation and service was great. Good drinks, relaxing atmosphere.
Next time I am in town this will be a go to restaurant!!
Food was great, service was spotty. The waiter was super nice but things came out randomly and a few apps were missing (which he took off the bill). What we got was delicious, however, so if you’re patient, you will enjoy the meal!
We had a wonderful meal during Charlottesville Restaurant Week. Our server was outstanding, and each course was delicious. Thank you for a lovely evening!
Everything wa well done. We went to try for restaurant week and we will be back.
The grits here set the bar for the tastiest in C'ville. They are rich and cheesy and the perfect accompaniment for the tasty dishes at this comfy restaurant.
Cocktails were fabulous as well as the food! Great service and a cute atmosphere. I would highly recommend this restaurant!
Went for restaurant week. I loved the steak. My friend got the duck and was pleased but wished she had chosen the steak.
Good food, great service. Lovely place
Another great meal at Maya, we ordered the restaurant week menu and everything was delicious, beautifully prepared and served with a smile.
I was a little disappointed in Maya after reading all of the great reviews. The food was good, but not amazing. The ambiance was very bland and boring in the room we were seated. The front room looked a lot nicer, but the room we were in (back area) was very plain looking and not a nice ambiance. We were also seated next to a window and it was very chilly. We also had to wait a ling time for our entrees. I would not eat here again since there are so many other good restaurants in Charlottesville. On the positive the wait staff were very polite and attentive.
My evening started with a Sazerac, well balanced and perfect for sipping and relaxing. I ordered the local trout and had sides of Brussel Sprouts and sweet potato fries, and my date had the fried chicken with sides of broccoli and grits.
The trout was perfectly cooked and flavored, the Brussel sprouts flavored nicely with bacon and onions, and the sweet potatoes fries nicely crisp, but not over or undercooked.
The fried chicken was composed of boneless thighs, which made the eating clean and easy, and the dark meat added moisture and flavor to already delicious fried batter. The grits were a nice side - I’d order them another time as my side.
I recommend finding seats that don’t look out to the street. Vehicles turning into the main road are briefly distracting when the lights hit the eyes.
It was my first time to Maya, and I’ll definitely try it again.
Food was incredible. Wait staff was polite. We would go back for the food.
Excellent value on Tuesdays although service was slow - it took 40-45 minutes for 2 entrees on a busy night and the food was barely warm. Flavors are delicious, though. Next time we will visit on a non-Tuesday or arrive super early or late to avoid slow service because we love this group of people and it’s a locally owned spot. Their cocktails are phenomenal and more reasonably priced compared to other area restaurants. Sit upstairs or in the bar area b/c the ambience is lacking in the front left room (harsh lighting!)
Another greast dinner! Our only complaint about the food was that they were out of whipped potatoes and biscuits. The oysters were amazing, as usual. Our tables' entrees included steak, trout, and the lamb shank special. The dining room was busy and the service was outstanding! We will definitely go to Maya again soon.
My boyfriend and I reserved a table at Maya for New Years Eve. We were pleased that they were serving their regular menu and specials instead of the super expensive fixed price menu of several courses found at so many restaurants. We enjoyed the food. My fried chicken was excellent (though the broccoli was a bit overcooked). The service was outstanding - prompt and friendly.
very good food, very good service, but the kitchen (or someone) dropped our order form and we waited almost an hour for dinner tho many who came in after us were served
Enjoyed the food very much! The Tuesday special was great! I’ll remember Tuesdays!
Wonderful place to dine on Christmas Eve. They kept the menu the same and did not jack up the prices. We had a great meal in a relaxed atmosphere.
The food is delicious and well seasoned. Pork tenderloin was wonderful. Shrimp and grits were excellent. And bartender Ted makes fabulous drinks!
