Maya Ratings and Reviews
I give credit to Maya for providing a varied and interesting menu for restaurant week and putting forth an A plus effort. Our appetizers and entrees were excellent and did not suffer from being part of a busy week. The desserts were less successful. The carrot cake parfait was a better concept than a reality. The wine list was reasonably priced and the pours were generous. Our server was very attentive.
I agree with other reviews that the downstairs dining room (not the bar room) is bland and needs some love.
Maya - For Family & Friends
Was traveling from NJ to Charlottesville, and made a res for Maya based on internet search - needed good food for a party of 5 in a relaxed atmosphere. We happened to attend during restaurant week and found the selection to be varied and very broad. The presentation and service was great. Good drinks, relaxing atmosphere.
Next time I am in town this will be a go to restaurant!!
I was a little disappointed in Maya after reading all of the great reviews. The food was good, but not amazing. The ambiance was very bland and boring in the room we were seated. The front room looked a lot nicer, but the room we were in (back area) was very plain looking and not a nice ambiance. We were also seated next to a window and it was very chilly. We also had to wait a ling time for our entrees. I would not eat here again since there are so many other good restaurants in Charlottesville. On the positive the wait staff were very polite and attentive.
My evening started with a Sazerac, well balanced and perfect for sipping and relaxing. I ordered the local trout and had sides of Brussel Sprouts and sweet potato fries, and my date had the fried chicken with sides of broccoli and grits.
The trout was perfectly cooked and flavored, the Brussel sprouts flavored nicely with bacon and onions, and the sweet potatoes fries nicely crisp, but not over or undercooked.
The fried chicken was composed of boneless thighs, which made the eating clean and easy, and the dark meat added moisture and flavor to already delicious fried batter. The grits were a nice side - I’d order them another time as my side.
I recommend finding seats that don’t look out to the street. Vehicles turning into the main road are briefly distracting when the lights hit the eyes.
It was my first time to Maya, and I’ll definitely try it again.
Excellent value on Tuesdays although service was slow - it took 40-45 minutes for 2 entrees on a busy night and the food was barely warm. Flavors are delicious, though. Next time we will visit on a non-Tuesday or arrive super early or late to avoid slow service because we love this group of people and it’s a locally owned spot. Their cocktails are phenomenal and more reasonably priced compared to other area restaurants. Sit upstairs or in the bar area b/c the ambience is lacking in the front left room (harsh lighting!)
Another greast dinner! Our only complaint about the food was that they were out of whipped potatoes and biscuits. The oysters were amazing, as usual. Our tables' entrees included steak, trout, and the lamb shank special. The dining room was busy and the service was outstanding! We will definitely go to Maya again soon.
My boyfriend and I reserved a table at Maya for New Years Eve. We were pleased that they were serving their regular menu and specials instead of the super expensive fixed price menu of several courses found at so many restaurants. We enjoyed the food. My fried chicken was excellent (though the broccoli was a bit overcooked). The service was outstanding - prompt and friendly.
Maya is quite possibly my favorite restaurant in cville, though they have stiff competition. The food and service is always fantastic. This last time i got their meatloaf special, which sounds like a silly thing to get at a nice restaurant but it was fantastic. I always recommend Maya when asked.
Maya restaurant was an excellent choice for our anniversary dinner. The food was fabulous and the staff were courteous and respectful. We didn't feel rushed and the atmosphere was pleasant. The meal was on the pricier side, but well worth it for a fine dining experience.
Good very good though not great. Fried chicken special was very tasty as were the Brussels sprouts and cheesecake. Didn’t appreciate loud comments from a staff member about front of house/back of house differences which I’m sure the whole restaurant heard.
If you don’t like pepper, you might want to skip this place. Chef was a bit heavy handed, at least the night we were there.
I had the blackened tilapia with mac and cheese and collard greens. My sides were great, my tilapia tasted like something I could make at home. I've been to Maya before and ordered the crabcakes which were delicious. My friend ordered the steak and loved it--so perhaps it was just my choice of entrée. The biscuits with honey butter were AMAYZING. I wanted to baaaathe in the honey butter!
The wait staff was attentive and enthusiastic. Unfortunately, the food just did not live up to the billing. If fresh, local ingredients were used, it was hard to tell. My local farm-raised trout was mushy and flavorless as were the brussels sprouts. No else in my party raved about their food; they all said it was just OK . I really wanted to like the restaurant, but it was pretty forgettable.
