Maya has been a longtime favorite of mine. I know the food and drinks will always be excellent - they're creative but comforting, which is quite a feat. I love that I can choose which area I want to sit in based on the experience I want: outdoors for a large social event, indoors (especially upstairs) for an intimate evening. Like I said, it's a fave.
My colleagues and I went for upscale soul food and it was a rocky start with no sweet tea but from there the food and service more than made up for it.
Absolutely obsessed with $12 Tuesdays! Everything about my experience at Maya was outstanding!
Southern cooking with a gourmet twist. We loved it and will return.
A bit noisy but excellent food!!
Food was excellent! The pimento cheese fritters and the trout were our favorites. They had a very large party going on at the same time which took away from the experience a little. Would definitely return.
Great service, great speciality drinks but food wasn't. Fritter appetizer overcooked. Grits were bland. Chicken BBQ didn't have great taste. The biggest disappointment however are the seats at the booths by the bar. Desperately need to be replaced, as you sink into "holes" - and we tried 2 tables. We got a good laugh, but pretty uncomfortable by the end of the meal.
My husband and I were in town for one night and Maya was near our hotel (the Marriott Residence Inn downtown, which was one of the nicest Marriotts we've ever been in). What a find this restaurant was. The food was delicious, our server was lovely, and the ambiance was perfect, and the prices were very reasonable. Highly recommend.
Fabulous! Food was amazing!
Awesome dinner! Comfortable space, nice ambiance, plenty of time to order and apps/entrees/desserts all arrived at the perfect time. Meal was delicious with plenty of flavors and fixings. Kudos to everyone for making our first time a great time!
Excellent. Fish and veggies are delicious. Don't change a thing.
Not a fan. It's kind of hard to screw up crab cakes. But, they had a very odd citrus flavor that overwhelmed the crab taste. Waitress couldn't keep enough water on the table. And, with 6 or more people, they automatically add a tip. Won't be going back to this one.
Maya is one of our favorite restaurants in Charlottesville. Have been there many times over the past 10-12 years. The food was excellent as usual. The service was slower than usual, given that it was a holiday, but the server was very pleasant. I personally am sorry they switched the biscuits to ones with cheddar and onion, but my daughter loved the new ones.
We arrived early, expecting to have to wait, but the very accommodating staff seated us almost immediately at a nice window table in the second dining room. The meal that followed was well prepared and quickly served. Delicious. Altogether, a very pleasant dinner.
Great venue for an Easter dinner. The brunch special was delicious and very economical. Overall a very nice time.
Attended Easter Brunch pre-fixed menu. Generous portions on all courses & food was delicious!
Great atmosphere too! Will go back for sure.
Was in from out of town for Easter Brunch. Had an absolutely lovely time and truly enjoyed the food. Service was outstanding and would go back in a heartbeat!
Excellent Easter brunch at Maya. We especially enjoyed the atmosphere and loved seeing the servers enjoying the music as much as we were at our table - all while doing a great job.
Excellent food. Trout and fried oysters were very goof
Love the restaurant. I've been here three times and enjoyed all of the meals. The trout, catfish and ribs have all been great. I also like the sides of chopped Brussel sprouts and macaroni and cheese.
Good solid food but the atmosphere was a bit noisy and unsettled.
Good ribs, and good sides. We waited a few minutes at the bar and were seated at a booth in the bar area. Service was very good, and the food was very good. We were in town for the weekend but if I lived nearby I would visit again.
This was an amazing find. The meal was so delicious and the service was very good. We had the local trout with shaved brussel sprouts and broccoli. So much flavour. Our son had the ribs, he thoroughly enjoyed them, they looked incredible. The bar is well stocked and a top notch bartender also.
Tuesdays are great!
We had a family dinner booked through OpenTable. The restaurant confirmed my reservation via text right after I made it on OpenTable. Then again they called less than an hour before our reservation to make sure we were still coming. The whole point of me using OpenTable is so that I can pick a date and time and not have to worry about calls and confirmations. Leave me alone and just accept my OpenTable reservation.
Service was somewhat slow, but it was a busy Saturday night.
Food was above average, but sauce on my ribs was a little too thick.
Cocktails and Desert were fantastic.
Be sure to try the Cheese Fritters.
Food was excellent as always. Hillary is great!
This restaurant was as amazing this visit as it has been all the past visits. Maya's food is delicious and service is incredible. Always be sure to check out the specials! They change seasonally and are always delicious!
Steak was perfectly rare. That’s hard to do! Prompt, friendly service; was not rushed.
Always a good experience. I thought the lamb was a bit on the very spicy side, even though we ordered mild. Servers were really great too. The extra veggies we got....wow. Could just dine on them.
Great food! I've been here multiple times. Love the cornbread and brussel sprouts!
Great food. Great service. My mom has a severe allergy to pepper and the chef and waiting team worked together to give her a deliciously tasting meal.
Charlottesville has so many wonderful restaurants, but Maya did not live up to its ratings. The noise level in the back room was ear shattering due to a large party. The server was inattentive and disappeared for lengthy periods. The sides on one plate were cold. We had to go find a random server to ask that it be corrected. It did not get fixed until our original server reappeared. Besides all the above, the food was mediocre overall. A definite miss.
Greeted warmly when arrived and seated quickly. Waitress was attentive and all ways available.
It was an interesting menu. The meal was very tasty--We were very pleased and will return when in the area again.
Really disappointed in food since we were referred by someone who really likes to eat healthy. Waitress couldn't even tell us what was in a vegetarian dish, steak was marginal mushroom appetizer had one type of mushroom and then a whole bunch of other things...not mushrooms, and they were not able to decant our wine. Said they "couldn't find one" and then said theirs "were not in good enough shape to use." Hmmm.
My wife and I dined there for the first time and I was really disappointed. I ordered the mushroom plate for a starter. Rather bland. Only good thing was the pork belly (how can that be bad). I ordered their Sunday special, fried chicken. I figured, this was a place that specialized in southern cooking and who invented fried chicken but southerners, so it had to be good. Nope, what I got was a tasteless piece of greasy chicken that was not golden brown but, instead, rather grey. The waitress asked me how it was and I indicated I was not happy. They immediately offered a replacement (good service). I ordered the crab cakes. Also rather tasteless. My wife had oysters to start (ok) and trout with a side of brussel sprouts (really good). They comped me the price of my main dish (once again, good service). But they really need to get a decent chef. We won't return.
One of our favorite places for a casual dinner but this visit not quite up to par with regard to food and service.
Valentines Day- menu was pre-set. Appetizers dried out as if prepared well in advance. Food not as good as usual. Suspect that due to busy day, food not quite what it usually is, as I have eaten here several times previously.
Always a great evening out at Maya - terrific food and the best martinis ever!
Didnt like being seated in back room directly below a ramp.
