Located in the center of Charlottesville Virginia’s Midtown, MAYA serves dinner 7 days a week and brunch on Sundays. Our “made from scratch” menu is prepared daily in honor of the Old Southern Kitchen.
We visited Maya as part of Restaurant Week. We were enthused about the event because we are new to the Charlottesville area. We have visited 3 restaurants in 3 nights and Maya has been our favorite by far. Interesting drink menu was followed by a diverse Restaurant Week menu. attractive setting with historic looking brick and beams and adequately spaced seating. service was unobtrusive but very timely. the servings were properly proportioned and all 3 were delicious. It is a restaurant we definitely plan to visit again, which is entirely the idea behind restaurant week.
Went to Maya for Restaurant Week....great food, great service.....love this restaurant!
Fabulous everything for restaurant week.
We were looking forward to trying Maya during restaurant week. We had a 7pm reservation and arrived a few minutes early but were seated right away. Drinks and appetizers were very good. Dinners were fine but little things were disappointing - broccoli was overcooked and mushy, mashed potatoes were cold and had started to solidify. All this was tolerable but then the manager came over to our table and says loudly "BAM" while pointing - next thing we know a young man hustles over and asks to take our plates. Our deserts were delivered quickly and so was the check. I guess they were ready for us to leave. We were there for under 90 minutes.
The wait staff was fine but the manager ruined the evening.
Normally, I think Maya is above average - not stellar, but a solid choice with good flavors and substantial portions. Unfortunately, this time for Restaurant Week was a bit subpar in the flavor department, though the options were still inventive. Still recommended, but a la carte is the way to go!
Had a great time with my wife and teen daughter. It was restaurant week so the menu was set and the price was $39 per person for a three course meal. The food was delicious, we talked about coming back, but probably only when there is a discount, eating out on a budget. Happy hour is only served at the bar.
Amazing menu for Charlottesville restaurant week!
Being our first time to Charlottesville, we found the Maya online and decided to attend based on recommendation from hotel. a quaint restaurant with a nice bar and friendly staff.
However, the owner seemed to be working due to lack of having a GM which is loudly stated as he joined a couple at the bar which i don't believe he knew. He was sipping his whiskey out of a coffee mug, which he loudly announced. Get it He was LOUD!! He was extremely loud discussing in front of bar tender and wait staff wages he pays his employees, how taxes in Charlottesville for resataurantors are outrageous, complaining , complaining complaining. Get out of restaurant business then... its a tough business!!
Kudos to the chef and our waitress as food and service was outstanding!! Owner should stay out of sight!!
The food was fantastic and the service was great! We look forward to dinning at Maya again.
We booked Maya as a last minute date night and had a wonderful experience! The Brussels sprout were AMAZING! Is it OK to like a side as much as the main course? We will definitely go back for dinner in the future.
Some of the best food in town! Totally worth the price.
Had a wonderful New Years Day supper here. Food was first rate and service just as good. Consistently a winner no matter the reason for a great meal!
Love this place, my favorite restaurant in Charlottesville! Went for our pre-New Year's party dinner. Always eat in the bar area. Big city noise level but in a local tavern atmosphere. Ted, the bartender, is super, very engaging and never lets anyone at the bar drink alone! You will make new friends every time you go in the place, guaranteed! Food was wonderful, had the ribs and my fiancée the trout. Nice to be served very hot food, and their sides are interesting and eclectic.....oh, and very yummy! Nice selection of wines and spirits, and if you have room for dessert, go for it!
Short ribs were too fatty
Excellent service. The noise level was a moderate in some areas of the restaurant, but the staff was very accommodating and set up a table for us in a quieter area. Our server was also extremely friendly and appropriately attentive. I ordered the trout and my wife ordered the baby back ribs, both of which were excellent. Definitely worth another visit.
The food is absolutely amazing; a clean your plate experience every time.
The food was, as always, excellent. Our server (Joyce) was friendly and efficient, and just plain good at her job. We all (four of us) thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and I took some of my chicken home because I just couldn’t manage it. It was just delicious the next day.
Maya is a favorite “go to” for our family summer and winter, and is consistently dependable for good food that is never ordinary.
Food, as always, was so delicious!
The restaurant was very busy Christmas Eve, so we’re guessing that’s why we had to wait a long time for our main courses to be served. Other than that we had a nice evening!
My husband and I did a 10 day roadtrip around Virginia and North Carolina and Maya was definitely the best restaurant we went to. So glad we found this gem.
As most reviews mention, you must try the pimento cheese fritters - although they are very rich so make sure you have someone or two to share them with (comes with three). We also shared the soup special which was potato leek and it was fantastic. So much flavor and perfect texture. For dinner I had the pork tenderloin which was flavorful and juicy - will definitely try to duplicate the spice rub at home. I don't think it needed the slaw on top, but the slaw was flavorful on its own. Hubby had the hangar steak and he would only let me have one bite... one delicious bite! The only thing that let us down a bit was the sautéed leafy greens - seemed like they tried to make them too healthy and there wasn't enough butter or something, they were a bit raw and dry for what I would expect from sautéed greens. And don't skip the peanut butter fluff pie. We debated (for quite awhile) ordering another slice.
Beyond the food, the service was fantastic - very attentive and friendly. If we are ever in the area again, we will be certain to stop by.
Food was great. Service was really nice. As a parent of a UVA student, I have been searching for a restaurant that I really enjoyed. This is southern food, and just feels homey.
Excellent menu, service, ambiance and food always exceeds expectations
The staff was courteous and friendly. The food was prepared as requested. The dessert was very good.
Absolutely the most wonderful meal. Best crab cakes I've ever had. Brussel sprouts to convert even the most veggie-skeptical, and the cheese grits were a true Southern great. The only criticism is that the entrance to the restaurant needs to better identified.
Great food great staff and fabulous bartender- $12 tuesdays is the best deal in town
Food was absolutely fantastic. Table of 6 so we expected things to take a little longer and it did. I took quite a while to get our drinks. Was rather loud...Overall, a fantastic experience and would recommend.
Simple delicious food and perfect cocktails - very welcoming atmosphere
Good food, good service. Do not like being in that big back room. It's chilly and noisy. Feels like a banquet room.
The food and service at Maya are always superb. It is one of our favorite restaurants in Charlottesvile.
Excellent service from pre-dinner drinks at bar all the way through to dessert. Nobody does better southern food. Quality and flavors are unmatched.
The waitress Hillary was awesome! Food was good service was excellent as always!
Consistently good Southern-influenced upscale dining. Warm, attentive service. Relaxed atmosphere.
Food was fantastic.
Everything was great, with one exception. ... would like more vegetarian options. We tried the seitan and weren’t huge fans of the consistency. Everything else was exceptional and we had a lovely evening!
Thanksgivings away from home
We visited Maya while in Charlottesville for Thanksgiving. The menu had several options for an appetizer, main course, and dessert at a set price. The service and food were EPIC. Everyone was impressed with the freshness and amazing food flavors. I would definitely recommend.
Always enjoy Maya! We’ve had our last two Thanksgiving dinners there too and have really enjoyed the delicious food and the friendly, prompt service.
I had such a happy birthday with the folks at Maya!! The fish with grits and Brussels was ABSOLUTELY SUPER! Thanks for bday dessert great service and cocktails 🍸
Food and drink were good and interesting. They put us in a back room by ourselves while there were still tables available in the main room. Not sure why. Shame, as the lack of atmosphere took away from what was otherwise a good experience
Food was delicious and plentiful. Only issues for were that salad was served right before the main course. So no time to enjoy. Then key lime pie was really key lime cheesecake. It was still good, but not what we were expecting. I'd definitely go back.
