Located in the center of Charlottesville Virginia’s Midtown, MAYA serves dinner 7 days a week and brunch on Sundays. Our “made from scratch” menu is prepared daily in honor of the Old Southern Kitchen.
The food (hanger steak and ribs) was pretty good and the servers were likable. The food was a bit slow despite not being very busy. Overall - would go back but nothing super special.
Popped in on a Tuesday after booking online. Discovered special 12 dollar mains on a Tuesday - great value though my steak was small. My wife's chicken portion was generous though - she gave me some to try - very nice. Joyce, our waitress, was friendly and helpful. Restaurant moderately busy but service reasonably quick.
Not enough time was given between the appetizers and the main course. Our dinner was half social and half professional, between an old UVa couple and a new, though mature, couple. We already knew we enjoyed talking with one another, and will again, because altogether it was a very pleasant experience. But the fast service made us feel rushed. And although the restaurant was full of people, it was not crowded with people waiting to sit down.
I hosted a work dinner there and everything was amazing. We (9 of us) were seated promptly, and everything from the food, service ambiance was hands down amazing. I had the local trout and it melted in my mouth. I highly recommend.
Incredible food and service... highly recommend!!
There wasn't anything particularly bad about the experience; mostly, we just felt the food wasn't worth the price. Entree included a piece of fish and two side dishes, and the fish was piping hot but the sides were lukewarm, as if it had been sitting for a while. The service was good, but there's better food to be had elsewhere in Charlottesville.
Stylishly prepared Southern comfort food - excellent bartending
Excellent food! My wife and I were both impressed! We would highly recommend it.
This is perhaps the fifth time my husband and I have visited Maya. Each visit has been excellent. We are always greeted immediately when we enter the restaurant. The wait staff is friendly and efficient and the food is excellent. Last Saturday, I had crab cakes, broccoli and collard greens along with a delicious salad. One of our friends ordered dessert too- a brownie with homemade ice cream. She was generous enough to offer a bite to me. I’m not a huge sweet eater, but I definitely could become one if I had unlimited access to the ice cream they serve. Absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant. It is quickly becoming our very favorite one in Charlottesville.
Stumbled upon Maya during an intranet search for a good place to eat near our hotel. The restaurant was very cozy inside with a small downstairs area and large outside area for seating. We had noted that we were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and they sent over a glass of champagne. It was a nice start to a great meal. The trout and pork tenderloin were both delicious. I found the trout to be executed perfectly with a super crispy skin that didn’t dry out the filet. The sides were all wonderful. We also had some delicious dessert to share. This is a great place for people that appreciate food. My husband was able to get a local beer and they had a large wine list and full bar. The delicious food came out quickly and staff was super nice and welcoming. Great spot.
Delicious! We were a larger group and they had enough flexibility to seat us in a room that was quieter so we could talk and hear each other. Thanks!
Great venue with wonderful outdoor seating. Varied menu—delicious ribs and crab cakes. Wonderful cocktails and wine list. Lisa was our server and she took great care of us!
Sitting on the porch gave us the privilege of hearing the mariachi band next door without them coming to our table.
The food was excellent! We especially loved the oyster appetizer. I would highly recommend to others.
Most Everything we ordered was great, the steak was not a great cut but full of flavor. The oyster appetizer was amazing as well as Brussels sprouts & catfish. A good southern food place. Outside was really nice, but there was an issue with flys. Great service. We will go again.
Delicious southern cuisine. I had the trout (which was amazing), broccoli, and mac and cheese. I had the Lynchburg Lemonade as my cocktail (which was very strong but I wasn't driving so no complaints on my end!) My partner had the chicken, the okra special, and mac and cheese. You always know a restaurant is great when their chicken entree competes with anything on the menu! Great spot and easy to get to!
Everything was excellent at Maya. The service was outstanding and you could never expect anything more from the quality of the food.
We enjoyed our last night in Charlottesville with a wonderful Southern dinner. We were enthusiastically greeted by the serve staff. Our waitress, Joyce, was a pure joy. She was pleasant and enthusiastic. Her suggestions were spot on. Everyone must try the pimento cheese fritters! A great start to our meal. Maya is a must go to Southern delight!
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Maya. It was our first time. The online reviews were great, I loved the menu when I read it online, and the meal lived up to its reviews. My husband got the catfish, which was divine, and I ordered the crab cakes, which were also fantastic. The menu is nuanced and interesting and the food was cooked to perfection. Our waiter was excellent.
I do have two comments that led me to give Maya four stars instead of five: I think the wine offerings by the glass did not match the high level of the food. (We didn't feel like having a bottle that night so I did not look at the bottle selection.)
And the ambiance of the room we were in--the smaller side room--is poor. I recommend patrons try to book the main room or outside.
But overall, the dinner was memorable and excellent, as was our waiter, whose name, I think was Cory or Coby. Thanks!
It is in a charming building but they had only one waitress for the entire upstairs room. The menu is pretty limited. The appetizers of pimento cheese, fried green tomato and cornmeal oysters were very good. My daughters crab cakes were not good. My steak was okay-had much better. Husband had special: boneless fried chicken and he loved it. Are much better places in Charlottesville. But it’s okay.
We had an amazing meal here. The pork tenderloin was a great dish. Piemonte cheese fritters were an awesome start. Close with the peanut butter fluff and lookout, you may feel like you had the perfect meal. Will be back for sure.
Staff was very courteous and attentive. Food was prepared correctly and on a timely manner.
Seemed like the kitchen was a little off - took along time to get our food - not typical
Excellent southern food - comfort food done well. Took my son and his UVA roommates plus my daughter out for a treat and we all enjoyed our main courses (catfish, steak, ribs, pork) and sides esp the Mac & cheese and biscuits. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and helped guide our choices with humor and enthusiasm. We loved it!!
Always a favorite - fantastic bartender, great wait staff and wonderful food - plus who can beat $12 Tuesdays - dinner and two sides for twelve buck!
We had a great time at Maya. Excellent food and ambience. I have been there 4 times and have never been disappointed.
Excellent cuisine, easy access. Joyce is a wonderful wait person.
Loved the food and had great service sitting outside!
Maya is our go to restaurant for a guaranteed enjoyable dining experience.
My husband and I dined at Maya as part our our anniversary celebration. We made an Open Table note of this, and the server was kind enough to wish us a happy anniversary and provide a couple of other special touches for our celebration as well. I had the fried catfish with grits and sauteed green beans, and all was delicious and nice sized portions, and my husband had the pork tenderloin with broccoli and whipped potatoes - he said the potatoes were outstanding. We started we an order or the pimiento cheese fritters, which I would say are a must do. Overall, good food and wonderful service.
We were visiting Charlottesville last week and gave Maya a try on Wednesday night. (We were staying at The Draftsman and it was an easy walk from our hotel.) We had such a great experience with excellent food, terrific server (Hilary) and fun atmosphere that we returned on Sunday night with friends who had joined us for the UVA reunion weekend. They loved it too! Our server was Steve and he too was fantastic! We loved the trout, catfish and steak entrees, as well as the amazing Mac and Cheese, fried green tomato appetizer and the cocktails were delicious. Highly recommend the Flaming Peach ; ) Great place!! Will definitely return on our next visit to C'ville.
Fried oysters weren't as crispy or as tasty as I like. Lentil salad good, trout entry that my friends had they seemed to enjoy.
Food and drinks were great. Service was amazing. Appetizers maybe a little small for the price, but the overall appearance of the playing style was extremely well done.
Great food. Great Server, food was good. Drinks were good. I'd love to come back
Service was very slow - they comp’d us our drinks because of it. I ordered scallops - was disappointed there were only 3 given the size.
All in our party loved their dishes, server was very helpful. Only downside was how long it took to be served, not a usual occurrence I’m told.
We always, always love Orzo. The food, wine, and service are just impeccable.
I genuinely don’t understand the positive reviews. This place was a beyond ripoff. It was slow. Half the food was cold. The grits tasted like lemon, so much so that someone commented it tasted like lemonade. And the dessert was driest pound cake I’ve ever had - it’s actually impressive how dry they got it.
For a prix fixe menu - at $60/head - with extremely minimal options, I expect the meal to be PERFECTION.
This was far from perfect.
Food is good. Crab cake portion is ridiculously small for the price. 2 crab cakes at 2” each. Delicious but it was appetizer size. Barking door next door is distracting. Waitress was lovely and helpful. Great service.
First time dining at Maya. Dined outdoors on a beautiful night. Great salad, food and cocktails! The pork tenderloin and brussel sprouts were to die for!
