Max's of Redwood City Ratings and Reviews
I met an old high school friend for lunch at Max's Redwood City, having had lunch earlier in the week at the Original Max's in Burlingame. I ordered the same food at both restaurants just so I could compare: Matzo ball soup and a pastrami sandwich. Unlike Original Max's, where the soup properly came out very hot, the first try at this restaurant was barely luke warm soup, which I had to send back. It was fine on the second try, but an attentive chef/server would not let that happen. The sandwich was fine. The server was o.k., but also not as attentive as the lady who served me at Original Max's. Thus, I would rank this experience as good but not as satisfying as Original Max's.
I enjoyed our family meal here, even if it was two wives, me, and 4 children! What I didn't like was that we kept asking the 14 year old young lady to get up and get water (she was the most accessible and not taking care of the little ones), and the servers not once asked us if we'd like water! Wow, how obvious could we have been. I'm pretty sure the server never once came by until our water cups were all filled to ask how everything was; FINE since we just served ourselves and the food was good! The wait for the food was not cool either, pretty long for what should have been some easy stuff, aside from the pot pies. We just thought they would ask if we wanted the kids food sooner, since plain friggin pasta with butter isn't a very hard reheat feat! SMH, overall, I would do it again, the food was good, but we'll be a little more pushy next time if needed.
We waited 5-10 minutes for the host to come to the front, then another few minutes for our table to be ready. Even though it wasn't full, those w/o reservations were asked to wait 15-25 min. Our drinks, appetizer and bread were brought out one at a time over the 1st 45 minutes of our wait, bread coming out last. We'd been there about an hour and a half before our food came out. Grilled salmon salad was pretty good, although the salmon didn't have a lot of flavor. Pan seared salmon was delicious. Not-so-mini Reuben was to-do, as was the chicken Caesar salad. The kids menu ravioli with pesto seemed to be good. No one really checked to see how we were doing or update us about the wait. Maybe they were understaffed tonight.
I went here after a movie to take my brother & his family out. I had been worried about making it on time to our reservation because opentable said only a couple spots left... However, the restaurant was empty. it would have been nice to know ahead of time so we could have taken our time a bit more heading from the theater with kids.
However, we were immediately sat and the food for the kids was good. The bartender didn't know how to make a Dark n stormy and while he attempted it... it failed spectacularly. However, I'm not going to hold it against him at all.
Our food was quite good and the service was ok. She didn't come by a lot... I think it was because we were a young group. However, we make really good money and it's a bit annoying to see other older groups get much better service because the wait staff thinks they'll tip better. You never know what sort of tip you're walking away from. Our bill was close to $200 and I always start my tips at %20 percent and go up. You think people would know that in the Silicon Valley age does not say who is going to be a good customer and won't.
made reservations for 4 at 1:30pm. we arrived early at 1:00 pm. no one was at the hostess desk.
there were two partys waiting before us. hostess finally acknowledges. 5min go by and the 1st party gets seated. another 5 min go by and the 2nd party gets seated. by the way there were two tables in the front and 6 empty tables in the back. they acknowledge our reservation but did now say anything after that. so we waited. another party comes in off the street (another wait for them) then in two minutes they get seated in the front. i asked the man why did you seat them? we were clearly here before them. he said you have a reservation at 1:30, you get seated at 1:30. well that is NOT good customer service. i do not recommend this Max's especially when this hostess is working.
I've been going to Max's Cafes for a long time. The Opera Cafe in Palo Alto is the best one, but the others have historically been comparable for atmosphere and food quality.
I hadn't been to this one for a long time. It was fine, but I usually expect a bit more out of Max's. Our waiter was very nice but didn't speak English well at all, which led to a number of communication issues regarding orders and menus. Some of my favorite items have been dropped from the menu. My food was very good, but it used to be great. The desserts are still spectacular, but the vibe isn't quite the same. It's not a bad restaurant, I just have memories of it from a different time when it was a bit slicker in service and offerings.
I remember a Max Pastrami sandwich many years ago that was so thick I could barely bite into it. The one I ordered Sun was far from that. The Pastrami was dry and not a thick filling. On the other side my husband loved the Chicken Marsala.
We will find a better Pastrami elsewhere .
We went for my daughters 17th birthday and it was not what we expected. We were seated promptly however it took some time for a server to come to our table. The food we ordered was average at best my husbands vegetable and my daughters meal were both cold and the prime rib was tasteless. The table next to ours was so loud my husband finally had to ask them to be quiet. The staff were friendly but the over all experience was not what I remembered.
Max's serves great food, as always. It's super for "deli" food and all kinds of "comfort food" meals. They make some of the best Super Nachos *anywhere*, better than most Mexican restaurants! Great sandwiches (wonderful Ruebens), stuffed potatoes, outstanding Mac & Cheese. Desserts to kill for. Generous portions. Although we don't often get "adult beverages", Max's has a great drink menu. It's not inexpensive, but delivers good value.
The food was very good as usual for Max's, but the service was ridiculously slow. It took about 15-20mins just to get the waitress over to take our order. Once ordered another 20-25mins for the soups and then waiting for the dinners. I'm not one to rush through dinner, but come on, it was extremely slow. I ended up having to go to the bar to have the bill settled because we couldn't wait any longer on the waitress.
Maxed Out! Years ago I ate at several Max's locations: SF, Burlingame, Belmont, etc. and remember the fresh salads, gigantic sandwiches and great desserts all of which were really delicious. Recently five of us had lunch at Max's in Redwood City and I am sad to say that it was a huge disappointment. My corned beef on rye with one side (they used to give three different salads as a side to their sandwiches) came on two very thin slices of stale rye with a side of coleslaw. It was impossible to hold the sandwich together because the bread fell apart as soon as it was touched and instead of a generous amount of corned beef as I remember from years ago, now there were a few slices of what seemed to be packaged corned beef. The coleslaw had virtually no dressing, was unseasoned and didn't taste fresh. I asked for it to be exchanged for potato salad (which I also recall as being delicious), but this turned out to be no better than the slaw: bland, gooey and not fresh. My friends did not fare better with taco salads (with very hot sauce which pooled at the bottom of the soup plates), a chicken quesadilla which could be surpassed by Taco Bell's and a vegetarian omelet that actually was ok. Needless to say, we passed on dessert. On a busy Saturday lunch time when the mall lot was nearly full, few tables were busy here, but in spite of that service was slow. Considering the fall in quality of the food, it is hard to believe that Max's is going to be around for long.
Arrived early for reservation. Seated immediately and server appeared. Very attentive service. Noise level was not high (surprise - but we were seated in a booth). Value for food was excellent. Friendly cordial staff. My new "go to" place when in the area. Easy parking
Nice renovation after the fire.
BTW - Max's Classic Grilled Cheese is the BEST!!!!
RWC Max's used to be a fun spot with quality food at a good price. Now just feels dated and run down. Food was poor quality. Even the once stacked Rueben was meh, chicken wings tasted old and bacon cheeseburger for $17 was inedible! Service is still great but the food needs improvement.
Max's was perfect for our family breakfast with a group of 14. Waitress was cheerful, efficient and thoughtful. The food was good American "eats" - Joe's special was tasty, pancakes were fluffy good, eggs, bacon, hash browns - best of diner food. With few restaurants willing to take a group reservation on a Sunday morning, Max's allowed our kids & grandkids from Palo Alto, Santa Cruz and Colorado Springs to have a fun morning over food and conversation!
