Just Make It Max's!
The turkey dinner for thanksgiving was so-so. Turkey was dry and dressing was a bit burned. Veggies and mash potatoes were good. Service was good even though it was busy.
Service was stellar, food was good and abundant! We live in the Diablo Valley and the one by us closed years ago, so when we were out this way it was great to visit an old favorite
Ordered the always favorite chicken pot pie. A bit disappointed as they seem to have parsed out the chicken sparingly as well as the gravy/broth. I had mostly celery and carrots under a somewhat still doughy shell. A friend with me experienced the same. Bad pot pie day? When my friends ordered their favorite carrot cake, unfortunately they found it dry and unenjoyable. When it was brought to the attention of our server, he referred it to a manager(?) who seemed offended at their not liking the product. Because they each had tried a bite or two, he said he would credit for half a slice. Half a slice??!!? Really!?! He relented and credited the whole amount of the cake slice, but based on his attitude and the double food disappointment, doubt we will be visiting this location again.
The Restaurant could use a good cleaning especially the floors in the dining room.
Employees are very nice and the food is usually good. The restaurant allows non guide dogs in with there owners in the dining room, that was a deal breaker for me. I have had dogs my while life and love dogs but would never take them inside of a restaurant.
NOT BAD BUT INCREDIBLY SLOW SERVICE AND THE RESTAURANT WAS PRETTY EMPTY.
Used to eat at Max's in San Francisco when I lived there. Always loved it. Tried the Redwood City location last week and it was just as good as the SF locations. Great, diverse menu, huge portions and great service. Couldn't be more satisfied.
We travelled 42 minutes during commute time to visit Max's of Redwood City because our local Max's, at Stanford Shopping Center, has closed.
We were dismayed to find the restaurant so empty between 6:15 and 7:45, on a Thursday, because we fear that means this RC Max's isn't long for this world. We love the Prime Rib Thurs - Sat. special: it's one of the bet deals in the area and we don't want to lose it. 42 minutes is quite a long time, in our opinion, to travel for dinner, so we suspect Max's at Stanford's Customers won't make the trip enough to sustain this Redwood City outpost, about 1/4 mi North of the Woodside Road underpass on El Camino.
The Prime Rib dinner was outstanding. Very generous slab of beef; large baked potato with the works; creamed spinach or broccoli; and four large delicious cookies for dessert. All for $30. Wine list extensive and reasonable. A plea to all the remaining carnivores out there: give it a try. If there's two of you, the carpool lane on 101 should make it faster than 42 minutes (from South Palo Alto area). That's what we'll try next time!.
I had the Max's Chicken salad and there was a lot less chicken than in salads past, the rolls were hard
and the restaurant furnishings and carpet and paint and tile is getting tired-could use a decor update.
Still a good place that always has openings and parking and is centrally located to meet for lunch or dinner.
Great service and good comfort food!
Hadn't been there for a while, but I really enjoyed it this time around! Glad it's open all day - we did not feel rushed.
I indicated on the reservation that it was a birthday celebration.
They never did squat. No candle, no cookie, no sorry.
Very good sandwiches with multiple options for the included side. My family and I enjoyed the chicken salad, hot pastrami, and Reuben sandwiches very much, as well as the Caesar salad and French fries sides. We sat in the bar to watch the World Cup, and was surprised with the bar tender's most attentive table service.
Prices are reasonable, and lunch at Max's Redwood City was most satisfying. I would definitely return.
We were a bit disappointed in our meal on June 17, Father's Day. The restaurant was not crowded but our order was not delivered correctly and the food was not great. My husband ordered rye toast with his omelet and received a biscuit. My son had a very dry burrito and had to ask for salsa to go with it. My daughter-in-law had an omelet and had asked for tomatoes in it. They delivered a plate of sliced tomatoes along side the omelet. My grand daughter ordered pancakes with strawberries on it. She received a bowl of strawberry jam or preserves along side.
We were only a group of 7 and were seated immediately as we arrived, I must say we may have to think about returning.
I live in San Francisco and have dined at the various Max's locations that have existed in San Francisco for many years. My last visit to Max's Opera Cafe was about a year ago. The service, food, staff, and overall ambiance has always been a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being outstanding). I Cannot say the same for Max's of Redwood City. I will not return. The waitress also forgot to give me my rewards card when I paid the bill
Should have been clued in by the filthy front door. Everything was dirty - it took over an hour to get food (even though our her tables being served ), food arrived cold and disgusting. Complaining did NOTHING!!!!!! They must be closing soon. Worst experience. I only gave it one star because I had to write review but it deserves zero stars
Went there for Mother’s Day with all my kids.. in the beginning it was a little confusing because we had a reservation so I thought they would have a table waiting for us but I don’t know how they run the place so we waited for are table to be ready. It was quite busy so I think everybody there was rushing around (Wait staff) so to be expected. Good food waitress was really good. Meal came we waited for a bit! Over all I would come back again on a non-holiday to give my over all experience.
The Prime Rib special is wonderful and BIG! For small eaters, it's enough to share. The house salad was a delightful surprise. The bread rolls were nice and warm. The Caesar salad enjoyed by significant other was extremely delicious. The prime rib special even came with cookies which were great for breakfast the next day.
You certainly get value for your money here. If you are looking for a quiet dining spot, this isn't it. But if screaming children don't bother you, it's a good place for a more than decent meal.
Excellent food. Large portions. Great service.
Kinda bummed ....it was my partners birthday dinner. I entered this information on my reservation. No one asked or even delivered a cracker with a candle :(
Christmas decorations need to come down...it’s March!
I love this Max's location, it's casual, comfortable and the food is always good.
We had a nice time. The server was patient with my dad who needed some extra help. The food was tasty. We went ahead and had dessert and took half dinner and half dessert home.
We had a very nice meal for not very much money. Service was top notch. We always enjoy going to Max's!
I met an old high school friend for lunch at Max's Redwood City, having had lunch earlier in the week at the Original Max's in Burlingame. I ordered the same food at both restaurants just so I could compare: Matzo ball soup and a pastrami sandwich. Unlike Original Max's, where the soup properly came out very hot, the first try at this restaurant was barely luke warm soup, which I had to send back. It was fine on the second try, but an attentive chef/server would not let that happen. The sandwich was fine. The server was o.k., but also not as attentive as the lady who served me at Original Max's. Thus, I would rank this experience as good but not as satisfying as Original Max's.
Someone with a child came into the restaurant and went up to patrons holding up a sign requesting money. The wait staff all seemed oblivious to what was going on. She left when none of the patrons gave her money. I was concerned about the child.
Received immediate seating with our Open Table reservation.
I enjoyed our family meal here, even if it was two wives, me, and 4 children! What I didn't like was that we kept asking the 14 year old young lady to get up and get water (she was the most accessible and not taking care of the little ones), and the servers not once asked us if we'd like water! Wow, how obvious could we have been. I'm pretty sure the server never once came by until our water cups were all filled to ask how everything was; FINE since we just served ourselves and the food was good! The wait for the food was not cool either, pretty long for what should have been some easy stuff, aside from the pot pies. We just thought they would ask if we wanted the kids food sooner, since plain friggin pasta with butter isn't a very hard reheat feat! SMH, overall, I would do it again, the food was good, but we'll be a little more pushy next time if needed.
Max's is one of the few deli type restaurants still to be found. A varied menu that can please most everyone. Though the food is OK, it is still a good place to go in a "pinch".
Good food and great service! The desserts are delicious 😋
Just a fun first date. Great place for it, they have all kinds of foods. Something for everyone. Checked on by our waiter just enough, not so much that it was annoying, the right amount so my water glass was always full.
Awesome place, great service it was perfect for my family gathering.
Attentive staff and delicious comfort food. Great for families, young and old.
Had a new waiter and he did fine. You get big servings so plenty of food.
Will be back.
Fun, welcoming place to take guests or meet up with friends. There is truly something for everyone with an expansive menu, good service, and reasonable prices. This was a return experience and I will be returning again and again.
We waited 5-10 minutes for the host to come to the front, then another few minutes for our table to be ready. Even though it wasn't full, those w/o reservations were asked to wait 15-25 min. Our drinks, appetizer and bread were brought out one at a time over the 1st 45 minutes of our wait, bread coming out last. We'd been there about an hour and a half before our food came out. Grilled salmon salad was pretty good, although the salmon didn't have a lot of flavor. Pan seared salmon was delicious. Not-so-mini Reuben was to-do, as was the chicken Caesar salad. The kids menu ravioli with pesto seemed to be good. No one really checked to see how we were doing or update us about the wait. Maybe they were understaffed tonight.
I went here after a movie to take my brother & his family out. I had been worried about making it on time to our reservation because opentable said only a couple spots left... However, the restaurant was empty. it would have been nice to know ahead of time so we could have taken our time a bit more heading from the theater with kids.
However, we were immediately sat and the food for the kids was good. The bartender didn't know how to make a Dark n stormy and while he attempted it... it failed spectacularly. However, I'm not going to hold it against him at all.
Our food was quite good and the service was ok. She didn't come by a lot... I think it was because we were a young group. However, we make really good money and it's a bit annoying to see other older groups get much better service because the wait staff thinks they'll tip better. You never know what sort of tip you're walking away from. Our bill was close to $200 and I always start my tips at %20 percent and go up. You think people would know that in the Silicon Valley age does not say who is going to be a good customer and won't.
Four of us gathered for a quick lunch and we enjoyed ourselves. Wait staff was friendly, food good and the parking was right out front.
made reservations for 4 at 1:30pm. we arrived early at 1:00 pm. no one was at the hostess desk.
there were two partys waiting before us. hostess finally acknowledges. 5min go by and the 1st party gets seated. another 5 min go by and the 2nd party gets seated. by the way there were two tables in the front and 6 empty tables in the back. they acknowledge our reservation but did now say anything after that. so we waited. another party comes in off the street (another wait for them) then in two minutes they get seated in the front. i asked the man why did you seat them? we were clearly here before them. he said you have a reservation at 1:30, you get seated at 1:30. well that is NOT good customer service. i do not recommend this Max's especially when this hostess is working.
No waiting with Open Table Reservation. Service was excellent and very friendly staff.
I've been going to Max's Cafes for a long time. The Opera Cafe in Palo Alto is the best one, but the others have historically been comparable for atmosphere and food quality.
I hadn't been to this one for a long time. It was fine, but I usually expect a bit more out of Max's. Our waiter was very nice but didn't speak English well at all, which led to a number of communication issues regarding orders and menus. Some of my favorite items have been dropped from the menu. My food was very good, but it used to be great. The desserts are still spectacular, but the vibe isn't quite the same. It's not a bad restaurant, I just have memories of it from a different time when it was a bit slicker in service and offerings.
