Max Brenner - Union Square Ratings and Reviews
We booked for 6.15 and 30 mins later were still waiting to be seated. We had a bus tour at 7.45 so by the time our food came out (mains only as no time) we had to shovel it in and have our server bring the bill while we were eating so we could jump and run, only just made the bus as it was. Very disappointed as I love this restaurant so was excited to revisit while in NYC but a 30 min wait for a reserved table isnt adequate.
We had a large party that included a five year old and a three month old - Max Brenners was the PERFECT choice. Everyone ordered something different and 100% of our party LOVED their dish. Drinks, entrees, desserts and chocolate martinis were all exquisite. Casual atmosphere with cute Christmas decor - all around, a wonderful experience!
My boyfriend got a burger and he loved it. I got the original max and cheese and felt like it was lacking. We ordered a baked cookie dream and it came out ice cold. They offered to make us another but we decided to not get it since we were full from dinner. Cute place, and the drinks were delicious but the food and experience was subpar.
My experience at Max Brenner used to be high end feeling and really special. Unfortunately, it felt very much like a run down chain during this visit. The wallpaper peeling off the wall, dirty silverware and glassware, the food was cold, and things just felt rushed and sloppy. I’m sad that it’s not as magical feeling to me as it used to be!
Went on a Sunday evening with my sister and nieces. We were visiting NYC for the weekend. We just had dessert, which was absolutely fantastic!! Our server was very friendly and gave us great advice on what to order. We will definitely go back when we are in NYC.
I had reservations and they wouldn’t even check for it bc they were overwhelmed. We were not seated due to overbooking. The hostess were rude and ignored those with reservations. The place was packed and disorganized. Some patrons were waiting over two hours even though they had a reservation. I’ll never go there again. Not worth the hype. Uncontrolled waiting area and awfully impolite staff. If you can’t accommodate reservations, let the patrons know instead of having us wait with hungry kids.
We went for late lunch before a night show. Reservation made for 2:30 - but it was crowded and we did not get seated until 3:00. Good thing we had time to spare. Fun place, but leave extra time. It’s a bit out of the way- 14th Street -far from theatre district/Times Square. Food was good, burger very good, but one chicken sandwich was supposed to come on Texas Toast; instead it came on regular bread (we had ordered the same sandwich 2 weeks earlier and it was on Texas Toast! So maybe a bit inconsistent). Our Waitress was good, friendly, took order quickly, but food took a long time to come out, others who were seated after us got their food served before us. We Ordered dessert at the same time as meal, since it was crowded, but the dessert was served to us first.
We went there to try the fondue and the hot chocolate. Because I knew that the place is busy I made a reservation for us. But although we had that reservation we needed to wait almost an hour (and we went there even 15 mins before our reservation). That sucked and the girl at the front wasn’t really helpful and guest-friendly. So we chared two Fondues for all in all $50 and it wasn’t even enough for everyone. Even though our service saw the we are five people and we asked if two fondues would be enough (he said yes) there wasn’t enough. We got 4 Strawberries, 4 pieces of banana, 6 cookies and about 6 Marshmallows. And when we asked for a bit more fruit because it’s not a lot we got charged $5 extra for 5 more pieces of strawberries and banana. That was definitely way too expensive and not really fair for the price. Although the chocolate was amazing and the hot chocolate was nice. All in all the restaurant is super fancy and worth a visit but bring a lot of time and money.
Our reservation was at 1:30, we weren't seated until 2:30 and didn't get any food until after 3. Crazy loud. The mob at the entrance actually seemed like a fire hazard. Very overbooked and poorly managed. The waitstaff was friendly and trying hard to keep up but overwhelmed. The food was lukewarm and mediocre. Desserts were delicious. If I ever went back (which I won't) I would go on a weekday afternoon for desserts and hot chocolate only.
Thank goodness I made a reservation! First impression wasn't too great. They first sat us on the first floor on the corner of the very long booth they have and was literally on top of other guests. They then added an additional party to our right and we immediately asked to move our seats to the upstairs portion of the restaurant. Our server was very personable and was extremely busy and should have had much more help. Everything took a very long time to come out and was a bit irritating. When we finally got our burgers and 1 kids meal, our fries were SUPER COLD and needed to be returned to the kitchen. Our burgers were yummy though, thank goodness! The serving size on the other hand was incredibly small. We literally each got 5 waffles fries in a small serving cup and the burgers were small and they each cost $18!!! The waiter tried to make up for all the issues by giving us 2 free hot chocolates and a free vanilla shake which was super nice. This place is way too small to accommodate as many people as they squeeze everywhere. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless to grab a cup of hot cocoa on the go. I was very disappointed.
Waited 40 minutes despite a reservation that was made 6 weeks prior. The place was packed with nowhere to wait, however, the hostess kept telling people to step to the side. We were finally given a make shift table after I approached the hostess again and we had to squeeze 2 people on the benched area that was meant for 1 person. I ordered a drink and saw it sitting on the “bar” for 15 minutes. I actually got up and got it myself (it was taken off the bill). Food was brought out while apps were on the table and since the runners had nowhere to put the food, they literally handed it to us in our hands. They didn’t even attempt to remove the used dishes. I had to do it and then had to ask the runner to take them away! Food was mediocre at best. Hot chocolate and chocolate martini were delicious but that was all. Finally, when we were done and bill was paid, they started to clean table (Including wiping down) while we were still sitting there waiting for my niece to get back from restroom. Oh and the bathrooms were pretty gross. We will definately not go back.
The only problem I had was with them not keeping reservations. We had 7:00 reservations & was being told 10 min every time we asked the hostess. After complaining to a manager (we had a limo for the girls & show tickets for the Sweet 16) we were finally seated at 8:00. Also, there is no place to comfortably wait for your table.
Was taken here for my 30th birthday dinner after seeing Charlie and the chocolate factory on broadway. Figured it fit the theme. Food was ok. Service was terrible. We did not receive a specialty cocktail that we ordered but were charged for it. The server was so inattentive that when we made her realize we didn’t receive it before getting the bill she stated “oh should of told me, did you want to wait Bc I can’t take it off your bill” but after the rest of the nightmare we were not waiting so we paid any way. The rest of the nightmare - When my dessert was put down on the table, a churro fondue... it was placed awkward with the tall churros basket on the right side and in order for me (a righty) to dip into the chocolate i had to use my left hand to eat. I was so afraid I was going to knock something over. In the attempt to move the plate slightly to fix the issue the unsturdy cup of chocolate and caramel on top of lit candles fell over and landed on my lap. Wax, hot chocolate, and hot caramel all over me. I went Into the bathroom where I tried to clean what I could off my pants with a paper towel, but was not very successful. Upon returning I asked 4 employees for a rag. 35 mins later finally received one. My pants are ruined, my legs were slightly burnt and we were charged for that dessert too, that we didn’t have more then 2 bites of. No one even offered to help during the entire scenario. I would never return
Took our almost 10 year old daughter to celebrate her special occasion before the theater on a Saturday night. So glad we had reservations because the place was packed! It's not super close to the theater district but it was certainly worth the trip, especially if you're a chocolate lover! I was pleasantly surprised with their healthy options as well, better way to balance the guilty pleasure. Our daughter had breakfast for dinner, mom had "the best mac and cheese" she's "ever had...not too cheesy and the flavors of the bacon and cheese were cooked to perfection"- My avocado/quinoa salad was a little spicy but still really flavorful and light. The "hug mug" for hot chocolate is a clever idea and we were pleasantly surprised when Thomas (our waiter, who was FANTASTIC by the way) brought out a piece of chocolate and sparkler and wished her a happy birthday. THE BEST PART of the evening was the TOP NOTCH customer service. They (Russell, the bar manager and of course Thomas) treated us like we were the only ones in the entire restaurant. They bent over backwards to make sure that we got in and out in time to get to our show and took all of the stress of a rushed evening and made it a night to remember for sure! I highly recommend but will suggest that a 6pm reservation before an 8pm show (especially when the president is in town) is cutting it a bit close! Give yourself a little more time but you can't miss this place! Oh and I think I should also mention that everyone seated around us had smiles on their faces and we're enjoying the entire experience (including the cute couples sharing fondue over open flames). Seemed everyone was as happy as we were to be there.
Service sucked. Had a 2:30 reservation, but they had me down for a different day. Luckily I had an email confimartion confirming I was right. They checked us in, but we didn’t get seated until about 45 minutes later. The front/hostess area was a zoo. There was zero coordination & order. It looked like Mass confusion. Food was pretty good, however we waited about an hour for it after we ordered. Never got any refills, including water. Way too crowded & confusing to really enjoy the atmosphere.
My mom and I visit NYC every year, and were so excited to try something new by going to Max's for lunch. Our waiter was charming, lunch was great and dessert (after much discussion of what to choose!) was delish. That said, I am certainly glad we made reservations. It was packed... which in the weeks before Christmas is expected, BUT there just didn't seem to be much organization. There were other signs in other sections (i.e. take-out counter), but no clear mention of where to checkin with the hostess (and when so busy, you couldn't even see the podium). So, if anyone from Max's is reading this... Thank you, we had a wonderful time. And you handled the crowds well... but maybe a little direction on where to check-in - for a table OR reservations would be helpful. Merry Christmas!
