Max Brenner - Boston Ratings and Reviews
My Boston-area college kids like this place and recommended it for Sunday brunch. Finding street parking was impossible so we used the garage at the Pru ($30). Basic brunch entrees like eggs run $15-20 but are pretty similar in quality to Denny's. Cherries on my Eggo-like waffles appeared to be same as canned ones used in pie filling. Too too pricey for a meh meal. Unlike the experience of other reviewers our server was helpful and diligent and the noise level was low. However, as others have noted, the restaurant did not indicate to OpenTable that we had honored our reservation so we were dinged as no-shows.
We arrived on time for our reservation. We were sat promptly. A server came and took our drink and app order and informed us that our server would be right over. About 10 minutes later two server came, we still did not have our drinks. One of the servers let us know the other server standing behind him would be taking care of us and that our food and drinks would be right out. I told them we had not ordered our food yet.
After waiting another 10 minutes I flagged down our server and asked about our drinks and could we please order our food. He apologized and said he thought we had already ordered. After nearly 30 minutes our drink finally arrived with our app. Both drinks were awful, tasting like straight sticky sweet fruity syrup. We asked for new drinks as well as silverware A gin and tonic and a vodka soda. After waiting another 10 minutes our drinks arrived, we got a vodka and sprite abs a gin and cranberry. The server asked if we wanted them sent back but we declined as we had already waited so long. Our food arrived by way of another server who merely stood at the table holding our food and staring at us. We took our plates from him.
Our server returned, I asked for napkins and water. We finished our meal with out another sighting of our server and no napkins or water I went to the hostess stand to ask them for napkins.
I've been in the industry for years as a FOH Manager and server/bartender for decades. I was amazed at the lack of professionalism and service.
Our food had to be sent back, even though I reaaally hate doing that, but both were cold and unappetizing. Our desserts were half-prepared, almost as if in a rush. We've visited a few times in the past, a couple times it was very busy, but this time was nearly empty. The manager was apologetic, said the server was new and would speak to him about checking the food before serving. We didn't think that was necessary to know but I think he was just flustered and was trying to help. All in all they really are known for chocolate, so forget the food and hit them up for dessert.
This was our fourth time there in two years. The other 3 times were fine but the most recent visit was less than average. Service was so slow and it wasn't even that crowded. We got our food yet didn't have silverware so we had to wait ~6 minutes to actually see our waitress again and ask for our silverware. I got the cookie skillet and so did my friend. Both of our skillets were grossly over salted. It reminded us of pretzels. Given, they did remove them from our bill but it left a foul note on our palates. Just a very disappointing visit.
Went for dessert and drinks after the Lady Gaga concert. Figured it was the perfect time to go as there were tons of people getting on the T to go home and it was a nice walk to get there from Fenway Park. Banana chocolate crepe was delicious! Wasn't too busy and drinks were good too.
Came here twice.
The first time, I came in for dessert at about 10 PM. Ordered a pretty standard menu item and took over 30 minutes (this was by the bar).
The second time (thinking it was a fluke the first time) came with friends for dinner around 8 PM (had a reservation). Waited for 1.5 hours from the time ordered for dinner to be served.
This review is for dessert menu only. SO many other great dessert choices in this area, skip this place and go anywhere else instead. Brenner is WAY overpriced due to the VERY small portion sizes. Fondue was a joke, barely any chocolate to dip the few pieces of fruit they provide. The milkshake was super small as well. Highly disappointed.
First.... if you want to have a conversation with whoever you are with, do not come here. The music that they play is far too loud. Second, this place is meant for teenagers looking for dessert to eat. Not for people looking for an actual meal. No one I saw working there was older than 18. The place was full of kids and teenagers and just loud. They have a bar, which was also just very loud. I went to their location in NYC years ago and liked it, but this is not a place that I would bother to waste my time or money on again at any location after this experience.
The reception area failed to check my party in under Open table, even after I went back twice, with the email notice from Open Table that I had not shown up.( I was still sitting at the table eating). It took so much effort to get the situation fixed. Two days of emails and phone calls. the server Nick was very kind, helpful, and pleasant. He was the one bright star of the visit. I have been to Max Brenner many times, not just the one in Boston, other than Nick, the visit was not great. We ordered dinner and chocolate treats. The dinner was lack luster, tasteless veggie burger, dry tasteless quinoa salad. The food took soooooo long to arrive. We arrived at 4:45pm for dinner and ate at 6pm. It was not that crowded. The table next to us was so upset, they were late for an event due to the long wait. Th chocolate pizza was good.
All in all the only effort of good service and hard work was Nick the server. I will return to the other Max Brenner, and try to avoid this one.
I've been wanting to come here for years and finally found a reason to when it was added on the DINE OUT BOSTON list. I hate going into town because of the traffic and parking, but I figured it would be worth the trouble since we'll be getting a deal on the food. I was wrong. After being seated and some miscommunication about menus.. we found out that it was a mistake that MAX BRENNER was on the list in DINE OUT BOSTON??? I'm not sure how it was a mistake because there was a dine out lunch menu on the website... fine. We ended up paying full price for everything and it was only OK. Spinach Artichoke Dip was kind of watery and they gave a lot more chips than there was dip. The mac and cheese burger seemed to lack the wow factor that I was hoping for. The only item I liked was the dark dark dark chocolate dessert. I will not be going back.
Good meal, as usual. Definitely comfort food. However, we were disappointed because we went in with the expectation that they were participating in Boston Restaurant Week (they were on the official website with a special menu attached), and they told us they were not offering it. ):
Came here to celebrate a birthday last year and was not impressed, figured brunch may be better so my son and I gave it a second chance...wrong. The hollandaise sauce on the eggs benedict tasted like mayonnaise, my sons neapolitan french toast was soggy and the fresh strawberry garnish was a frozen strawberry that was defrosted. The hot chocolate was the only good part of the meal. Mediocre and over priced, definelitely won't be going back again.
Had a reservation. It was busy, but not overly crowded @ 6pm. Tables are a lot of 2 and 4 tops, with some area to put together tables for a larger group. We were seated at a small 2 top. cozy.
Ordered the chicken satay as an app. It was very good. Only comment is that side sauces were over portioned for the amount of already sauced chicken. For entrees had the bacon and tomato mac and cheese, and a waffle Cubano. Split with my wife. Both were excellent. Prices were moderate for Boston for entrees. We didn't get desert, although there were many tempting choices. Would like to go back and try some other items..
We went thinking we were going to Boston's Restaurant Week and booked at Max Brenners through the Boston Dine Out website, which had the Open Table link conveniently there. However, when we got there, they said they weren't participating in Boston Dine Out that night, even though the dates on the Boston Dine Out website said through 8/19 (and it was 8/19). They also told us to not book through Open Table anymore and to call them in the future. We decided to stay since we were already seated and felt that the food was mediocre - the value wasn't there. The food was very expensive but the service and ambiance didn't match that of other similar-prices restaurants. We would go back, but only for desert in the future.
We went to Max Brenner's in Boston on 8/13/16 for lunch. It was quite an unique experience and one that we thoroughly enjoyed. From the food (esp dessert!), waiter, to overall ambience, we could not have asked for a better day. Would highly recommend to anyone!
I was not happy with the service that was provided I came before twice and I had high quality service . The person that helped us was rude wasn't smiling and when we paid we asked him to pack what's remaining and he came back and slammed it on the table didn't even say have good day or anything and just walked away with an attitude . I will never come back again because that was really bad experience for my parents being their their first time
