Max Brenner - Boston Ratings and Reviews
Service was pretty good. The food was alright. We ordered the onion rings for an app and they came out cold and the waiter wasn't back till the food came out 25-30 min later. Dinner was delicious for both myself and my girlfriend. Desert was a bit disappointing, we had the churro fondue, which for $12 should come with more than 6 small churros which were quite tasteless. All in all, great place for dinner and drinks. Take desert somewhere else.
We waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive, and the order was wrong. My salad arrived without chicken. When the chicken was brought 20 minutes later, it was microwaved, grey, and slightly funky smelling. We did not even order dessert because we were honestly told it would take at least 20 minutes. We ordered pizza and burgers off the kids menu for our children. The pizza was worse than frozen pizza, and the burgers were lackluster. For $9 each, I expected better. The shakshouka tasted like the eggs were poached in Italian pasta sauce rather than in a spicy Mediterranean stew of tomatoes and peppers. This was a very disappointing experience!
Brought a friend here on a Sunday morning for brunch. So many places had a two hour wait so we were both pleasantly surprised but also questioning as to why there wasn't a long wait for this restaurant in the bustling Back Bay area. I made a reservation but there were many tables available at 11:00am. We looked at the menu ahead of time and it had options we both liked. Neither of us had heard of the restaurant before so we had no idea it was a chocolate-esque restaurant. I'm not a huge chocolate fan but there were still loads of options! I had the biscuits and gravy with a mushroom/sausage gravy. I preferred scrambled eggs that day so they were served on top. They also came with diced potatoes which were very good! My friend ordered the breakfast scrambler and ate the whole thing. No complaints. My 3 stars is mainly rating value, I thought all of it was a bit expensive for what you got. Especially the breakfast cocktails. $13 for one champagne glass of mimosa, nothing special about it? No thanks. Also, our service was truly just fair. She at times seemed like she was avoiding us, it took quite a while for our two dishes to come out, and while she didn't seem very busy with a ton of tables, she just wasn't very friendly or seemed excited about work at all. We said it was our first time here but she didn't go into any schpeel about the menu options or anything to tell us more. Just gave us more time to look. I was very disappointed because this was the last meal my friend would be having during her visit. I'll be choosing another restaurant next time I'm in the area for sure.
Delicious brunch on a Sunday morning. One of our party allergic to chocolate and had many options to choose from. Another member a vegetarian, same experience. Chocolate lovers in heaven. Each of us modified the standard order on the menu, and each came out just as requested.
For two customers should not be assigned to seat next to a big group of people like what happened to me and my friend. And I was celebrating my bday then. A little noisy. We were assigned to seat near the entrance first which was not a good one, so I asked for a different seat & was given next to a big group.
We went there for brunch. The service was unbelievably slow, even though it was not crowded. It took over 45 min for crepes and 2 of the 4 orders were prepared wrong and they had to remake them. I also received a phone call while we were in the restaurant asking if we would be arriving for our reservation we made through open table. The food was fair when we finally got it. There are too many options in Boston to go back.
We dined in the Back Bay area location with friends. We travelled to Boston from Philadelphia for a fun weekend. It was easy to make a Sunday brunch reservation online and we were very happy with the food and service. It was a yummy and enjoyable time. My omelette was fantastic and the home fries were browned and delicious. They were nice accompaniments to my bloody Mary! The hot chocolate my friend had made her very happy!
Perfect place for a middle school birthday party. Other than that, I wouldn’t go back.
Loud, SLOW service, unfriendly hostess We waited 30 minutes past our reservation time for a party of 4. Ugh.
Food was good but not good enough for me to go back considering all the other issues.
Took my two daughters, two of their friends, and my parents here for Northeastern's family weekend. Even though we had a group of 7 and showed up early to our reservation, we were welcomed and seated almost immediately. Food was great, atmosphere was a blast, and we had a great time. Special thanks to Jane for helping me arrange a reservation that worked with our schedule and our group size. We'll be back!!
My first sign should have been that this place was nearly empty for Sunday brunch. The service was extremely slow and absolutely terrible. It was as though none of the staff was trained in working at a restaurant. I could have forgiven the terrible service if the food was at least decent but unfortunately, that was not the case either.
Dinner service was running severely behind the dessert service. For about half an hour to 45 minutes no food came out for any of the tables. We had to order dessert before we got our entrees to make sure they would come in time.
If you want to visit, definitely come on a weekend for a better, and quieter, experience.
Had a teenager's birthday dinner there and it was a perfect spot to celebrate. Note, my teen did not want to have my husband and I sit near the kids so we had 2 tables, and the same waiter was assigned to us both tables. We finished early and so hung out at the bar and the waiter came by to alert us when they were doing the birthday part so that I could go over and take photos.
It is not a super large place so reservations are highly recommended, but it is cozy and fun and I would recommend for a fun night out as it's got a great energy and the staff was excellent.
It was only OK. I was expecting more so perhaps my bar was too high. I was expecting something truly memorable and different and in the end, it under-delivered. We went for dessert for my daughter's birthday. The food was good, but nothing exceptional. The waffles were a big disappointment. I would rather get waffles from the Waffle Cabin at ski mountains... they are much better than what we got. Milkshakes have cute presentation but disappointing flavors. Was disappointed all around. Bummer.
My Boston-area college kids like this place and recommended it for Sunday brunch. Finding street parking was impossible so we used the garage at the Pru ($30). Basic brunch entrees like eggs run $15-20 but are pretty similar in quality to Denny's. Cherries on my Eggo-like waffles appeared to be same as canned ones used in pie filling. Too too pricey for a meh meal. Unlike the experience of other reviewers our server was helpful and diligent and the noise level was low. However, as others have noted, the restaurant did not indicate to OpenTable that we had honored our reservation so we were dinged as no-shows.
We arrived on time for our reservation. We were sat promptly. A server came and took our drink and app order and informed us that our server would be right over. About 10 minutes later two server came, we still did not have our drinks. One of the servers let us know the other server standing behind him would be taking care of us and that our food and drinks would be right out. I told them we had not ordered our food yet.
After waiting another 10 minutes I flagged down our server and asked about our drinks and could we please order our food. He apologized and said he thought we had already ordered. After nearly 30 minutes our drink finally arrived with our app. Both drinks were awful, tasting like straight sticky sweet fruity syrup. We asked for new drinks as well as silverware A gin and tonic and a vodka soda. After waiting another 10 minutes our drinks arrived, we got a vodka and sprite abs a gin and cranberry. The server asked if we wanted them sent back but we declined as we had already waited so long. Our food arrived by way of another server who merely stood at the table holding our food and staring at us. We took our plates from him.
Our server returned, I asked for napkins and water. We finished our meal with out another sighting of our server and no napkins or water I went to the hostess stand to ask them for napkins.
I've been in the industry for years as a FOH Manager and server/bartender for decades. I was amazed at the lack of professionalism and service.
Our food had to be sent back, even though I reaaally hate doing that, but both were cold and unappetizing. Our desserts were half-prepared, almost as if in a rush. We've visited a few times in the past, a couple times it was very busy, but this time was nearly empty. The manager was apologetic, said the server was new and would speak to him about checking the food before serving. We didn't think that was necessary to know but I think he was just flustered and was trying to help. All in all they really are known for chocolate, so forget the food and hit them up for dessert.
