Max Brenner - Boston Ratings and Reviews
I love Max Brenner but I probably won't go back. I was disappointed with my experience there on Sunday night. It was a holiday weekend and we had a 9:45pm reservation, and the place was still very crowded when we got there. As always the food was delicious and I got what I expected.
For the uninitiated, Max Brenner is a marquee restaurant located on one of the most popular shopping and dining blocks in the city of Boston. It is not located in some out of the way suburb where the venue may or may not have customers until closing.
So. The coffee/ tea scene. I worked as a server for many years, and in all that time I had only a handful of tables NOT order coffee or an after dinner drink. So, when I ordered coffee at 10:45, I was surprised to hear that coffee was "eighty sixed." (Keep in mind that the bar was very much still open and busy.) When you have a busy restaurant that is open and serving until 11pm, coffee should not be "eighty sixed" at 10:30pm. "Eighty six" means you're out.
Restaurants don't run out of coffee, but servers run out of wanting to be at work.
There was also no tea available, so I settled for a glass of warm water. I know that having a late table can be the last thing you want at the end of a long shift- and had we been the only table in there, I would be a lot more understanding. But if you're a server at a busy restaurant on Boylston Street on a holiday weekend, you should expect to work and not try to clear out your entire section all at once.
Just disappointed that we waited 20 minutes for the entree only to be told at the last minute that there were out of eggs and could not do the sunny side up eggs my wife had ordered. They didn't know that until the rest of the order came out? Waiter was nice and they took item off the bill but I can't recommend.
This was my second time at Max Brenner because I did enjoy the food the first time I went. However, this time, I made a reservation for 5 but was led to a small space meant for 4. We were all adults so the space was way too crowded for us. On top of that, we were led to our table by a rude waitress. The utensils and plates we were given were all dirty. Sadly, I would most likely not return again.
Food was good but I had reservations and had gotten originally sat in seat that weren’t even really in the restaurant. Hostess were giving people without reservations better seats. The hostesses didn’t really appear to know what they were doing. We had to ask to move because we were sitting next to the elevator for wheelchairs.
The bartender was busy even on a Tuesday so drinks took a while. Server was fine but nothing special. The fondue itself was tasty, but the dipping options were lacking - flavorless/mushy strawberries, boring grocery store cookies, and bananas. Nothing special and I would have preferred to make it myself at home with better quality ingredients.
The seating is cramped. The tables are small. The lady that sat behind me kept pushing her chair into mine. Therefore, I was squished up against the table I was sitting at. She asked me to move in more and I could not. Other than that issue, drinks are really good and food is comforting. The waitress was very alert and friendly.
We came for the desserts but were really impressed by the food. The burgers were terrific and the right size to fill you up but still have room for dessert.
Kids loved the creative Mac and Cheese delivery and the sharable dessert.
Adults enjoyed the chocolate pizza and Smores Sundae.
Look forward to coming back.
The food was very good and My wife and I loved everything that we did eat. However the service was terrible. We were given water when we sat down and order two drinks. Our meal came and we were able to eat our entire meal before even getting our drinks. Along with that when our meal did come we were not given napkins or silverware and had to physical get up out of the chair to request these basic items. One of the worst service I have ever had
Not sure what all the hype is about. Food was fair. Our one dessert was not very good. The two shakes were fine, nothing special and @ $8 per not any better than Friendlys. The food was what you would expect from a "gimmick" type restaurant. It was good, not great which is fine for a "dessert" place but when the desserts fall short it makes the experience not worth it. The service was very good though.
Nice place, would go again. However, I’d prefer seating in the heart of the restaurant rather in the periphery at the front that was cold from being along the windows and drafts every time the door was open. Not sure why we were seated there when there were many seats in the rest of the place. Menu needs new printing. It was soiled, stained, frayed, tattered, sticky. I had to wash my hands after touching it. Makes one wonder on the cleanliness of other aspects of the place. Food itself was fine. Great chocolate martini! Very pleasant waitress but had to wait a bit for her, possibly understaffed as she seemed to be running around.
Service was very good, our waitress was great. Only problem we had was the size of the place, it was extremely cramped. We where a party of five with reservations and they tried to stick us at a four top between two other parties of four. Eventually they ended up putting us at a bigger table which was good. Food was fun and creative. Overall good visit.
Clustered seating, narrow dinner menu, and poor service. Wasn't that impressed and didn't see what al the hype was about, Wait staff could be improved she didn't come around nearly ever but we did get to move our table because the seating area was so clustered I felt as if I was on top of the person behind me. I went with high expectations and left displeased. I got the classic Mac & Cheese I had better, I tried the hazelnut milkshake in the Signature Alice Cup, I like d the cup rather than the drink the flavor was hidden but it was good, nothing to brag about though. As well as the Melting Chocolate Truffle Heart Cake & Shake although pleasing to the eye was very small and there was a little ice cram I mean the size of a quarter when they shake that's what it was. Dominos lava cake is just as good.
Don’t go here.
We went here to give our toddlers a choclate experience. I wasn’t expecting 5 star food or service. But even for 1 star place this experience was a disappointment. We were seated 15 mins late for our reservation. we already knew what we were going to order so we did so immediately upon arrival and the food took 35 mins to arrive (which is a long time for small children to wait). They didn’t even bring the drinks over for 35 mins. The choclate milkshake was a watery icy version of chocolate milk. The food (veggie burger) had a slimy texture, my sons pasta was warm but the sauce was cold. The chocolate dessert was loaded w gobbs of whipped cream, you couldn’t see what was under it. And the worst thing was what they call the ultimate choclate dessert (something they should have mastered given their trademark is choclate) was undercooked and grainy.
I never write reviews to give people the benefit of the doubt, but this one experience made it necessary.
EXTREMELY DISSAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE.
Our server was wonderful and patient. The overall expeirence there is always great; great food, great atmosphere, a great place to be! A great date spot or to meet up with friends! You can’t go there without having something chocolatey. I would recommend this spot to everyone! You’ll always have a great expeirence.
They also offer chocolates you can buy at the front of the restaurant which is super cute!
I’ve gone to this restaurant twice in the last two weeks. The food was fine both times, not outstanding, but average/decent. The restaurant set up is awkward and cramped. Some of the tables are in a back dark hallway looking area. What I was surprised with both times was the poor service. Perhaps the servers have too many tables? I found myself cleaning up the table both times and waiting and waiting for the server to come over so I could tell them that I want to order dessert. Neither time was dessert offered to me....very strange to me in a chocolate restaurant. Both visits when I asked for something that was missing from the meals, it took a loooooong time and multiple people to get it....ketchup, a spoon, a straw... and I saw this happen to other parties too. This is a fun restaurant with delicious hot chocolate and desserts so I would recommend going to this restaurant, just plan on spending a long time at the restaurant.
We were seated by the window and it was drafty as hell as those are retractable windows in the warm weather. Fridgid weather outside didn't help. They were packed, so moving 6 of us elsewhere wasn't an option. But the worst was changing a toddler in the subzero temperature in the bathroom. Really need to work on insulation there.
Food was great although we had a ridiculously long wait for just 3 desert items. Luckily kids were patient enough since we got them some food items from the kids menu prior to desert.
My first experience with Max Brenner was in NYC over ten years ago....it seems things have gone a little downhill since. The vibe inside is very Bennigans like. The willy wonkaish of the fixtures is a little stale now. There are a lot of children, and the things that go along with children. The service was very slow for a restaurant that was maybe half full, i wathed as a dirty table sat for about 20 minutes before someone started to clean it...food took about 30 minutes from time it was ordered..., they also appeared to have a heating issue in the kitchen as the melted butter came out solid, and the toast on my sandwich was stone cold. The churros leave much to be desired, more like a stale chewy pretzel, and not nearly enough to cosume the three dipping sauces, there were six churros and enough sauce for at least six more. The cocktails were delicious, but the ambience rated a seven dollar drink, not 13. Maybe my first experience when the NYC location was new left me with an overly nostalgic expectation...I don't think I will be able to convince my wife to return.
Overall our visit was fair. We went for brunch at 10:30 on New Year's day. We were told that brunch menu was closing soon and they were out of a few menu items. Brunch is typically served until 3:00 on Saturday and Sunday and I was surprised they didn't have some hours on New Year's day. Restaurant was not busy at all which was a surprise. The service was actually very poor. The food was fine. I would stick to desserts. With so many great options to choose from in the area I expected significantly better food and much better service.
Went with my daughter for NYE supper. Seated immediately, our server was awesome but maybe staff had too many tables. Food mediocre, my burger came out more cool than hot. My daughter had Mac&cheese which was very hot. The fondue plate was okay. I did like the crapes and hot chocolate. All in all, the staff were better than the food.
The milkshakes, pancakes and waffles were fine, but my eggs were not hot and they were dry as though they were made too soon and sat and waited for the rest of the food to be ready.
The fondue sauces were good, but the cakes to dip were not good. Also, there was very little to dip into the fondue. Just a few marshmallows, very little fruit and other stuff. I thought the amount of items to dip was stingy. Could have been so much better. We have had better elsewhere. Also, the chocolate chip cookie in the skillet was hard and overcooked. The flavor was lousy as well. Very disappointed.
We thought this would be a treat for the kids to go to Max Brenner in Boston over vacation, but the food quality and desserts were highly disappointing. We will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Not sure it will survive with the poor attention to food. The diner by our home is a thousand times better..
I took a group of 13 year old girls who had a summer camp reunion. It was the perfect atmosphere, dinner options were casual and suitable for different tastes and the desserts were amazing! Get the Fondue (classic) and dessert pizza . Super fun atmosphere and our waitress was excellent.
we had horrible service, we had asked to order dessert and the waiter just said "yeah" and walked away and came back around 15 minutes later asking if we needed anything. So we got to order our dessert but we waited for 45 mins when our waiter came back asking if we needed anything and we reminded him about out dessert and then they all of a sudden come out. BUT they came out cold...melted chocolate with one of the desserts wouldn't come out of the container because it had cooled. the cookies skillet was as cold as the ice cream on top. We know it was the waiters problem because we watched him flirt and follow the hostess around like a little puppy dog. It was very disappointing because it was our first time being there and had expected more. Most likely will not be going back.
