Everything we had was nicely spiced since we asked for medium spiced. Lucky was our waitress and she was very attentive. The restaurant is under new management and the decor is very nicely done (one of our pet peeves with Indian restaurants). We will surely return.
Lamb was not tender and for the price you should expect something better.
We love to eat Indian food and were looking forward to trying a new place. We went on Mother's Day and it was pretty empty when we went. We had a reservation and were seated right away but after that, the service was very slow. The staff looked very young and I wasn't sure if anyone was in charge. We waited quite a while for our food. There was a large party who came in after us and their food came before ours. We asked for medium heat and we thought we could have gone hotter. Mostly, we thought there was no depth of flavor. The Aloo Gobi seemed like the cauliflower and potatoes were boiled too long and thrown in the sauce. There was very little meat in the Chicken Tikka. It wasn't terrible, but we will probably won't go back.
Great Food! I love Indian Food and this place made for the perfect date night!
They do not have any alcoholic drinks. Food was excellent. The waiter helped me pick a vegan dish. Waiters were not very attentive but were really nice. Ordering was slow.
Food was delicious, and the prices are very reasonable.
Our waiter was friendly and quick with our food. The food was very good. The lamb was tender in my Vindaloo and in my husband's dish. The naan bread wasn't anything special; there wasn't much flavor. The portions were adequate.
Food was ok, expensive for the small portion size. Waitperson really didn't listen to us.
The calimari appetizer was tasty and well-prepared. The chicken tikka-masala, which the waiter said was a speciality, was tasteless. My date's chicken in black pepper sauce was dry.
The service was pleasant, but extremely slow. Our friends ordered tea and timed it at 20 minutes to arrive. There are vasatly better Indian restaurants around here. I would definitely not return to this one.
My family of 4 came for dinner on a Saturday around 7.30pm. The restaurant was not at all full -- there were maybe 3 or 4 other tables with people. But we waited 30 minutes for a waiter to take our order. The food took another 20 minutes. And it came out randomly, first the curries but no bread, pickle or raita. We waited another 10 minutes for them; the waiter told us, rather brusquely, that we should "wait just a minute." We were in there for almost 2 hours!
On the plus side, the food was pretty good. And the bus boy was very energetic about filling up our water glasses. The only reason we tipped at all was because we didn't want to stiff him!
My recommendation: get takeout.
Been there for lunch with my coworkers (12 in total). The buffet was really good and inexpensive. Food was not too spicy which I really appreciated it. Naan was served upon request (plain and garlic) and it was delicious.
Staff seemed over-worked even though the place was not crowded. We asked them to open our wine and the bottle disappeared into the kitchen for too long. We waited a long time for our food. Our main chicken tandoori entree arrived with our appetizer. Food was ok but it was a weird evening.
Waitstafff had little interest in helping us. Waitress didn't even know if they had iced tea then told us we would be charged for each refill after we finished our first (only partially filled) glass of tea. They were out of one of their 'signature' items but didn't tell us that until 10 minutes after we ordered it. Had to wait a long time for the check. And even though they did not close for another 10 minutes they turned up the lights and started cleaning the front of the restaurant
Food was good but I do not plan to go back and recommend you go somewhere else, unless you like sitting around doing nothing while waiting for your food.
Excellent meal. Probably best Indian restaurant in Montclair in our opinion.
We've eaten here four times, and each time was a little worse....when the owner is there, the staff is pretty sharp. When he's not, the clowns are running the circus. The quality of food is pretty good, better than the other Indian restaurant next door to it and much better than the now dreadful Satish Palace. The place is usually empty or near empty, especially if you eat later. ( 9pm) If you're still there past 9:30 pm, then expect the staff to bring out the slop bucket and start mopping to encourage you to finish your meal. There are the ingredients of a good restaurant there, but they don't seem to make the effort. If you want Indian food, try Brick Lane Curry House on Valley Rd.
The food is just delicious. Not easy finding good Indian places to eat. Service is impeccable. I do a lot of take out from here or just pop in quickly and it's always clean with great tasting food. My go to items are the palak paneer, butter chicken, and garlic naan. They have never disappointed me.
This was the second time I had been to Mausam in Montclair but the first was a couple of years ago. Glad to find out it had not changed. Went there after seeing a movie. My friend and I tried the Gobi 65 appetizer - one of their specialties - and it was terrific. We consider that a must try. We then shared Dal Tadka and Lamb Mughlai, accompanied by Garlic Naan. All the food was excellent and portions were more than adequate. When we arrived (7pm on a Sunday eve) there was only one other table occupied, so it was very quiet. More people arrived as we ate. The waiter (who seemed to be the only one on duty) was attentive and very helpful when it came to ordering. He even brought an extra order of rice for me to enjoy with the rest of the food in my doggy bag. Service was quick enough for us to thoroughly enjoy our food and have enough time to put my friend on the 9pm train back to NYC. Our waiter even gave us helpful directions to the train. We'll be back!
I went to the Billy Idol concert across the street from the restaurant which was very convenient. They were able to seat us right away even though we were late for our reservation due to traffic. The waiter was able to get our food to us within the time alloted and even suggested a good place to buy a bottle of wine. The Chicken Tikka Masala was delicious and very fresh. I would reccomend this restaurant to my friends.
Food was great. Love the bench seating. Waiter made great recommendations on pairing food and how spicy to make it. We'll be back.
Food was excellent. I did not like the dark dull decor. I would have preferred some gilded accessories in gold or silver tones glistening on the stark black walls. Thankfully, the menu at Mausam offers choices beyond the scope of the prescribed menus of most Indian restaurants in our area, but they also have have dishes to please diners who expect traditional dishes. The waiter struggled with the restaurant's brand new ipad order system, but once he switched to an old-fashioned paperpad, everything went smoothly and all the orders in our large party of 9 people came out perfectly!
I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh and inviting, and every dish was tasteful and well prepared. I will most certainly return.
Amazing Indian food. This is the restaurant that converted my girlfriend and I to Indian food. The food and sauces at Mausam are quite unique and flavorful. They also have a very extensive menu. My favorites are the Malai Kabab, chicken Tika masala, chicken marango and chicken 65. I love the naan bread too. We go very often and would note that the chef/owner and entire staff are extremely pleasant, they really make you feel at home and are very attentive, very friendly and welcoming. Also, the decor inside is very nice as well and we like the overall ambiance, I would maybe just dim the lights a touch as it could also be a very romantic restaurant. The food is fresh and delicious. The chef really put his heart into the restaurant. 5 stars.
We introduced my parents to Indian food here. Those of us who've loved Indian food for years and those who never had it before all loved their meals, sampling many dishes. Great service.
The host/server seemed disinterested from the moment we walked in. Food was okay but nothing to write home about. Won't be back.
Bottom line you must try this Indian restaurant! We had a large party and they didn't miss a beat! From the greeting to the exit staff was very kind & attentitive and food was excellent!!
I love very spicy food, and this is honestly the first Indian restaurant where I met my match. They told me that the spice level of my dish was 11 on a scale of 10 (I told them I like very spicy food); next time I'll order just plain old spicy. Otherwise we really enjoyed the meal and the service was very attentive.
Went here with another couple. Food was very good. Ambiance was nice. I hade the Malai kofta which i always get...so good.Just the right heat. Aloo paratha was a little greasy but still good. Naaan was yummy. Would go back.
Two friends looking for a great Indian restaurant in Montclair and we found a perfect spot. Food was delicious, service was good and environment was conducive for conversation. We asked our server for recommendations for appetizers and she picked two terrific ones. Server was friendly and attentive but not overbearing. We'll be back!
We returned for our second visit and were very pleased. Excellent food!
We had a lovely dinner and tried numerous dishes including lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka from the tandoori. The decor is warm and modern and the owner, Sam, is a terrific host. We will continue to both dine in and bring in as it's become a favorite.
Our experience at Mausam was excellent. The food was delicious, the servers were friendly and knowledgable and the pace of the meal was perfect. We will definitely return often. Great restaurant!
The place is very clean, nice atmosphere, not cluttered. We hit some traffic, called & they were nice enough to hold a table for us on a Saturday night. The entrees were prepared very well, tasted great & we even had some leftovers to take home. The restaurant has garlic chili naan which was excellent. You can tell they take pride in their food.
I met a friend for dinner here on a Saturday night. The food was really very good from garlic naan to Chicken Curry and Navratan Korma. I really enjoyed the meal, which we shared and the serving bowls went back empty. I would be happy to eat at Mausam again. Not fancy but fine.
The food was good, well prepared, ample portions, nicely spiced and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is pleasant and the service good.
Went here after a day of hiking was extremely hungry and it was worth the visit. Food was well prepared and presented. Definitely will go back for a night out with friends.
Having been to the sister restaurant in Secaucus, we went with some Montclair friends to the one in their town. The food is authentic and delicious. Spicing is more moderate than the Secaucus location, which tends to have a more Indian clientele. Other than a bit of heat, nothing else is diminished in Montclair. The service is warm and friendly. All dishes are explained and preferences are explored. We were given a "comped' entree due to the kitchen being out of the dish that was originally ordered. It's BYOB, by the way. GIve it a try!!
Finally a first class Indian restaurant managed by professional restaurant people for Montclair which has long lacked such a place. The ambience is pleasing, the young wait staff inexperienced but hustling and enthusiastic, anxious to please and the food nicely prepared and served albeit perhaps too spicey for the average American palate. A wonderful addition to the Montclair dining scene which should be on everyone's list of choices.
