Maude's Liquor Bar Ratings and Reviews
The food at Maude's was delicious, as usual--especially the steak.
However, disappointingly, on this occasion the service was atrocious. Our server took a long time to approach our table. There was a significant wait (on a not-very-busy Sunday night) between courses, made worse by dirty dishes sitting on the table. At the end of the meal, we waited a long time for the bill after asking for it. Despite us being done with our entrees before the bill was delivered, those dishes were never cleared--we actually left the restaurant with dirty dishes on the table. All of this was made worse by us being able to watch our server spend most of his time standing at the bar talking with the bartender, his back to the dining room and his guests.
Furthermore, the fact that we were celebrating a special occasion (an anniversary) was noted in the reservation. No one said anything about it.
Ambience and food were excellent! Service left a lot to be desired. Our waitress gave us a lot of attitude throughout the night, we had to ask for water several times, she would bring it and then wouldn’t even pour it. We also had to wait 20 minutes to order dessert while she rolled silverware and she brought us our check without asking us if we would like another drink, which we did.
I liked this place the first time I went but after this experience for the amount we paid for dinner, I won’t be going back again.
Expected a typical Bistro food, with staples and flavors that are pretty commonly known. Yet, surprisingly every dish had a twist and was interesting without losing the soul of classical bistro food. It hit the spot! The steak for instance, full of flavor enhancing the meat flavor by using their preparation technique, and not just grilling the meat. Nicely done!
Maude's Liquor Bar is within walking distance for us, and it has become a real favorite among so many great restaurants on Randolph Street. Consistently wonderful food, very large portions are nice for sharing, and the bar selections are excellent -- with some flavors that you don't ordinarily find. The only drawback for us is that it is very noisy -- something, alas, we've come to expect in restaurants. But the positives greatly outweigh that one negative! Worth a visit:-)
I love the vibe in Maude’s - it’s beautiful, the food is delicious, and there’s always great mix of people eating there. The pomme frites with garlic aioli are so amazing, but so are the brussels, steak tartare, salmon, shaved vegetable salad, and the cocktails. I had both a St. Germain fizz and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc - all good. If I have one complaint, it’s that the bartenders aren’t the warmest of folks, and they were discussing the apparent challenge of attracting customers while I sat there.
Food was great. Drinks were great. Been there many times, but perhaps this last visit they were understaffed big time. Took a very long time to get the food, drinks, and even the water. A bit annoying at times, but having been there before I got over it after a few drinks.
We really liked the décor, menu and service. The downstairs is very dark so we had to use our phones to read menu. A bigger candle on the table? The only real negative was that the music was so loud that people were shouting to be heard which made the room even louder. We heard the conversation from the tables around us whether we wanted to or not. They need to find a better balance for the noise level. You want music that sets the mood and masks the conversation but not so loud that the waiter has to yell and lean in closely to be heard. Not a very relaxing vibe.
Celebrated our Anniversary here. We started with a round of cocktails and ordered a nice bottle of Bordeaux. I had the rum smash - which I wouldn't order again as it had a heavy medicinal taste. My wife had an M. Laurent, which she enjoyed. We started with the steak tartar and escargot. The tartar was tasty, but could have used a little spice. The escargot was excellent - slightly different from a traditional recipe as it had a notable citrus finish, but it was a nice twist. For our main courses we had the mussels and French onion fondue. The broth for the mussels was heavy on onions, but the mussels were plump and delicious. I would describe the fondue as French onion soup with extra cheese and less broth. It was unique and the flavor was great. Everything came with warm bread and the portion sizes were just the right for a large appetizer or smaller meal. We finished with the creme brulee which came in a wide shallow dish, so there is a lot of crust in proportion to the custard. They don't have espresso, which was a bit of a surprise. The ambiance is unique and reminds me of something that would belong in a Hemingway novel.
Great ambiance and cocktails but they managed to lose my credit card (yet still were able to bring me a bill).
Maybe an accident but one that disrupts the crucial trust aspect of paying for a meal (i.e. giving a stranger your credit card in good faith because you know it will be returned.)
In my 27 years of dining, I’ve never had this happen.
We’ve been here twice now and to most of the hog salt restaurants many times. We were excited to find out that Maude’s offered the share a glass instead of corkage fee, similar to what we have done at Bavette’s. However, we were disappointed that our waiter proceeded to pour the full bottle out 5 ways evenly (in fact the glass we shared was more full than one or two of the glasses we kept). In essence we gave away over 20% of our bottle. We were never told who it was given to. Had we known we would have had such a large portion of our nice bottle given awY, we would have just opted to pay the corkage fee. In the past, it was always a smaller pour shared. We still enjoy Maude’s and will done there again but will likely forgo any type of wine experience.
When I looked at the menu online I knew I had to go. All my favorite French foods were there. Claude’s was outstanding! My husband and I shared the cheese and onion fondue, the fois gras pate with cherry jam, salmon tartare and loved it all. The service was great! The place is very romantic.
We've been meaning to go to Maude's Liquor Bar for quite some time and now wish we would've done it sooner. Maude's is a solid choice if you're looking for good food/drink, great service, and an atmosphere that is intimate yet energetic. I would've given a 5/5, but we did find a hair in the salmon tartare - which was unfortunate bc it was delicious! The waiter immediately made the chef aware and the issue was more than taken care of. Overall, it was a great meal and we'll
Great all-around experience. Our server, Brad was very attentive! Every dish was great. Our Maude’s ribeye was a perfect medium rare and had great flavors before the salt or bernaise. The maitake gnocchi was a perfect compliment to the steak, and the chicken liver mousse a great texture plus the escargot was wonderful with a squeeze of lemon to start. I will definitely be back to Maude’s for the onion fondue and will definitely be ordering the steak again.
Excellent in every regard. Best meal I've enjoyed in recent memory and my new favorite French restaurant in the city. I highly recommend the salmon tartare with crème frâiche - it's a revelation. The escargot was perfection along with the crusty warm baguette served with it. My companion who has traveled extensively, lived abroad for years and dined in France many times said the pomme frites were the best she's ever had (high praise). The ambiance is romantic with dim lighting and ornate chandeliers. Our server, Brad, was a doll and just the right amount of attentive. Hostesses were kind and all smiles and don't get me started on the mezcal negroni. ❤️
This was our second time and we lost be it!! The food is awesome and the atmosphere is great!! We love the bring your bottle and share a glass exchange for corkage fee! The food is fantastic!! Everything is great!! Love Ce the ending with the best mouse ever!! Definitely a great lace to be!!
