Matteo's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Matteo's is a comfortable restaurant with good ambiance and good service. The food is tasty and well prepared. Unfortunately, the seafood pasta I ordered was not as generous as it should have been on the seafood side. The menu said that the plate was supposed to have pasta and shrimp, scallops, mussels and clams. There were a lot of mussels and clams offering very little seafood but only one shrimp and half a scallop cut in two pieces. I order the same dish in other less costly restaurants and receive far more generous helpings of the seafood.
I've eaten here many times, and it's always been excellent. This time, however, when it came to the service, even though it started out really well, once our entrees were served it seemed our server was so focused on new arrivals at the other side of the restaurant, he completely forgot about our table. He even totally ignored our table 3 different times when he had to walk past us to go to the kitchen. It was several minutes after we finished our entrees (and they were cleared from the table) before we got dessert menus, and that happened only because I flagged down and asked one of the busboys to bring them to us. When our meal was finished, I had to ask THREE times before we got our check.
We had a business dinner, 3 people on a quiet Tuesday night. Not a busy night for restaurant but food was really well prepared and delicious. Veal Milanese excellent pounded veal served on the bone covered most of plate and hot. Perfect. Mozzarella appetizer also excellent and lucious. This is an iconic place with a lot of history that should not be forgotten. It may not buzz with activity but we liked the quiet, one gets lots of attention and an agreeable digestion here.
Some of the best Italian food you will have in the city of Los Angeles. Old-school is not a dirty word when it comes to this place, it's a fantastic meal with great service and great bar too. If bartender Joe Stellini is working, you won't find a better person to make your drinks and talk about life with then Joe.
Simply outstanding food as well.
Matteo's is my favorite restaurant, even though we live in the South Bay area and have an hour's commute to go there.
I always order the delicious Rack of lamb. It is of the best quality and prepared medium/rare, exactly the way I like it.
My husband usually orders one of the specials for that evening.
Not only is the food top quality and very tasty, but William, the manager always welcomes us with a smile and hug.
The barman is wonderful and prepares a bloody mary like no one else.
Mike, our server is polite and friendly without being obtrusive.
This is a wonderful restaurant for a date, a dinner or a special occasion.
My husband and I spend almost all of our monthly wedding anniversaries there
Business dinner for two at 7 pm on a Thursday. Very light crowd, surprisingly. Meat selection appetizer (large size) was generous (enough for 4 people easily). Fig salad (special) was delicious. My companion had a seafood medley entree and said it was very good. I ordered what I thought was a spaghetti dish with lamb meatballs, but it arrived sans the meatballs (which our server, Sebastian, remedied quickly). The pasta itself was unremarkable and the tomato sauce (even with roasted garlic) was rather bland. Wine and beer selection is limited but at least not over-priced (had a bottle of the Italian chianti classico). We did not have dessert. I enjoyed the throw-back ambiance as much as anything.
Always consistently good food.
Wine list could be broader. For instance, there's only have one chardonnay available to order (which I do enjoy). Gluten-free and vegan choices are very limited as well. I really like the service and atmosphere. Classy, Hollywood old school vibe, yet cozy and romantic.
Matteo's remains one of the last great classic LA restaurants. Dine with the ghosts of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin seated at a nearby table. Some of the most authentic Italian food anywhere in town. Excellent, friendly service, good prices, and a warm ambience.
Highly recommended. While trendy restaurants come and go, Matteo's happily endures.
Although the food is usually very good here, this time not so much. The Caesar salad was lacking in flavor but the romaine. was crisp. However, the veal chop with porcini mushroom sauce was so salty as to be barely edible. I love porcini mushrooms -- there was no taste of porcini mushrooms.
Desserts were wonderful, both the spumoni and the chocolata. rich and delicious.
Matteo's is a comfortable and sophisticated restaurant. Go, but skip the veal chop!
I love this place and have had many dinners here, some for special occasions. The staff, service, ambiance and good are exceptional. My only critique is my last visit, they didn't tell me the kitchen was closing and I wanted to put in an order to go and was unable to do so. Based on that, I was a little disappointed leaving but it was only because I wanted their food again the next day.
Waiter or kitchen got our order wrong but not the order of friends who were dining with us. We waited for our food to be prepared while our friends ate. Management only gave us a 10% card for our next visit as an adjustment for the experience. We are not going back.
We went there on the evening when UCLA was playing in March Madness. The service was very poor. We were brought the wrong wine twice, they forgot our bread and had to be asked several times for utensils. Perhaps this was a one time thing while the waiters watched the game.
The food was pretty good and the ambiance was great. We did bring the average age down, however, since there was mostly an older crowd in attendance. So if you want a quite restaurant with pretty good food, this might be for you.
