Business dinner for two at 7 pm on a Thursday. Very light crowd, surprisingly. Meat selection appetizer (large size) was generous (enough for 4 people easily). Fig salad (special) was delicious. My companion had a seafood medley entree and said it was very good. I ordered what I thought was a spaghetti dish with lamb meatballs, but it arrived sans the meatballs (which our server, Sebastian, remedied quickly). The pasta itself was unremarkable and the tomato sauce (even with roasted garlic) was rather bland. Wine and beer selection is limited but at least not over-priced (had a bottle of the Italian chianti classico). We did not have dessert. I enjoyed the throw-back ambiance as much as anything.

On November 11, 2017 the Veal Parmesan was very soggy with the breading and cheese separating from the veal.

A month ago, it was much better.

Maybe, I'll try it again in a month or so.

Food and service were average at best. Restaurant was half empty but still service was agonizingly slow. Spaghetti was drowning in sauce. Hardly authentic Italian on any level

Always consistently good food.
Wine list could be broader. For instance, there's only have one chardonnay available to order (which I do enjoy). Gluten-free and vegan choices are very limited as well. I really like the service and atmosphere. Classy, Hollywood old school vibe, yet cozy and romantic.

Matteo's remains one of the last great classic LA restaurants. Dine with the ghosts of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin seated at a nearby table. Some of the most authentic Italian food anywhere in town. Excellent, friendly service, good prices, and a warm ambience.
Highly recommended. While trendy restaurants come and go, Matteo's happily endures.

This place opened in 1963 and the food is still absolutely fantastic. I love the ambience of the old-school Italian restaurant and you're never gonna find a better bartender then Joe Stellini.

Matteo's is great for the geriatric crowd. We may have been almost the only people there without walkers. It was great back in the 70s but I think it's time to fade away gracefully.

It's been years since we've been to Mateo's (having formerly lived within walking distance), but it lived up to our recollections/expectations and then some. Terrific! Food, service, ambiance were all great. Highly recommended.

Although the food is usually very good here, this time not so much. The Caesar salad was lacking in flavor but the romaine. was crisp. However, the veal chop with porcini mushroom sauce was so salty as to be barely edible. I love porcini mushrooms -- there was no taste of porcini mushrooms.
Desserts were wonderful, both the spumoni and the chocolata. rich and delicious.
Matteo's is a comfortable and sophisticated restaurant. Go, but skip the veal chop!

I love this place and have had many dinners here, some for special occasions. The staff, service, ambiance and good are exceptional. My only critique is my last visit, they didn't tell me the kitchen was closing and I wanted to put in an order to go and was unable to do so. Based on that, I was a little disappointed leaving but it was only because I wanted their food again the next day.

If you're looking for a classic old-school, leather bangquette Italian experience, then you can't really go wrong with Matteo's. Two people will easily spend $100, but the service is attentive, the food is delicious, and that atmosphere elegantly cozy.

Waiter or kitchen got our order wrong but not the order of friends who were dining with us. We waited for our food to be prepared while our friends ate. Management only gave us a 10% card for our next visit as an adjustment for the experience. We are not going back.

We went there on the evening when UCLA was playing in March Madness. The service was very poor. We were brought the wrong wine twice, they forgot our bread and had to be asked several times for utensils. Perhaps this was a one time thing while the waiters watched the game.
The food was pretty good and the ambiance was great. We did bring the average age down, however, since there was mostly an older crowd in attendance. So if you want a quite restaurant with pretty good food, this might be for you.

We loved going for the first time several months ago, now we just made a return visit ahead of Valentine's Day and everything was delicious again (one of us did the special Valentine's menu and the other did the regular menu), so we plan on coming back again and again in the future!

The Valentine's special menu was excellent. The Filet Mignon was special. The room was a bit noisier than usual, but that was probably because it was a special menu that attracted a bigger crowd.

This restaurant has been around for decades. The food was good but we came late and it was very brightly
lit, such that I felt like they were getting ready to close up for the night. Leather banquets, if you're into that sort of old Hollywood scene.

I'm really glad we got a Blackboard Eats deal sometime last year that prompted us to enjoy our first visit to Matteo's. This is one of the true LA haunts still left. I remember being a kid and always hearing about the celebrities of day eating here. People like Frank Sinatra, who's table we sat at for New Years Eve, Lucille Ball, etc. I don't think the place has changed much since those days but that's fine with me. I am so tired of overpriced restaurants of the moment serving up small portions of "foodies" food. Give me a place like this with great food for reasonable prices, good service, a nice atmosphere and a gentrified yet mixed crowd, all out to enjoy the same experience. I took off a few points because our server was new and made no bones about telling us how she didn't know the menu well. The last time I was there we were served by a seasoned tuxedo wearing waiter, which really enhanced the experience. Also not having a few Italian restaurant basics on the menu. We were offered complimentary after diner drinks by the charming Maitre D' for no particular reason. We didn't accept but it was noted.

My sister, a dear friend and had an 8:00 pm reservation at Matteo's on 12/17/16. It was our first time there. We really liked the restaurant's historic ambiente with with its spacious, vinyl-red, very comfortable booths in the old Hollywood style. There seemed to have been a private event on the second floor of the restaurant as well as a larger party in a separate room adjacent to the main dining room, where we were seated. The main dining room was quite filled as well. We had a very hard time getting any attention from our waiter. After a few minutes, we were offered water. Then it took a long time until we even had menus and the wine list in our hands. We looked those over. About 30 minutes after we had been seated, we each ordered a glass of wine and our food. The waiter was helpful, but clearly stressed. About 15 minutes after we ordered food and wine, now about 45 minutes after we had been seated, we still did not have the wine we ordered. Except for the complimentary warm, cheese bread which came quite delayed as well. The bread was excellent, by the way. But now, after 45 minutes in waiting and not even a glass of wine in front of us, we gave up and decided to leave. To be honest, we felt quite ignored most of the time. We suspect there was not enough staff for what was going on in the restaurant at the time. Or perhaps it was something else. Perhaps some helpful explanations of what was going on may have helped us understand the situation and wait time better.
