About Matsuya Japanese Restaurant

With over 40 years of experience in Japanese cuisine, Master Iida offers his freshly hand-crafted sushi. This traditional Japanese style is one you cannot find anywhere else.
With our premium Japanese Sake, served hot or cold, you will be transported to the true experience of Japanese dining. More over, we offer a selection of imported Japanese beers, such as Sapporo Asahi and Kirin. Unlike the usual Japanese restaurants that serve fusion dishes, Matsuya offers name-styled Japanese dishes, like our steak teriyaki ,our takoyaki, or bitter heart(rolled with cucumber, tuna, salmon, avocado, kaiware without rice and ponzu sauce). We are conveniently located at the heart of Lakeview, next to the Belmont train station. We are very easy to find.

Great casual place for Japanese food. The sushi is very fresh and they have a very expansive menu of non-sushi menu items.

Matsuya Restaurant is a neighborhood gem that I’m so grateful to have found. The restaurant features quality sushi with toro and chutoro options, for example. However, what I enjoyed about Matsuya was the approachable, home style comfort food of Japanese America: sukiyaki, tempura, gyoza, donburis. Curry was the only thing that seemed to be missing from the menu.

Like any restaurant, however, Matsuya features great dishes and not so great dishes. My family enjoyed the sushi, nigiri, sashimi. Everything had beautiful color, flavor. I wish the sashimi came out with a bowl of rice. The ramen broth as well as miso soup seemed to have too much hon-dashi leaving a fishy flavor; however the ramen also had a generous portion of chashu and noodles. The gyoza was also fried nicely but it didn’t seem homemade. The agedashi tofu was just right.

On a cold Chicago day, the sukiyaki was delicious! The broth wasn’t overly fishy or overly salty. There was a well proportioned amount of noodles, meat, tofu, vegetables. Plus, it was piping hot!

Moreover, the price for the meal was reasonable! For the amount we ordered, we were pleasantly surprised by the fair pricing. It allowed us to order more food, and try more things.

The restaurant has been around for decades with the inside renovated. It’s a small, cozy place that offers great service (tea was always warm, water filled, pacing well) and ambience (not too quiet, not too loud, brightly lit, with TVs playing sports on mute). I’ll definitely be returning when I want a little taste of home cooked sukiyaki and quality sashimi.

Best sushi in Chicago and that's saying something. Fresh as can be, we got the whole makeral sashimi and you could see how fresh it was by how clear the eye was.

Back when I was growing up in Chicago, my parents used to take me to Matsuya (in its former location) some 40+ years ago. I'm very pleased to report that the food and service is still great - for Matsuya to still be around in an increasingly competitive Chicago food scene, they must be doing something right! Sushi was excellent, nicely presented, and traditional nigiri and maki are still offered alongside more modern variations (with mayo or spicy additions, for example). Special combinations, such as tempura and teriyaki or yakitori, with sushi and/or sashimi, and of course, rice, miso soup, and dessert, are excellent, satisfying, and a great value. Keep up the great work!

One of the very BEST sushi restaurants in Chicago! I'm just sorry it took us so long to find it. The fish is first rate and the presentation is absolutely beautiful. The wait staff was friendly, helpful, and professional, and the room is beautiful. I'm sure we will be regulars!

An authentic Japanese restaurant. Food was very good and very fresh. You wouldn't think the most of this place from the signage but their sushi is the real deal. Also ordered ramen which stole the show. I can't even think of another Lakeview sushi spot that's better.

A great neighborhood place for delicious, high-quality sushi and/or hot Japanese food. Parking tends to be easy to find. And it's very reasonably priced.

Matsuya is a family favorite of ours. We have been dining at this restaurant and its previous location for probably 15-20 years. We love the sushi and the tempura and Teriyaki dishes.

Great spot for delicious Japanese food at a great value! We ordered one bowl of tuna sashimi and one of the salmon sashimi and both came with rice and other toppings. It was so much food for the price!! The presentation of the bowls was very nice and the food was delicious. The restaurant is fine inside, and there was plenty of seating so we were able to sit down right away. Good service as well, all of the servers were very friendly. If you’re looking for a no frills sushi restaurant at a good price check out Matsuya!

We celebrated our daughters 21st bday. It was not crowded being a Friday. But it's best to always make reservation. We were happy and satisfied with our meal. Just didn't like the ice green tea. It did not taste like it. It tasted like water mixed with green powder. But overall it t was a good 1st experience.

We visited on a friday evening and there were only a few tables occupied when we arrived. The kitchen/sushi bar had a long list of delivery orders and focused on fulfilling those orders before customers that were in the restaurant. We waited nearly an hour for our sushi. Luckily our son's food was from the kitchen as opposed to the sushi bar so his food came out quickly and he was able to eat while we waited. However when we asked for an update as to when our food would be ready we were told there were still several take out orders to be made before our food would come out. Only when we told them we would cancel our order, they prioritized our food. Not only was this unacceptable, but the host (who I was told was the manager) was also quite rude. When we arrived, I asked her if they had high chairs to which I was met with the response "wait for a server". After standing around for a several minutes by our table with no server arriving I looked at her and said there wasn't a server coming by. I also asked told her that we had an open table reservation and I wanted to make sure she had checked us in because she was clearly pre-occupied when we arrived. She said to leave our name with the server, when I was told by our server that the manager had to mark our reservation as honored. I told her as such and she didn't say anything and just gave me a blank stare. It was after this exchange that the server asked me for my name since they said they didn't have a reservation (which I provided and showed my confirmation email). I told her that after all the time we had to wait for our food, they better a least not mark my reservation as a no-show, which I am sure the manager had intended on doing.

We used to love Matsuya when they were at their previous space in Wrigleyville. We had a poor experience with their new location after they re-opened, but figured we would give it one more shot this visit in case they had to work out kinks. We likely will not be coming back.

This long time neighborhood Japanese restaurant has excellent quality sushi and sashimi. We did not have any of the hot food but it looked and smelled great when it passed by on the way to other tables. Our traditional fish and special rolls were exceptionally good.
There is a bit of a language barrier with the wait staff but they are friendly and efficient. Not a trendy hot spot, but if you like high quality sushi at not such a high price come on over! Uni and Scallop sashimi and shooters were the highlight of my evening - if you like Uni this place had some very good uni.
The only negative - we did not like the Salmon Miso. It was a strange combo of flavor and texture. This is coming from someone accused of liking Klingon style food...

Was visiting Chicago and ended up having dinner here on a week night. The sushi was impressive; one of the better sushi places I've been to in the U.S. and other places. Great job sushi chef. The prices were also fairly reasonable. If only they didn't play cheesy pop tunes... but overall, great find in Chicago. Will definitely come back.

The sushi at this restaurant is as good as sushi in Japan! I lived in Tokyo for 1 year and when I returned to Chicago it was difficult to find any sushi that could compare, but this restaurant managed to do so. No surprise the owner and sushi chef is Japanese and has been in the states 25 years. He endured you are happy with the food quality and that you receive good service. Close to Wrigleyville the location is great!

My daughter took me to Matsuya for Mother's Day. We enjoyed an abundance of delicate, flavorful, inventive sushi, wonderful edamame, tempura, miso, dumplings, and green tea mochis. Our meal was wonderful and memorable. When I lived in the neighborhood so many years ago, Matsuya was my favorite place and it still is! If anything, it's better than ever.

I am a disappointed with our last meal at Matsuya. The restaurant has been an old stand by for decent home style Japanese food in the neighborhood. Tonight, the sukiyaki beef was overcooked and not very tasty. The sushi was average, but that is nothing new for Chicago restaurants. We haven't found any great sushi spots in the city. The servers were nice as usual. However the restaurant refused to take our Open Table voucher. Our only explanation was they don't get paid for those vouchers. I think Matusuya is coming off our go to list. Sad but true

Good food, great service and it's easy to find a parking space nearby. They have an extensive sushi menu with lots of inventive choices, including many vegetarian makis. Because they get a variety of fresh fish, they also offer it cooked - teriaki or shioyaki. We had the butter scallop appetizer, which was excellent.

We set out to try and find a decent place in the area for food around 8pm on a Friday, and after 4 places told us they had a 1 hour wait we gave up and opened OpenTable. Matsuya had a good rating and was inexpensive so we decided to give it a shot. Food was awesome, not sushi that's going to win a James Beard award but considering the four of us spent about $25 a person for enough food to stuff us all, it was the best sushi around. Definitely on my list to go back, they were awesome!

A member of our dining party had serious gluten free dietary restrictions (celiac disease) , and the staff, including the manager oversaw his food selection to ensure that he didn't order incorrectly.

The sushi and gyoza were excellent and the service friendly and efficient (got us out in time for cubbies).

Excellent food that is designed to appeal not only to the taste buds but to the eyes as well. Great for bringing a date as well as bringing a family. The noise level is just about right where if you have a date you can have lovely conversation an have the background noise cover up any of the awkward moments. They have a variety of different Japanese beers and wines and I really enjoyed the presentation of their Maki's.
