Remembered this restaurant from the ‘70s and ‘80s-was one of our favorites-excited to realize it moved a few blocks south from original location-as good as remembered and prices exceptional for the area-highly recommend if you love Japanese cuisine as we do

Last minute reservation for 15 people to celebrate my birthday and not only did they accommodate us but they helped to make it a memorable and truly special birthday. I would recommend to anyone and will return soon.

Matsuya is a nice, friendly neighborhood restaurant that serves good Japanese food - both Sushi and cooked foods. We always like what we order there and it is a great value. They even have Sukiyaki.
Parking is easy (except on Cubs game days.) Definitely worth visiting.

We recall this restaurant from many years ago when it was one of the only Japanese restaurants in Chicago. We haven't been to its new location despite the fact that it has been there for many years. Our meal was wonderful!

Matsuya has always been a Wrigleyville favorite, and was once located at a larger space. The owner is Japanese as is the lead sushi chef. The quality of the fish is outstanding. One can certainly order Americanized sushi rolls that are good, but it’s best to focus on the tuna flight and traditional nigiri and maki. Appetizers are also perfectly Japanese, and most are home made. Few Japanese owned sushi options remain, and Matsuya is authentic and delicious. The sushi bar offers omakase. Don’t expect a trendy River North phony sushi club scene, but you will be delighted in the taste. Highly recommended.

The nigiri was fresh and delicious. Unfortunately, the maki (rolls) were more “show” than “go”. While they had excellent flavor and texture, and the rice seemed fresh, there was little to no fish flavor that came through.
Sake selection was excellent and reasonably priced.
Service was also excellent.

Hands-down the most ridiculous and terrible experience I’ve ever had to date. I made reservations for nine of us for dinner at 6 o’clock and we had to make it to blue man group for an 8 o’clock show. We got there and the restaurant only had one or two tables full. There is two younger Asian girls that waited on us but definitely struggled with the language barrier and it was really difficult ordering specific things such as types of vodka and Splenda etc. Two of us got our sushi immediately while the rest of the group waited for at least 30 to 40 minutes until getting their food. They would bring the food out one at a time but it would be 20 minutes in between each – so a few of us already done eating and the other half won’t even served yet. We asked multiple times and the Manager and waitresses kind of ran around spastically yelling at each other and never addressed the situation that half of us hadn’t received food yet. Turns out because there was two waitresses and they weren’t communicating they thought each other had put the orders in but they never got put in, so every time one person asked whether food was they would throw that in right then and there but never really figured out who was left that hadn’t received their food yet. Three people ended up not getting served at all and we all just had to deal with it and get to the show so we weren’t late. When we got the bill there was things rang and wrong and nothing was adjusted or comp’d but we didn’t have time to deal with it. The restaurant was empty except for us and two other tables the entire night until 8 o’clock; I just don’t understand but it was absolutely ridiculous. It put a huge damper on the evening, of course they apologized as we left but it was an absolute chaotic nightmare with terrible, terrible service and Management.

Matsuya Restaurant is a neighborhood gem that I’m so grateful to have found. The restaurant features quality sushi with toro and chutoro options, for example. However, what I enjoyed about Matsuya was the approachable, home style comfort food of Japanese America: sukiyaki, tempura, gyoza, donburis. Curry was the only thing that seemed to be missing from the menu.

Like any restaurant, however, Matsuya features great dishes and not so great dishes. My family enjoyed the sushi, nigiri, sashimi. Everything had beautiful color, flavor. I wish the sashimi came out with a bowl of rice. The ramen broth as well as miso soup seemed to have too much hon-dashi leaving a fishy flavor; however the ramen also had a generous portion of chashu and noodles. The gyoza was also fried nicely but it didn’t seem homemade. The agedashi tofu was just right.

On a cold Chicago day, the sukiyaki was delicious! The broth wasn’t overly fishy or overly salty. There was a well proportioned amount of noodles, meat, tofu, vegetables. Plus, it was piping hot!

Moreover, the price for the meal was reasonable! For the amount we ordered, we were pleasantly surprised by the fair pricing. It allowed us to order more food, and try more things.

The restaurant has been around for decades with the inside renovated. It’s a small, cozy place that offers great service (tea was always warm, water filled, pacing well) and ambience (not too quiet, not too loud, brightly lit, with TVs playing sports on mute). I’ll definitely be returning when I want a little taste of home cooked sukiyaki and quality sashimi.

Back when I was growing up in Chicago, my parents used to take me to Matsuya (in its former location) some 40+ years ago. I'm very pleased to report that the food and service is still great - for Matsuya to still be around in an increasingly competitive Chicago food scene, they must be doing something right! Sushi was excellent, nicely presented, and traditional nigiri and maki are still offered alongside more modern variations (with mayo or spicy additions, for example). Special combinations, such as tempura and teriyaki or yakitori, with sushi and/or sashimi, and of course, rice, miso soup, and dessert, are excellent, satisfying, and a great value. Keep up the great work!

An authentic Japanese restaurant. Food was very good and very fresh. You wouldn't think the most of this place from the signage but their sushi is the real deal. Also ordered ramen which stole the show. I can't even think of another Lakeview sushi spot that's better.

Great spot for delicious Japanese food at a great value! We ordered one bowl of tuna sashimi and one of the salmon sashimi and both came with rice and other toppings. It was so much food for the price!! The presentation of the bowls was very nice and the food was delicious. The restaurant is fine inside, and there was plenty of seating so we were able to sit down right away. Good service as well, all of the servers were very friendly. If you’re looking for a no frills sushi restaurant at a good price check out Matsuya!

We celebrated our daughters 21st bday. It was not crowded being a Friday. But it's best to always make reservation. We were happy and satisfied with our meal. Just didn't like the ice green tea. It did not taste like it. It tasted like water mixed with green powder. But overall it t was a good 1st experience.
