This is truly a neighborhood gem not to be overlooked. From the time you are greeted to the time you leave you feel like you are dining with friends. The food is wonderful, the roasted chicken is the best in the area and the tuna tartar is fabulous as well as the fried oysters. The apple tarte tatine is delicious and well worth the calories! We will be sure to keep this on our list of local go to restaurants.
Splendid New Years eve at Matisse . She the oysters to start and me the Arugula salad. Oysters were fresh, neatly presented and had sufficient garnishes to elaborate the taste. Salad was crisp, garnished with excellent shaved cheese and the house dressing was perfect and did not impair the crisp taste of the salad. She the lamb chops, tender and cooked as ordered. Me the Pasta in a very light sauce with different type mushrooms and shallots. Dessert was a sensational poached pear. One glass each of champagne and a bottle of French red wine that complimented each course of our dining experience.
Lovely ambiance, very good food. Nice and quiet in the back room. Food is quite tasty, well prepared and presented. Panko pecan crusted snapper had a lovely buttery taste, nice w the green salad and grilled asparagus. Out of town visitor loved the shrimp linguine. Pass on the meringue dessert, way too much sugary meringue and not enough ice cream. Apple tart was a great dessert to share, with yummy caramel sauce and puff pastry crust.
We usually love this restaurant. The food is always excellent, and it is usually not as noisy as it was this visit. The service, however, was not good. The server was quite hard to find and main course was slow to come. Our appetizers came pretty promptly, which made the rest of the meal seem even slower.
Matisse continues to be one of our favorite and most dependable easy-to-use restaurants , what with their pleasant and dignified ambiance, wonderful and interesting menu of seasonal delights along with dependable classics, and just the right amount of appeal to guests of all vintages. It certainly is one of our top choices for a comfort night out as well as bigger deals. It's a great place to bring out-of-town guests who we want to be able to talk with while enjoying a superb meal. For self-interest reasons, I'm glad that it seems to be somewhat off the beaten track for trendy foodies. Keep doing what you do so well Matisse.
I have enjoyed both my visits to this restaurant, once for brunch and more recently for dinner. The food is beautifully prepared and served, the wait staff is excellent, and the dining room is lovely and comfortable. I plan to return. My only caution is that the prices featured on the website's menu do not match the actual prices charged. For instance, the scallops I saw on the website menu were listed at $20, but the price on the actual menu was $29. Other items were similarly more expensive. Matisse needs to update the information it shares with the public.
That said, Matisse is a fine restaurant, well worth visiting. I am happy to have found it, and I look forward to my next meal there. I'll just make sure that my bank balance can handle it.
First the good: The restaurant is very nice - tables just the right distance apart so you don't feel cramped, clean, pretty, comfortable, lovely windows, and good acoustics for conversation -- and the food was very good. The downside: The service was really disappointing. Although our server was very polite and nice, we didn't see her much beyond when we first came in, when we ordered, and when it was dessert and check time. When bread is served before appetizers, and a guest asks for butter literally 4 times (of 3 different people), and it doesn't come until AFTER the meal, something is not quite right. When drinks are empty and non one has come around to ask if we need something -- again, not quite right. We had to ask 3 people for knives -- the staff that picked up our appetizer plates and the silverware that was used with those didn't seem to notice that we would need new knives with which to eat our meals. The crew that brought our meals didn't notice that we had no knives, either! Once they had dropped off the food and gone on their way, we noticed! Then, we had to flag people down to try to get silverware while the food was still warm. Again, our server was not in sight, and it puts a diner in an uncomfortable position to have to flag down another table's server to ask for things (butter, knives). In a hurry, he scurried around the dining room to pick up knives from reset tables -- again, not something that should be done at a restaurant with these prices. Although all staff were kind and gracious and had a great attitude, it was the attentiveness and attention to detail that was missing. Given the price of a meal for four with appetizers, main courses, dessert and wine, I would have expected that bringing friends here for a nice meal and to catch up wouldn't require us to do so much 'work'!
Every visit to Matisse is special. Had a great bottle of Sangiovese red wine for $30. My date had a fresh, crispy and properly dressed Caesar salad, I had the summer squash soup which is a rare treat. Our appetizer were tasty and exquisitely seasoned duck egg rolls. Lady had a great steak prepared rare and I had a very tasty Australian cut of beef. Service was excellent and this dining experience is certainly worth the price.
Very lovely old fashioned, elegant restaurant. Not noisy - no TV's..thank goodness. Service was excellent. One of our dishes was superb - the soft shelled crabs. I found the appetizer tasteless - endives with smoked trout. The trout was excellent, but hardly any. The endives lacked a good vinagrette. My main course was the special, lobster salad. The lobster was swimming in water and part of it was very mushy. The accompanying salad was fine. Dessert was a merengue with hazelnut ice cream and swiss chocolate. Chocolate and hazelnut were excellent - much too much merengue. But, I would totally recommend the restaurant. I just chose wrong that night.
Consistently good, well-prepared, tasty food presented nicely, served properly on tables covered with white table cloths. No used flatware is placed back on the table when a plate is cleared. Delicious apple tart for dessert with ice cream served at the right hardness - not just a hard frozen lump that a spoon or fork will not cut. A place where good food food and good conversation is paramount.
Charming second floor seating next to French doors that were open to balcony bedecked with flowers. Yes, we combed the stairs but well worth it to be seated in a quiet spot. The food was very good, the service was lovely, everything contributed to a great evening.
