We've always liked Matisse and preferred to be in a table upstairs because we could hear ourselves. Last Friday was too noisy, but that's forgivable. The service was good. The food, however, was disappointing. Besides the arctic char and the scallops, which were delicious, the rest of our dishes were terrible. The pasta with crab meat was tasteless; the pecan-crusted snapper was overcooked, tasteless and not even hot. We should have sent these dishes back, but decided not to. We're not giving up on Matisse yet, but I think whoever is manning the kitchen should pay a lot more attention to the food they serve.
Surprise gem in Friendship Heights. My duck was succulent, my GF's gnochi flavorful. Everything was tastefully prepared, service was prompt, ambiance subdued and sublime. We'll be back for another nice occasion.
All three of us were very pleased with the meal (mine was the NY strip steak, my wife and daughter both had the beef entrée from the short menu for the day), including the desserts. and the service was excellent. We've been to Matisse before, always had a good experience; we all agreed that this was the best mean we've ever had there, and we'll be back.
A truly French Experience! Best French Toasts in the zone.
Mother’s Day Brunch
Delicious food in an elegant setting. This restuaurant is a real gem. I wish we had discovered it earlier.
Excellant small restaurant with very tasty food.
Perfect food excellent and service very friendly.
This is one of my favorite restaurants. Personal service, excellent food and sophisticated but welcoming ambience.
Great dining experience!
celebrated my friends birthday. We all loved the brunch. The beingnets are fabulous and a great way to start off the meal. We each had a drink to start. We shared mussels, the omelet and the crabcake benedict. all was beautifully plated and tasted wonderful. kudos to the chef
Terrific across the board. Great food, great service, and all in a lovely and "quiet enough to have a good conversation with my wife and friend" location. Matisse does not get enough credit for all they have to offer.
Our salmon and bronzino meals were excellent. Kale salad was excellent. Beet salad was excellent. Window seat was a plus for the two of us as we could see outside and inside. Jazz in the background was terrific in that you could hear it but it wasn't blasting and interrupting conversation. Server was knowledgeable, professional, a man of hospitality.
It had been a few years since I’ve been to this restaurant. Our server’s answer to some basic questions about the menu was often “I don’t know...”. The special was a crab cake ( that was great) couple with a soft shell crab ( not great) that was deep fried. It should have been sautéd. It was hard to distinguish it from the Cali Mari (also fried...). Just was expecting so much better based on our last visit.
We enjoyed excellent food that was prepared to perfection, attentive service, and beautiful decor & ambiance. It all made for a wonderful evening and was similar to eating in an excellent European restaurant. Highly recommend.
Easter brunch was a bit overpriced but wonderful in every other way!
Matisse is a seriously good restaurant with a kitchen that is notably superior by Washington standards. Our dinner there last Saturday was the second at Matisse within a week; we look forward to yet another dinner there very soon. The menu is imaginative and the execution is exacting, good food, good ambience and very, very professional service by an attractive cast of servers who go out of their way to make the dining experience a pleasure. For anyone looking for a top of the line meal in an attractive setting, go to Matisse.
We love Matisse. It never fails to offer good food, good ambience, good service. I would like to see some new plates in the menu......
Matisse is the perfect spot for a delicious lunch in a beautiful spot where you can enjoy a quiet meal. The service was impeccable only surpassed by the memorable scrimp salad. Outstanding in every way!
We love the atmosphere in Matisse and the service is excellent. The food is good but , but, as always, there is room for improvement.
An elegant cozy place with an interesting menu and great staff. Makes me wonder why I have lived ion DC for 40 years and have never heard of it.
A wonderful place. Duck is delicious. Beautiful wines.
Our first time, and it was exceptional! Everything was superb! Excellent cuisine, great wine selection, impeccable service. Not a single complaint or shortcoming. Can’t wait to go back soon!
We have been to Matisse several times and it never disappoints. After moving away from area for 3 years, we dined there this past week to celebrate our return. The kitchen was kind enough to make an entree for me which had previously been on the menu but since removed - such a treat as it had always been my favorite there. So happy to see that the restaurant is what is was when we left - I'm sure we will now continue to visit frequently.
As always Call Matisse was lovely. Excellent food and service, a favorite place in D.C. consistently!
Great atmosphere, wonderful food and perfect service.
Group of five. 4 loved it and vegetarian was disappointed with only option gnocchi.
Brought granddaughters for special white tablecloth dinner. They loved every minute.
Elegant ambiance, great food and wonderful service.
Always wonderful from attentive service to the quality of the food! It is truly a neighborhood gem! We will return and return, thank you!
Matisse is a lovely French restaurant in Chevy Chase. It is charming and quiet. We enjoyed the fact that we were able to talk. The food was excellent. We all had fish dishes that were fresh, prepared well with a lovely presentation. Our waiter seemed to forget about us toward the end of the meal. I think overall the service was fine. Our waiter might have been having an off day. We will be back.
Matisse represents itself as serving French cuisine. It is anything but French. There are several dishes with homemade pasta and leans toward Italian. Appetizers of fries calamari - more Italian/American; 2) wild mushroom soup no flavor and too thick: 3) mussels lacked garlic, butter and parsley. Entrees were red snapper, roast duck and scallops. Of the 3 only the scallops was somewhat French. All the food we ordered lacked seasoning.
Four of us were looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. We had never been to Matisse before but, since we live in Maryland, we didn't want to go all the way downtown. The weather was dreadful - stormy and cold. Fortunately, we couldn't have picked a better spot. There was street parking nearby and it was free (the meters stopped at 6 pm). The restaurant was quiet (hooray!). There was a lovely fireplace in the back room where we sat. Our waitress was helpful but not overbearing. The menu was varied, and we all ordered something different. We shared a reasonably priced white wine, two appetizers, four entrees, and two desserts. My tuna was not quite rare enough, but the lentils and yogurt sauce that it was served with was delicious. Everything else was superb. We lingered for more than two hours. Would definitely go again.
My nephew and I really enjoyed the food,it was delicious. The service was wonderful, the server was attentive without being intrusive and the ambiance was lovely. The noise level was low so that you could carry on a conversation.
I would normally give 4 stars for food at Matisse but this time the fish (branzino) dish was uninspiring. But the wine special, a bottle of Saint-Estephe, was excellent.
Great evening! Had to dine early as we had theater obligations. Dining Room started to fill prior to our departure. Service was OK-things like; the server never poured more than the first glass from the bottle, water glasses not refilled, bread service once, etc:
Everything was excellent. Great food, beautifully prepared and wonderful service at reasonable prices.
Always consistent, a neighborhood gem!!!
The food is consistently good, as is the service. We consider it a neighborhood gem!!
This is a beautiful space! Charming and quiet which is hard to find these days. The service was just right- enough attention without being overbearing or over friendly. And the food is consistently good. Salads are cold and crisp and salmon done well. Chicken perfectly grilled. And the coffee was not weak as in most places!!! A great place to be able to have a conversation over a good meal.
We had an outstanding evening at this quaint gem of a french restaurant in Friendship Heights. The cuisine was excellent, the wine list is quite good, and the service was exceptional.
