A hidden gem! For neighbors and special occasions. Excellent quality food with generous portions.
Amazing! Great food and impeccable service!
As always Matisse was perfect! The food was perfectly prepared, the wine selection terrific and well-priced, and the service excellent. I don’t know how they keep doing it, but this neighborhood restaurant has been delivering wonderful meals for years. Bravo!
One of our go to places in upper NW DC. Matisse is consistently satisfying on the cuisine front, and offers a pleasant ambience as well. The soft shell crab offering last night was a particularly good example of one of Matisse's best dishes. The scallops were generous in size and number, cooked just right and seasoned in a way that let the essence of the scallops shine through. The watermelon salad is a refreshing opener in the summer. The wine specials are thoughtfully selected, always good and usually a good value. We've never been disappointed in more than a dozen visits.
Always superb! Have been going there for decades and plan to continue doing so.
best spot in the area
you will think you are on the upper East Side
Excellent dinner, service and ambiance. We were five and went for a special birthday and enjoyed the warm french bread with olive oil, the appetizers (~mussels, tomatoes and mozzarella and more), the Entrees (large tender scallops, juicy Chicken roasted au jus with perfect pommes frites, nicely prepared beef medallions) and several wonderful desserts -- profiteroles, poached pears, and a Matisse Meringue. - all excellent! We'll be back!
Matisse's sophisticated ambiance enhances the dining experience. Our server was excellent. My friend and I especially liked the way she had the kitchen separately plate the appetizer and dessert we shared. We began with roasted heirloom red & golden beets, served with goat cheese & toasted pecans over mixed greens. My friend had one of the specials as her entree: soft shelled Maryland crab, served over succotash. I went with grilled Icelandic salmon, served with white quinoa & toasted almonds in a citrus sauce. We completed our delicious repast with a tarte made with honey-crisp apples with vanilla gelato and caramel sauce. The pastry was so very light. It was an excellent evening.
Beautiful restaurant and attentive service.
This is classic French - well-prepared and -presented. Chicken and scallop entrees were super, the lobster salad not so much (and over-priced for one tail, tomatoes, avocado, and lots of greens). Desserts were elegant and luscious. Worth the trip, but choose wisely.
Matisse consistently remains one of our favorite restaurants, particularly for neighborhood-like dining but with much more refined and excellent cuisine. We love the place.
Nice except for noise level
The food and service were exceptional. The portions generous and very tasty. The only issue was the noise level in the back dining room which was when we arrived quite loud. After some patrons left, it was a little quieter.
We had an excellent experience on Saturday night. The food was fantastic, service excellent, and the ambiance is perfect! I love Matisse and totally recommend it.
Marvelous food served with professional aplomb in a genteel setting. Overall, a very satisfying experience. From the greeting at the front when entering to the good-byes at the finish, the management and wait staff remained observant and professional. The martini was shaken, not stirred and the wine was excellently paired.
Matisse is a neighborhood jewel. The food is always delicious, portion size just right and there is something for everyone.
Matisse is a Washington gem! For two decades, it has served a wide variety of delicious food in a lovely setting. The wine list is first rate and the service attentive. I recommend it in the highest possible terms!
The food was excellent all of our dinner dishes were great, same with Salad. Have been wanting to eat at Matisse for a while and finally got the chance. Will highly recommend it to my friends.
Matisse has been a favorite of ours for years. The food, service, and ambiance is wonderful. Matisse also has a terrific wine selection.
Matisse is our favorite go-to restaurant. Food has been consistently good all these many years and the menu varies appropriately. Service is always good and friendly. Really nice restaurant. Lovely ambience too.
Matisse is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants and it never disappoints. We love the quiet atmosphere, wonderful service and delicious dining options.
Excellent in all respects!
Lovely neighborhood restaurant that has not lost its charm; wonderful food and attentive friendly service.
It was wonderful! Ambience, food, excellent service! Our friend had never been there and now she is a fan...
We love Matisse and go often. First class!!
Matisse never disappoints. Great atmosphere. Excellent food. Always vegetarian options which are really important to us. This time we brought to mobility-challenged guests and they were treated with respect and aided to our table. We will be back often.
Fabulous dinner, a little expensive but the quality was very good. Would return anytime.
Nice evening with friends. Good food and nice ambiance. Easy to have conversation.
We are regulars at Matisse. The food is great, the service reliable and the ambience enough north of casual to make dining there a special event. At our last dinner, the cornmeal crusted calamari was particularly tasty.
We went two Saturday nights in a row because we loved it so much
Ignored for 20 minutes by the waiter after we sat down at our table.
We've always liked Matisse and preferred to be in a table upstairs because we could hear ourselves. Last Friday was too noisy, but that's forgivable. The service was good. The food, however, was disappointing. Besides the arctic char and the scallops, which were delicious, the rest of our dishes were terrible. The pasta with crab meat was tasteless; the pecan-crusted snapper was overcooked, tasteless and not even hot. We should have sent these dishes back, but decided not to. We're not giving up on Matisse yet, but I think whoever is manning the kitchen should pay a lot more attention to the food they serve.
Surprise gem in Friendship Heights. My duck was succulent, my GF's gnochi flavorful. Everything was tastefully prepared, service was prompt, ambiance subdued and sublime. We'll be back for another nice occasion.
All three of us were very pleased with the meal (mine was the NY strip steak, my wife and daughter both had the beef entrée from the short menu for the day), including the desserts. and the service was excellent. We've been to Matisse before, always had a good experience; we all agreed that this was the best mean we've ever had there, and we'll be back.
A truly French Experience! Best French Toasts in the zone.
