Thoroughly enjoyed dinner here. We stuck to the evening specials. Swordfish was outstanding. Profiteroles were yummy. Will definitely be returning.
Always superb! We’ve eaten here many, many times over more than 25 years and it is always terrific!
I had dinner with 2 friends from New York, and we were all very pleased. We ordered the pecan-crusted snapper which was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the creme brûlée was perfect also. Good non-intrusive service and the restaurant is tastefully decorated for the holidays. A fine evening.
The food as usual was superb, nothing bad everything exceptional. Unfortunately, the new manager, Mr. Almeida has absolutely no clue about customer service. We had a reservation at 7:30 and we arrived early about 7:10. There were plenty of tables available but he refused to sit us down pushing us constantly to sit on a a high table (which we don’t like, that is why we make reservations). Every 7 or 8 minutes we will check with him and he continuously refused to sit us down. Plenty of tables open and we kept asking why not sitting us there and he continue to argue with us that we have arrived early. Evidently Mr. Almeida is very inexperienced and it is a shame that Matisse, such a wonderful restaurant, will how with such an inexperienced manager. He should be sent to basic customer service training. Even after waiting for about half an hour and finally sitting us down, he did even have the genteelness to come to your table to ask us how things were going. Let’s hope next time we go there he is not longer there.
We are regulars and like the restaurant greatly. but this evening we were seated next to a very noisy table fir 10 one of whom was a person with a penetrating screech. There is probably no way to avoid this on occasion but it was unpleasant.
This is a lovely restaurant between Tenleytown and Friendship Heights. The interior is very attractive, though I suggest you sit downstairs and not upstairs. The food is quite good— loved the pecan crusted red snapper—. The service was less than it could have been, because there wasn’t enough staff upstairs. And— there was one table that was sooo loud it made it less nice for the rest of us. Don’t know what to do I’m that situation.
We love Matisse as a reliable, romantic neighborhood restaurant. The food is always very good. The service is always charming. We enjoy going there when we're up for a night out but don't want to travel far from home.
Always wonderful at Matisse. Food delicious and the back room with the fire place on a cold day is as good as it gets. They had to chase out five tables at three o'clock. What a recommendation!
A nice gem in DC. , other open and close but this one is something you can count on. The noise level is also low which is important for my friends and I.
It is always a pleasant experience
What a lovely surprise in Tenleytown. Our evening was everything we hoped for during a last minute family celebration. The menu was enticing, the food delicious with a fresh, lively, clean palette; and our server was attentive and flexible.
This is a gem of a neighborhood restaurant and we will definitely return. Elegant surroundings.
We had a lovely dinner with special friends at Matisse. The shrimp pasta, salmon and chicken dishes were delicious. The apple tart and the creme brûlée were perfect. The servers were warm and friendly and efficient. The ambiance was elegant and tasteful. We will come back.
Matisse continues to provide delicious food in an attractive setting.
Excellent food quiet and gracious atmosphere. Wonderful time
We had an outstanding brunch. Friendly service, not-ridiculous prices, good atmosphere. What else would you want?
It had been a while since we went to Matisse but we will certainly be going more often again. It was a lovely experience -- ambiance, food, service all combined to make it a thoroughly pleasant evening. Our friends were thrilled that Alaska halibut was on the daily menu because they believe it is far superior to Atlantic halibut after their trip to Alaska. We all ordered fish and had a very reasonably priced Chablis to accompany (although I was surprised at the paucity of French whites on the wine list).
Service gracious but slow. Long gaps between courses. Staff overloaded
It was a quiet weekday evening. The restaurant was half full. I had requested a table by the window, but when we arrived, we were asked if we would prefer a cozy table by the fire in the back room because the front room was a bit chilly. We opted for the fire. Our waiter was courteous and efficient; food was very, very good. I think they would offer butter as well as olive oil with the delicious warm bread that is served. overall it was a perfect evening.
Better than ever!
Wonderful neighborhood place for a Sunday brunch where you can actually carry on a conversation! Food very good - we had the Chesapeake Eggs Benedict. The wait person was helpful but not overly attentive. Will definitely go again!
EXCELLENT food beautifully prepared. Attentive service and the ambiance is perfect for celebrations or a quiet date night. A perfect restaurant with easy parking great location and a fun bar area as an alternative for more casual dining. Always a great go to!
Matisse is a neighborhood gem. The chef delivers high quality and deliciously elegant food and the cocktails are well made. The staff are professional and welcoming, and will take care of you!
Excellent in so many ways...service, food, ambience. Well done!
Relatives from out of town raved about the food and presentation. She had the ahi tuna cooked just as she liked, he had the canard confit and was over-the-top impressed. I had the gnocchi, excellent paste with the perfect crème sauce. Service was perfect! Drinks were well crafted. Always a pleasure to dine at Matisse!
Very nice experience although the Glass of champagne at $ 18 was overpriced by about double.
food was good but not great. Omelette did not have much flavor, potato sides same. fresh fruit which came with it was not fresh and mostly applies!
Food was excellent as usual. It is important that the taste of the food doesn't vary from visit to visit.
We always love Matisse. We are just so happy that it is in our neighborhood. Thank you for being there Matisse!
We have enjoyed Matisse since it opened 18 years ago. Delicious, clean cuisine. Always fresh and seasonal from veggies, fish and meat options. Our favorite DC NW restaurant!
As always, the food was delicious and accompanied by excellent wine and attentive service. Matisse remains one of our favorite restaurants.
Assured we would have one of two window tables we booked the reservation. Upon arrival we were told both of the window tables were reserved for others. Worsening our disappointment was being seated close to a table with a guest with a voice that could be heard throughout the restaurant. My wife an I texted our conversation to each other.
A very nice and attentive wait staff helped smooth the wrinkles of seating and noise level challenges.
A recommended wine was so so. A salad listed as bib lettuce turned out to be 2 large wedges of iceberg, an unfortunate beginning. My wife’s appetizer was a very good presentation of tuna with guacamole.
The entree’s were excellent and good. My soft shelled crab almandine was superior while my wife’s scallops were good but not outstanding.
Desert was amazing. A very nice mixed cheese plate with a generous serving of a very famous bourbon PAPPY VAN WINKLE. I’ve never before found PVW on a restaurant menu. This was the crown jewel of the dining experience.
Creative menu in a nice setting. Good wine selection.
Service was a little slow to start.
Wonderful as always - it’s always enjoyable to dine here!
Always a perfect dining experience!!!!!
One of our favorites
No one would expect ambiance to be so charming
Once a favorite, this was a big disappointment. Everything was wrong starting with being unable to get into the restaurant at five when it was supposedly open. We had to hang around for a few minutes till somebody came and unlock the door with no apology whatsoever. My salad arrived with one of the key ingredients featured in the menu missing. It eventually came when I asked for it The bread did not arrive until we were well into our salads. When my fish came it was undercooked although I had ordered medium well. We had to chase down the waiter to get my check. I d never had to work so hard for my supper. We won’t return soon.
We dropped in for Sunday brunch and loved it! The staff are friendly and professional, the atmosphere very classy and so relaxing. I had the Ahi tuna salad — absolutely perfect; my friends had French toast and the crispy banana pancakes — both loved their choices. Wonderful coffee. We enjoyed every minute of our visit and will definitely be back.
Met old friends where we knew we could great great food and service in a relatively quiet and attractive setting. Soft shells were perfectly sautéed and served on a delicious bed of succotash. Shrimp puttanesca was also quite good. Everyone was pleased with their dinner and the service. Parking was available for free on Wisconsin Ave directly in front of Matisse. As seems to be the case everywhere these days, wine as expensive (3x markup if not more).
I would have given a 5 star rating for the food if the soft shell crabs weren’t so small. We dine at Matisse because it is that rare restaurant that serves excellent food and is quiet enough that patrons can actually have a conversation without shouting. Especially important for those who, having reached a certain age, no longer hear as well as before.
First time eating here. Superb meal will definitely return!
