Food was terrible. We had to go out to eat after this meal.
Just have the Mateo’s Dinner. Really, that’s all you need to know. Sure, you can discuss food likes and dislikes to make sure you don’t get something you don’t like but trust Mateo on the rest.
Another fantastic family celebration at Mateo’s!
The six of us shared guacamole and roast potatoes with spicy aoli followed by fragrant chicken soup, heuvoes motulenos, Yucatán Beef and Rock Cod Tacos. Service was great as always from the inestimable Mario. When our Colombian family members requested more mild sauce their entres were quickly replaced. Desert flans and ice cream were also perfect.
We booked New Year's Eve at Mateo's for something different and were looking forward to some authentic Yucatan food only to find a box standard farm-to-table menu. If we'd wanted farm-to-table there are dozens of other restaurants we would have considered instead. The worst part, though, was the food wasn't good. The entrees seemed to have the same sauce poured on them regardless of what we ordered. The chicken was very dry and extremely salty, which for $30 for a chicken dish was really disappointing. We also ordered the flan dessert that everyone seems to rave about and found that also overcooked but with milk poured on top so it was a strange consistency of very dense overcooked flan with runny milk in each spoonful. We ordinarily would give a restaurant a break on a busy occasion like New Year's Eve, but there was only one other table seated when we arrived so we can't attribute things being overcooked and salty to a busy kitchen. We'd really been looking forward to trying Mateo's, but after a very unauthentic, expensive meal that wasn't very good, we won't be going back.

was told due to a special event they weren't serving them this night. what Mexican rest. doesnt have in the kitchen? disappointed from the start but the entrees were good.
First time here and we were happy. Came for lunch. Very quiet and we had a lot of attention. The food was good, could have been served hotter (temperature wise). Homemade tortillas were excellent. Tequilla choices incredible.
Lots of words on the menu and by the server to describe the cuisine with very ordinary results.
A few salad ingredients tasted moldy and I had to insist they take the charge off the bill - bad form. Definitely not worth it.
Decided to try Mateo's for a pre wine tasting brunch last Sunday. I am still dreaming of the flan. Not traditional but oh so very good! We will be back!
It was a delightful evening! The ambiance is warm with a beautifully lit bar. We were early for our dinner and had a leisurely time over appetizers and margaritas from the bar. Fantastic ceviche - paper tin halibut sprinkled with pomegranate seeds and diced mango! Perfectly seasoned and flavorful. The tacones are a must! Fun! All the entries were perfectly executed and delicious. The lamb and pork dishes were tender and spiced beautifully, and the fish was equally well prepared. The delicate and butternut squash lobster bisque soup was smooth and very flavorful without being too sweet. Delightful evening and we will return!
Well worth the extra walk.

The lamb was falling of the bone tender, the dungeness crab super fresh. We will definitely go back.
Delicious food, not to be missed in healdsburg. Gregarious staff, tasty cocktails, too!
We had a delightful lunch out in the patio, mid week, sitting in the shade enjoying the ambiance. Wonderful. Service was very attentive and well timed. Margaritas were delicious as were the Tacones and Tacos! We will be back!

Amazing food and service. Gave ourselves over to Chef Mateo and his great staff with tasting menu and wine pairings. Each course was tremendous.
chef matteo has a passion for food and it shows, the food tasted looked awesome, kinda short on staff that night but the waiter knew every detail, going back soon!

If your looking for the usual boring Mexican fair you better go elsewhere, however if your ready for an awesome culinary experience featuring cutting edge Latin Food get ready for a dining experience you will talk about For days after. Having Chef Mateo prepare you a meal from the Chef Tasting Menu is the equivalent of asking Picasso to paint you something, you don't know what you will get but you know it will be creative , masterful

We have eaten here dozens of times. Some how we never tried Mateo's Chef's Dinner. We will be doing so again soon!
Easily the best meal we've had at Mateo's and amongst the best ever, and we eat out around the world.
Try it. You will not be disappointed.
Come for the tacones but stay for the ceviche. In fact order another plate of ceviche. And can I have one more? Best ever.
Delightful Yucatan luncheon and would go back in a minute - 1st time and highly recommended by friends who live in the area. Enjoyed sitting outside in back.
Customer service & food service was extremely slow. 1.5 hours to receive appetizers. When entrees arrived, they were all cold. Mine had a bug on the squash blossoms. Steak was overcooked, some of the salmon was undercooked. Fish smelled fishy, not like high quality, fresh fish. Discussed issues with chef / owner Mateo who blamed us for having a large party. Refused to compensate for anything and was angry and yelling at my friend whose wife was the one we were there for celebrating her birthday. Would never go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone. Stay away at all costs!
We loved the old Yucatan menu and hadn't been there for quite awhile. We knew French food had entered the picture but weren't expecting the very pricey menu of all French and limited options. My pork elegantly described by our excellent waiter was over cooked and very tough and chewy, it would not have been if cooked right. My husbands very small piece of salmon was very fishy tasting, with just a few rather stringy greens, for over $30 seemed like there should have been more food or thought put into it. The waiter offered to replace my pork with something else but by then my husband was almost done so I declined the offer. Very disappointing. Again the staff and waiters were attentive and excellent, so I would hate this review to be detrimental to any of them.
Server was very knowledgeable and his recommendations were on point. The food was excellent and I liked the unique combinations. The tacanos were very tasty and the pumpkin crackers with guacamole was amazing! My husband had a beef dish and I had the lamb and both were very good.
The menu has changed in recent months and I did enjoy the food but unfortunately they have moved away from the "Latin" influences in the main courses. Margaritas are still great and authentic as well as many of the appetizers.
We had heard very good things about this place and were in a mood for some Yucatán style food. To our dismay this night the waiter said the chef wanted to cook French. Not what we had in mind. The food was fair to good, service was good but you only have one chance to cook Yucatán food and you missed. Not going back.
Pretentious service started out our experience, with the waiter telling us the chef doesn't like it when a table doesn't put their entire order in at once, so we weren't welcome to order more dishes if we were still hungry later (note that the restaurant was basically empty, so it's not like the kitchen was busy). There was nothing "cucina latina" about it - the food was confused, with the menu even saying it was "French California" cuisine. Food was mediocre at best. Extremely disappointing experience. Would never go back.
this used to be great mexican restaurant. they changed their concept to sustainable, organic, local but it's not mexican anymore so change your name...you're not cucina mateo like you used to be so a rebranding is in order so customers dont come in expecting what it used to be. also, dishes in new concept were fine but nothing unique, creative. pretty bland for wine country creative.
We were seated outside and saw the chef go out to the garden to get fresh herbs for our meal. You don't see that in Chicago where we are from! Very impressive!

Overall the food was good, the mezcal selection was great and the outdoor space was very nice. We thought the fish tacos were delicious but the fish cone extremely fishy. We had a dairy allergy in our party and ordered the salad without cheese but it came undressed, so we would have appreciated a vinaigrette substitution or warning that it would come without a dressing.
