It’s sad to see the quality of this restaurant diminish. Reliable place for simple burger, steak or chicken with fries. Last night I had the sea scallops. 3 smallish one’s for $29 with a 2 sprigs if brocollini and a swipe of carrot purée on the plate. Everything was over salted but I didn’t send it back because I was with 3 other people and it would have been disruptive for me to sit there with no food and have my friends feel bad while they ate and I didn’t. My husband and I ordered the apple cobbler dessert to share. Crust was like a rock and the few pieces of apple were over spiced. Ice cream was good. $9 for dessert is pushing it at a restaurant of this mediocre quality. Wine list is way pricey compared to cost if entrees. Almost no choices of bottles under $40. Tables for 4 are too tiny and wood laminate was coming up in places.
This used to be a favorite spot in Boulder but the menu rarely changes and the quality is dropping. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the kitchen with real culinary skill.
Really disappointing. My family has eaten there before so our expectations were reasonable. The food was just awful—over or undercooked meat should not be served at any restaurant, never mind one of this reputation. The service was lackluster at best. I don’t typically write reviews, however, this experience merited documentation. We will not be returning.
New Years Eve and Mateo was slammed.......!!! Food was - as always - truly excellent but, as we expected, the service was rushed off their feet. Good to see it packed though, as we think that this place is truly a neighborhood gem and are very glad that it appears to be thriving. Still extremely surprised at the how they get away with such elevated wine prices, even though the selection is not too bad.... but seriously!!! Will we go back? Almost certainly; though will need to gather the pennies for that next bottle of Toscana.... Oh well....... Delicious!!
Overall, we were happy with our New Year’s Eve dinner at Mateo. It was crowded so service was a bit slow but not too bad. The wine sommelier visited our table and suggested a few wines. We both liked our selections. We also ordered the charcuterie and cheese for an appetizer. The pate was excellent but the pear and fennel jam not so good. Pricey but we were happy we ordered it. My husband had the burger and loved it although the frites were too salty. I ordered the beef bourguignon and although it was tasty, it needed more sauce or mashed potatoes to dip the slightly dry beef in. Dessert was the black and white for me, which was surprisingly not very sweet but delicious. My husband got the sorbet and liked it, although the cookie that came with it had a flavor we couldn’t figure out and didn’t seem to pair well with the sorbet. Overall, we were glad we went and would return.
First the wrong burgers came from the kitchen. Then they took them back, but brought them back cold, including the "frites". And they were still missing the mushrooms. It was actually poor service that had us actually stop going to this restaurant a number of years ago (our waiter just disappeared on us.) We were giving it another go! Other reviewers have noted the inconsistency of Mateo. It has the feel of a place where no one with skin in the game (an owner) is involved. To the credit of the manager, they comped us the burgers, and gave us a gift card for future redemption. I have had good luck here for lunch. But I would risk dinner again.
Mateo is usually a steady 'good', but it seems to be moving into 'hit or miss' land. I would like to start by saying that the sommelier was fantastic, and kind of saved the experience for our small group of 4. He was charming and informative, unlike the rest of the experience. The food was too salty and our waiter obviously did not want to be there. He literally (I am not exaggerating) took plates away as we were eating them. The second time he did this, we all started to laugh, it was so ludicrous. That said, he was very skilled at his swift removal, so we were not left spilling food over the table....! No dessert menu was offered or coffee or tea, but instead he plopped the bill on the table and we think we saw him actually leave the restaurant. Overall, it was not an experience I would like to repeat or have a colleague or friend experience.
Mateo's proprietor is overly ambitious (and greedy) with reservations. The restaurant last Saturday was filled beyond capacity. The kitchen, and wait staff stretched thin, and all aspects of the dinning experience suffered because of this. I was with a party of four, (reservations made three weeks in advance) and placed at a table designed for two diners. I saw several other parties of 4 treated in the same manner. The restaurant had accepted a table of sixteen for that evening which is too large for the establishment to accommodate. The noise was deafening and unpleasant. Conversation with my dinner companions was not an option. Though the scallops I ordered were prepared expertly, the parsnip puree was cold (tip off that the kitchen was being taxed in that too many diners were being accommodated. The wine list, though nice, is over priced by a factor of two. I have been to Mateo twice in the past, and have had an enjoyable experience each of those times, in what can be a nice French Bistro atmosphere and cuisine. Perhaps, the restaurant is under new management, and wishes to run this nice place into the ground. If true, they are doing an excellent job, because I will not be going back. It is really a shame, because the employees are competent and can provide excellent service when given the proper working conditions.
Had heard good things and was looking forward to our visit. But this was a restaurant FAIL in so many ways.
Ordered mussels with grilled bread--bread was burnt and inedible. Asked for more bread--received slightly less burnt bread and charged extra for the replacement bread!
Chicken entree was so salty it hurt to eat.
Steak entree was also salty and had little flavor. Not the way to treat Colorado beef!
Was charged for the wrong and more expensive wine. Pointed this out and received pushback: "But the bartender said you drank wine at the bar." Yes, but not the wine I was charged for. Server then rolled her eyeballs at me.
Prior to this, our server never checked in or asked us how the meal was. Other servers had cleared our plates and they were much nicer--why couldn't they have been our server instead?
We were excited to try Mateo for brunch as our daughter who lived in Boulder for years but now lives on Kauai was in town to visit. Made a reservation. Restaurant wasn’t busy. “We’ll have bottomless mimosas” — “Sorry, we’re low on wine so we aren’t offering them today” .... hmmm ... “OK, we’ll have your quiche” .... “Oh, we’re out of quiche” .... hmmm .... “Is brunch new for you as a restaurant?” Ordered an apèritif spritz and it sat on the bar with the ice melting until I walked over and asked if it could be delivered to the table. Server only showed up a couple times at the table. Seemed to be plenty of people around shining bar glasses .... I guess we were a bother to them over their Sunday Brunch. Don’t think we’ll be back with the number of options along Pearl.
Second visit to Mateo. Based on our first visit our expectations were high for a foodie experience. One of our three entres was a disappointment - the duck cassoulet was bland and dry. Unfortunately, our most inexperienced diner had this dish and did not promptly tell us. Our server never checked on our meal. When the server did arrive to see about dessert and this entre info was shared for feedback it was too late to adjust. No apologies. Not sure the kitchen even got this feedback.
We've enjoyed lunch at Mateo, and decided to do an early Friday evening dinner. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment. While service was excellent, the featured rib eye steak, ordered medium rare, arrived cold and raw. To her credit, waitperson recognized this and took it back to kitchen for further cooking. The accompanying vegetables appeared to be a chef's afterthought—raw, bitter, and also under-cooked. The wine list is solid, but very overpriced without much choice in the sub-$100 category. While the menu is true to its French provincial aspirations, the prices are painful. A casual night in Boulder turned into a >$100 a plate dud. We'll be back for lunch, but until then, we'll walk west on the Mall to find better food and value.
Mateo is an excellent restaurant in many ways, with good food, a pleasant ambience, and friendly and attentive servers. It's our neighborhood place. On this occasion, however, we were not seated until nearly 30 minutes after our reservation time. The manager was courteous, and provided some free goodies, but never bothered to stop by again.
This was our first visit and it was spectacular. We sat outside at 11:30 and there was ideal shade and privacy. Bottomless Mimosas were well priced and perfectly mixed and well negotiated on refill. The brioche was perfect, eggs poached perfectly, the potatos were seasoned perfectly and they offer spicy ketchup! We also had a dessert which was served with perfect proportions. Needless to say, it was a perfect dining experience!
I've been going to Mateo for over 10 years. The food is still good - especially the fries - but the service really needs some help. Some of the staff is attentive, some confused, some just couldn't be bothered. Overall, it's just inconsistent. Wish it were more reliable...
