Happy Hour: Monday - Friday 3:00 - 6:00
Brunch: Saturday & Sunday 9:00 - 2:00
Food was great, service was very friendly, time between apps and enteees was a bit long.
Steak frites were pure gristle. Worst cut of meat. I’m pretty sure the chef is vegan.
Mateo always serves delicious steak and frites, their brunch always has tasty bites. A favorite for sure!
Noise level is outrageous! Totally unable to have a conversation. Left with headache!
Good food and service with great complimentary flavors. We had the mussels (moules provencal, pear salad and tagliatelle special. Great wine pairing also.
We'll be heading back when we visit Boulder again.
Always great food and good cocktails! Highly recommend!!
It seems like Mateo wants to be an upscale restaurant but they cram in tables to maximize seating so it gives more of a sports bar (sans TV)/gathering place type of a feel. We sat in the back by the bar - four top. The table was so small, we couldn't fit all of our plates, water glasses, and wine glasses on it without some creative maneuvering. The bottle of wine we ordered had to sit on the bar behind us because it wouldn't have fit otherwise. The staff had to constantly squeeze behind my companion's chair to get to the bar for drinks.
I've enjoyed Mateo for happy hour sitting at the bar but not sure I would choose it for dinner if I'm going to pay that price and eat at a cafe-style table with distracted service.
Terrible service. Waitress ignored us for 20 minutes after we sat. Then it took 1.5hours to get our food. Steak ordered medium was well done. Sent back to kitchen, and the next effort was so rare it was almost inedible. Not one apology from waitress. Too bad, this place used to be great.
Food was great, service was fine. Good experience.
Excellent meal, great atmosphere.
Waitress kept trying to upsell us on soup/salad/dessert/wine, but that's a very minor critique.
The steak frites are amazing as always! Great service as well.
As always, great food and great service at Mateo. It is one of the few restaurants that captures the true Mediterranean flavors without overdoing it. My favorite restaurant in Boulder for sure.
While the meal was pretty good, I wouldn't recommend dining at Mateo. The service was terrible and it was shocking how inattentive the service staff was at waiting on our table. For instance, we waited a half an hour to place our order and it took nearly as long just to order a bottle of wine.
Great Mateo burger, cheese and charcuterie - local favorite
Great service, staff was awesome. Meal was outstanding, will absolutely be back!
Service was not attentive or very friendly. The drinks were good. Food came out very all over - egg dishes came out best. Bacon was over cooked, sausage was undercooked, brioche French toast was cold so had to send back. Food tasted good, but clearly kitchen had timing issues and quality control problems. We went because reviews were good, but we were frustrated.
In town to visit our son at Boulder & wanted to take him to a nice meal on pearl street. This place was awesome - nice but not stuffy. Good was delicious & service impeccable.
Mateo is my go-to place for business lunches in Boulder - good food, discreet service and above all low noise level so that I can have a true business lunch without having to shout ;)
Mateo continues to be a quality restaurant- outside seating was suberb on a gorgeous day
Sadly, our fish was overcooked and dry. More sadly, the server didn't check with us at all until he presented the check. When we told him about the fish, instead of trying to make things right he said that the chef and sous chef were 'off' tonight, meaning not on the premises, and that they were pulling it together in the kitchen without them! An excuse! We were pretty surprised by all of this, spent a fair amount for a bad experience, food and service-wise both.
Used open table for reservations-didn’t have a table ready for us. Poor, slow service. They try to be a classy restaurant it falls short with a limited tiny menu and no specials. Not worth the money. Will not be back.
Mateo is one of my favorites. The food and service is always outstanding! We love this place, and Boulder has a lot of great places to eat, but Mateo is one of our favorites.
Wonderful lunch, as per usual. I do enjoy Mateo very much.
Fabulous, quiet lunch restaurant on a beautiful patio!
Kitchen was clearly either understaffed or having a rough night. 20 minutes for the salads and 45 for the entrees. Food was good when it came.
What happened?! This used to be my favorite restaurant. The food has gone down hill, even their standards seemed to be flat. But the worst part was the service. From the moment we walk in the vibe we got from the waiter was that we were imposing on him. One of the couples ordered Gaspacho which was pedestrian at best, over spiced and it looked like ketchup! Needless to say the waiter didn't bother to ask why they both left almost full bowls to be removed from the table. He then took our dinner order. Two of the guests ordered steak, he didn't ask how they wanted it cooked and when we managed to stop him before he ran away to instruct him on the prep, med well for one med rare the other, he again seemed irritated we imposed! The steaks we're both served med rare by the way. The restaurant was by no means full, he may have been serving 3 four tops at most. Yes, every request seemed an imposition, and the rest of the wait staff seemed annoyed as well. After ordering dessert our waiter disappeared and 20 minutes passed, no dessert - profiteroles btw - I flagged down a passing waitress and explained the situation. Again, rather than show concern and indicate she would take care of it, she simply ran by with a bit of irritation in her voice and said "I'll check". This is what my favorite restaurant for five years running, but I can tell you I won't be eating there again. It's a small place but it seems their wait staff has a big problem with their attitude. Good service on a night when the food is mediocre (chefs can have an off night) can make an average dining experience a great one and coming back. But that is no longer a possibility. I am on the hunt for a new favorite Boulder restaurant.
Overall it was a good experience however the chairs outside are really uncomfortable. The patio had a very pleasant ambiance. We had dinner and the food was good but perhaps a little pricey. We had a good time but when we got up to leave we could hardly walk. We had been sitting in those iron chairs for so long our hips and spine were sort of frozen in place.
Tasty food but could be larger portions for pasta meals.
Overall Excellent - Perfect for a quiet business lunch!
My wife and I come to Mateo during the summer months. The Patio is lovely, can enjoy conversation and the cuisine is always excellent. This time however, the service lasted the entire time which was a real treat.
I do believe the gentleman at our table was Zach. Please give him a bonus.
Loved the trout, the chicken, the mussels. Best meal I've had in awhile.
Great spot for a date! Highly recommend the cheese plate and wine to starts things off. Not to loud so you can have a good conversation. Staff was great!
Everything was great, accommodating service, friendly, attentive, wonderful gazpacho and frites were superb but the steak was over done and a bit dry and chewy like it had been sitting around waiting under a heat lamp.
It's always pleasant to have lunch at Mateo. The food is very good though not especially interesting. The atmosphere is calm and good for conversation, and the waitstaff friendly. Their cappuccino is very good.
We really enjoyed our dinner at Mateo. The food was excellent--fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, and beautiful presentation. The Chicken Frites was the best chicken I've ever eaten (honestly spectacular). The Trout Almondine was very good also and the salads were fresh and delicious. The reason I give it a 4 instead of 5 is that the service was "quirky." Everyone was super kind and gracious but we had to inquire about our bottle of wine even though we saw it sitting on the bar just waiting to be delivered to our table. We also found that they were out of a few things that we ordered--which I thought was unfortunate since we were there at about 7:30 on a Saturday night (not very late into the evening.) I would still gladly go back, but I'd make sure I had the appropriate expectations about service going in.
this is the tale of two restaurants: food was delicious; service was enthusiastic but erratic, resulting in long gaps between courses, second glass of wine, etc. also the arrangement of tables/seats in dining room is very crowded, leaving little room for staff (or diners) to move, serve, leave, etc.
Had a great cocktail at Mateo with my daughter. Was hoping for French-inspired food and, although the food was good, it was quite American. We had the trout and vegetable risotto and shared a green salad. Thought the $90 bill was steep for what we had, so probably won’t go here again. We were seated outside by the door and were bumped into several times by wait staff and customers. Not a bad experience, but not one I look forward to repeating.
1 word: AMAZING! See Liv. Food and service are spectacular!
The menu is quite limited, but among the four of us we managed to try a lot of it. The appetizers were very well prepared, especially the house made pate and the grilled bread that accompanied the mussels. We continued sharing main courses, after having filled up quite well on drinks and appetizers, and a real surprise was how wonderful the burger is. I had no intention of ordering a burger in a fine dining establishment, but I’m glad someone offered me part of one because if was outstanding. The frites were those wonderful double fried potatoes that go so well with a mayo dipping sauce. Service was impeccable, thanks in great part to our waiter, Jeremiah. He was attentive, but was also able to help us in great detail in comparing the wines we were considering. All in all, this neighborhood gem really made for a great dining experience.
We went to Mateo for our anniversary and desired a nice dinner out that had interesting food and romantic atmosphere. The menu had only 5 options for entrees and 2 of the options were not available because the restaurant ran out of them. The waitress didn't tell us they were out of the 2 items till we went to order. Those 2 items were what we were planning to order. It felt that with only 5 options they should have all options available. The waitress didn't come by to take care of us often enough so we were waiting for more water or for our check for several minutes. The manager was helping wait staff and he was very professional and helpful. The atmosphere is somewhat romantic and fun. Overall we were disappointed in the experience and would not go back.
