Consistently great food and professional service. It's a long-time favorite restaurant in Boulder!
Food was excellent as usual. Service was poor. The server did not even offer us desert.
The Food was very good. The service was great. The noise level was loud and while they have noise damping panels on the ceiling more needs to be added. My wife had the special and thought it was excellent. I had the Chicken and fries. Plenty of fries a little more chicken would have been nice. The bread was fresh and the best I have had in a local place.
The food was excellent and the service was great. The table cloth should have been changed before I had to ask after we were seated. After that we had a lovely Easter lunch. I look forward to another dining experience in the future.

We try to eat at Mateo whenever in Boulder. It’s consistently delicious.

Mateo is one of my go-tos. I’ve never had a dish I’ve been disappointed with. Highly recommend the steak frites (be sure to ask for some garlic aioli for the French fries). The brunch menu is also incredible, especially the Huevos Rancheros.
My main complaint is the noise levrl. With the bar and tables so close together, it was very difficult to hsve a conversation. The outdoor space is quieter but in cool weather not pleasant, even with heaters.
Mateo is the stalwart of the Boulder dining scene. Consistently very good, like a loyal and trusted friend, it is always there for you and never lets you down. Others come and go but when you need a port in a storm, Mateo is a welcome bolt hole.
My husband and I were enjoying a rare date night and had a gift card for Mateo. The service was excellent, we were seated promptly and the sommelier came over to assist us as soon as he saw us looking at the wine menu. The food was outstanding- we highly recommend the moules Provençal with frites, the lobster ravioli and the peppered ahi tuna. Sadly we were too full for dessert but it was a delightful meal.
The chicken and steak dishes were wonderful, as always. Wait staff friendly and efficient.
The place was mostly empty until well after 10am. This was not terrible but the music kept stopping and the silence was noticable. The food was good, although the quiche portion was quite small. The wait staff was kind and attentive.
Mateo is one of my favorite places. However the lunch menu has become boring and looks more like a breakfast menu. Our food tasted like the cook had become bored with making it. I'll wait until the menu is refreshed before returning for lunch.
The valentines special was really expensive considering the number of courses and portion sizes.
Made the drive from Denver to Boulder for Valentines. Solid cocktails and meal options!
It took an hour and 25 minutes to get our main course from when we ordered on
Valentines Date night.
Couples on both sides came in after us. One finishing dessert and the other couple gone by
the time we recieved our main course.
We had to ask what was wrong shortly before our main course finally came. Our
waiter said our food had been served to another table. This was never explanined
to us when it happened.
The waiter was unattentive and was not apologetic for the mishap leaving us
perplexed. Not a good experience.
The food was amazing; everything we ordered was excellent. The service was attentive, although we had to ask twice for a couple of things (but it could’ve been the 3-4 different people who were helping out). Everything came out in a timely manner, on Valentine’s Day, when they had two different menus. Couldn’t have been happier.
This was our third visit to Mateo in the past year. Each time we have enjoyed an outstanding meal!! The unique cocktails are always fun to try as well. Both my husband and myself agree that it is the consistently excellent food that brings us back and we shall return again. Our service was very good too, but could perhaps improve a little bit; a little more polish, I would say, would do it. I overheard one server describing the evening's specials to another table. When a second server arrived at our table, her version of the menu & specials were much abbreviated. Given that little glitch, Mateo is, perhaps, our second favorite restaurant in downtown Boulder.
Food was good, service was underwhelming. We got in and the hostess took quite a while to seat us, in part because some of the staff was busy talking to random people that seemed to be just hanging out in the restaurant. Once seated things were extremely slow, which was surprising given that the restaurant was half empty on a weekend evening-- they should have been much faster, given how few people were present. The staff is friendly, the food is good, and it's a nice restaurant. I just get the idea that the staff was distracted or disorganized.
The absolute best mussels I have ever had. All of the food was great. Excellent attentive service.
What a great find...parking was easy and restaurant quite and calm. Our service was good and the food was great. I would highly recommend!

Amazing food! Clean ingredients. I am rarely impressed with restaurant food, but Mateo met and exceeded my expectations.
Excellent food and service, only small complaint is the restaurant can get very crowded and noisy.
Mateo usually has the best burgers in town. Three of us got the burgers. They were only okay. The meat didn't taste super fresh. The fries were great. The charcuterie and cheese plates were awesome.
Super evening with my family. Fromage plate was on point, Mussels, Fries and Butternut Squash soup were all spectacular. All topped off with particularly solid service.
It was just okay food, atmosphere & service. Burger was pricey and bland. I think there are better happy Hour options in Boulder.

It’s sad to see the quality of this restaurant diminish. Reliable place for simple burger, steak or chicken with fries. Last night I had the sea scallops. 3 smallish one’s for $29 with a 2 sprigs if brocollini and a swipe of carrot purée on the plate. Everything was over salted but I didn’t send it back because I was with 3 other people and it would have been disruptive for me to sit there with no food and have my friends feel bad while they ate and I didn’t. My husband and I ordered the apple cobbler dessert to share. Crust was like a rock and the few pieces of apple were over spiced. Ice cream was good. $9 for dessert is pushing it at a restaurant of this mediocre quality. Wine list is way pricey compared to cost if entrees. Almost no choices of bottles under $40. Tables for 4 are too tiny and wood laminate was coming up in places.
This used to be a favorite spot in Boulder but the menu rarely changes and the quality is dropping. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the kitchen with real culinary skill.
Really disappointing. My family has eaten there before so our expectations were reasonable. The food was just awful—over or undercooked meat should not be served at any restaurant, never mind one of this reputation. The service was lackluster at best. I don’t typically write reviews, however, this experience merited documentation. We will not be returning.
New Years Eve and Mateo was slammed.......!!! Food was - as always - truly excellent but, as we expected, the service was rushed off their feet. Good to see it packed though, as we think that this place is truly a neighborhood gem and are very glad that it appears to be thriving. Still extremely surprised at the how they get away with such elevated wine prices, even though the selection is not too bad.... but seriously!!! Will we go back? Almost certainly; though will need to gather the pennies for that next bottle of Toscana.... Oh well....... Delicious!!
Overall, we were happy with our New Year’s Eve dinner at Mateo. It was crowded so service was a bit slow but not too bad. The wine sommelier visited our table and suggested a few wines. We both liked our selections. We also ordered the charcuterie and cheese for an appetizer. The pate was excellent but the pear and fennel jam not so good. Pricey but we were happy we ordered it. My husband had the burger and loved it although the frites were too salty. I ordered the beef bourguignon and although it was tasty, it needed more sauce or mashed potatoes to dip the slightly dry beef in. Dessert was the black and white for me, which was surprisingly not very sweet but delicious. My husband got the sorbet and liked it, although the cookie that came with it had a flavor we couldn’t figure out and didn’t seem to pair well with the sorbet. Overall, we were glad we went and would return.

Enjoyed our Christmas Eve dinner with my family. Food was great and service was excellent. We will return.
Mateo is reliably delicious and the service is excellent. Can get a trifle noisy when busy, but still an excellent fine-dining experience.
