Fabulous, quiet lunch restaurant on a beautiful patio!
Kitchen was clearly either understaffed or having a rough night. 20 minutes for the salads and 45 for the entrees. Food was good when it came.
What happened?! This used to be my favorite restaurant. The food has gone down hill, even their standards seemed to be flat. But the worst part was the service. From the moment we walk in the vibe we got from the waiter was that we were imposing on him. One of the couples ordered Gaspacho which was pedestrian at best, over spiced and it looked like ketchup! Needless to say the waiter didn't bother to ask why they both left almost full bowls to be removed from the table. He then took our dinner order. Two of the guests ordered steak, he didn't ask how they wanted it cooked and when we managed to stop him before he ran away to instruct him on the prep, med well for one med rare the other, he again seemed irritated we imposed! The steaks we're both served med rare by the way. The restaurant was by no means full, he may have been serving 3 four tops at most. Yes, every request seemed an imposition, and the rest of the wait staff seemed annoyed as well. After ordering dessert our waiter disappeared and 20 minutes passed, no dessert - profiteroles btw - I flagged down a passing waitress and explained the situation. Again, rather than show concern and indicate she would take care of it, she simply ran by with a bit of irritation in her voice and said "I'll check". This is what my favorite restaurant for five years running, but I can tell you I won't be eating there again. It's a small place but it seems their wait staff has a big problem with their attitude. Good service on a night when the food is mediocre (chefs can have an off night) can make an average dining experience a great one and coming back. But that is no longer a possibility. I am on the hunt for a new favorite Boulder restaurant.
Overall it was a good experience however the chairs outside are really uncomfortable. The patio had a very pleasant ambiance. We had dinner and the food was good but perhaps a little pricey. We had a good time but when we got up to leave we could hardly walk. We had been sitting in those iron chairs for so long our hips and spine were sort of frozen in place.
Tasty food but could be larger portions for pasta meals.
Overall Excellent - Perfect for a quiet business lunch!
My wife and I come to Mateo during the summer months. The Patio is lovely, can enjoy conversation and the cuisine is always excellent. This time however, the service lasted the entire time which was a real treat.
I do believe the gentleman at our table was Zach. Please give him a bonus.
Loved the trout, the chicken, the mussels. Best meal I've had in awhile.
Great spot for a date! Highly recommend the cheese plate and wine to starts things off. Not to loud so you can have a good conversation. Staff was great!
Everything was great, accommodating service, friendly, attentive, wonderful gazpacho and frites were superb but the steak was over done and a bit dry and chewy like it had been sitting around waiting under a heat lamp.
It's always pleasant to have lunch at Mateo. The food is very good though not especially interesting. The atmosphere is calm and good for conversation, and the waitstaff friendly. Their cappuccino is very good.
We really enjoyed our dinner at Mateo. The food was excellent--fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, and beautiful presentation. The Chicken Frites was the best chicken I've ever eaten (honestly spectacular). The Trout Almondine was very good also and the salads were fresh and delicious. The reason I give it a 4 instead of 5 is that the service was "quirky." Everyone was super kind and gracious but we had to inquire about our bottle of wine even though we saw it sitting on the bar just waiting to be delivered to our table. We also found that they were out of a few things that we ordered--which I thought was unfortunate since we were there at about 7:30 on a Saturday night (not very late into the evening.) I would still gladly go back, but I'd make sure I had the appropriate expectations about service going in.
this is the tale of two restaurants: food was delicious; service was enthusiastic but erratic, resulting in long gaps between courses, second glass of wine, etc. also the arrangement of tables/seats in dining room is very crowded, leaving little room for staff (or diners) to move, serve, leave, etc.
Had a great cocktail at Mateo with my daughter. Was hoping for French-inspired food and, although the food was good, it was quite American. We had the trout and vegetable risotto and shared a green salad. Thought the $90 bill was steep for what we had, so probably won’t go here again. We were seated outside by the door and were bumped into several times by wait staff and customers. Not a bad experience, but not one I look forward to repeating.
1 word: AMAZING! See Liv. Food and service are spectacular!
The menu is quite limited, but among the four of us we managed to try a lot of it. The appetizers were very well prepared, especially the house made pate and the grilled bread that accompanied the mussels. We continued sharing main courses, after having filled up quite well on drinks and appetizers, and a real surprise was how wonderful the burger is. I had no intention of ordering a burger in a fine dining establishment, but I’m glad someone offered me part of one because if was outstanding. The frites were those wonderful double fried potatoes that go so well with a mayo dipping sauce. Service was impeccable, thanks in great part to our waiter, Jeremiah. He was attentive, but was also able to help us in great detail in comparing the wines we were considering. All in all, this neighborhood gem really made for a great dining experience.
We went to Mateo for our anniversary and desired a nice dinner out that had interesting food and romantic atmosphere. The menu had only 5 options for entrees and 2 of the options were not available because the restaurant ran out of them. The waitress didn't tell us they were out of the 2 items till we went to order. Those 2 items were what we were planning to order. It felt that with only 5 options they should have all options available. The waitress didn't come by to take care of us often enough so we were waiting for more water or for our check for several minutes. The manager was helping wait staff and he was very professional and helpful. The atmosphere is somewhat romantic and fun. Overall we were disappointed in the experience and would not go back.
Limited menu, but tasty meals. I was surprised at 7 pm on a Saturday night , they ran out of steak. Not much choice if you don't eat meat. Super nice hostess and waitstaff.
We had eaten here before and had a good experience, which is why we came back. However, on the Tuesday night we ate there recently, the waitress was wholly indifferent, Inattentive and seemed preoccupied with chatting with friends sitting at tables on the outside patio as opposed to tending to her customers who were inside the restaurant. The restaurant was not short staffed. The waitress was very very disappointing. Ruined the night for us, frankly. That said, the food was very good.
Wonderful food and service. Get excited and go to this place. Monday only they Neopolitan pizza baked in a bee hive oven that people were raving about, making me wish I got one. I got the pan fried chicken, boneless except for the wing section and skin on. Perfectly cooked, crispy skin and moist meat and the butter cream sauce it came in was superb. Finally the black and white dessert may be the best dessert in Boulder. It a moist brownie over a unique buttery sauce with a small creamer brûlée type vanilla cup of deliciousness on the side.
We went here for breakfast and went with our servers recommendations. The french toast was amazing, I would highly recommend. It was quiet and perfect for a date night or dinner out with a few friends. Will make sure to visit again next time we are in town.
This is one of our favorite places. The flavors are so authentic and subtile, it captures the European vibe very well in its dishes. Would certainly recommend.
We had a 6:30 reservation for 2. We were seated immediately and served water. NO ONE came to our table after that. We waited for 15 minutes. NO ONE stopped by. We left.
To whom it might concern,
I am a resident of Boulder for over 50 years. And I have patronized the Mateo for many years. I made reservations for Tuesday July 24, 2018 6:30 pm On arrival I was greeted cordially by the hostess and we asked to sit outside. Not many people in the restaurant. We notice the people who came after us were waited on first but we let that go. (a glitch maybe)
We gave our order and of course everyone got their food but us. Finally parts of our food arrived. we waited patiently for our entree our waitress assume we were ready to leave and we asked where was the rest of our order. She replied, "she would check!" The staff acknowledged it was wrote up but not followed up. The entree we didn't have to pay for because it was so late. We didn't fume, everyone seemed considerate but the eating experience was bad. We did leave our waitress her 20% Hopefully things can improve.
Thanks for listening,
Love the Monday pizza from Laudisio's old wood burning pizza oven. We got a last minute reservation and were happy to be there but it was very very very noisy--"energetic" is a disingenuous rating--it's too loud to have a normal conversation. The noisy crowd also meant we got erratic service: 15 minute wait for a glass of wine, all the food arrived at once, etc. So the ambiance suffered. Happy hour is a better value. I've gone to Mateo's for decades but the noise has become impossible.
I love coming here. The specials never disappoint, the mainstays are always good, too, the wine list is delicious, and the vibe is upbeat. Their new pizza night was a surprise. I haven't tried the pizza yet but it sure is popular.
Saturday was my 4th visit and Mateo may have slipped a bit. Although service remains excellent, the wine selection very good and the food also very good, it is pricey for small quantities of food.
Celebrating my daughter's 12th birthday. The team at Mateo went out of there way to make it a special occasion. Great food, great dribks and great service.
We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The last time I had dinner there I thought it was just so-so, but this time it was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be going back again! My only complaint is that the portions were small for the price. A fistful portion of Risotto was $24 - expensive but very tasty.
It was wonderful!!! If we lived here, this would be one of our go to places. Had the chicken dish which was perfect. Everything about the place was terrific.
Absolutely fantastc service - but more important were the wonderfully presented and super savory dishes. The Moules Provencal appetizer (mussels) were incredible (the sauce could have been an amazing soup). I rarely order chicken at restaurants, but their pan seared Poulet Frites is now on my favorites list. The trout and also seared ahi were also dishes I'd now recommend to friends.
This is one of our favorite Boulder restaurants. We usually begin with a signature cocktail (excellent), and the cheese plate (always great selections), and then we enjoy a main course. I’m a vegetarian, and although there’s usually only one vegetarian selection on the official menu, it’s always a delicious choice, and it’s never the boring pasta primavera of other restaurants with one vegetarian option. Each bite is to savor, so make sure you have time to eat slowly to thoroughly enjoy the whole experience.
Incredible service!! Our waiter is one of the best servers I've ever had. We had asked for accommodations and they were honored and we felt respected due to the waiter's kindness. They are able to honor gluten free and dairy free requests. Yay!
Second time to Mateo, and once we were seated, everything was great. The only odd thing was that us and 2 other parties showed up for 6:45 reservations, and no table were available. They said there were early diners who stayed a long time, but seems to me, that for 6:45 reservations, they simply tried to snake a few people in without enough time to have the tables available. But we did get a free drink and were seated by 7:15. Other than that, no complaints!
Lovely location for a Father's Day celebration. We went the night before so we could enjoy the delicious dinner menu. Each of us had a different favorite, which is always a good sign.
Great atmosphere. We’ve wanted to try this place for years and finally got around to it. Sat out back on the patio... very nice. Service was slow. Took 15 minutes or more to get our drink order. Waitress seemed confused or on something. Disappeared a lot. Back Walters we’re excellent (should be main servers!). Food was good. Not in any hurry to return.
I think that prices have gone up and portions have gotten smaller. Too bad. The pasta dish had very little pasta. The chicken was outstanding as usual.
Sat on the patio and had a late lunch with a friend. Service and atmosphere was excellent. Food was also excellent. I thought prices were good too. I'd go back for dinner in a second but I imagine it would be a bit more expensive.
This was my first time ever to Mateo after living in Boulder for 20 years. I had a wonderful meal and the ambience was perfect! Mateo is now in my top five places to go in downtown Boulder.
