I have tried Mateo a few times, even when it first opened in Boulder nearly 20 years ago. I leave disappointed each time. I clearly forget and go back, and others must enjoy it, or it couldn’t have survived in Boulder this long. The food is expensive for what is served, and all my vegetables were way undercooked. Even the roasted potatoes. They were absolutely hard and crunchy on the inside. It appears all the vegetables were browned over fire, but not on long enough to even partially cook them. Shrimp dish was anemic and scant for the price point. Again, that said, some people like it here, or it wouldn’t have lasted in Boulder. I just won’t be back, and hopefully this review will remind me of that when I’ve forgotten again in a few years.
Mateo used to be amazing. The food was delightful, beautifully plated, etc. Now, the food is ok-ish. My steak was overcooked and had a weird texture. My frites were served lukewarm. The bernaise sauce was just in a bowl on the plate, with a skin on it. The steak frites came with a salad, but the server didn't tell me that it did when I ordered another salad so I ended up with two. The cocktails were just ok. I didn't even drink half of my second one. This was probably our last visit. Based upon how empty the restaurant was, I'm guessing it's days are numbered.
Mateo has changed drastically for the worse since our last visit a month ago. What happened? Staff is different and not so good. Service slow. Food selection limited; and same dishes not as good.
Food has been better in the past. Slow service. They were out of certain wines and Titos vodka, and even asparagus. The mussels did not have their signature anise flavor.
The food was cold. Service distract. No welcome. No recommended. Nothing special.
Eggs florentine usually has spinach. this had 2 small sprigs of broccolini. Not enough vegetable for what I thought. It was on brioche which was either toasted and left to sit,or stale--it was hard, either way. Fried potatoes were like small square bricks. Restaurant was empty, so server wasn't busy. We still had to ask for water. No chai latte, which is pretty standard now in most restaurants. They did have regular hot tea, and coffee latte. Reading online, I had expected more.
The servers were polite and helpful, but rather than the dinner arriving as one would wish (and as we asked) with the appetizer coming first, we'd barely taken a bite of the appetizer before the salad and entree both arrived crowding the table with too big plates and rushing the dinner. The restaurant wasn't crowded so there seemed to be no reason for the hurry.
Great food, interesting wine program. Service was friendly and efficient. Nice ambience and a patio!!
I never write reviews, but after the awful experience I had last night, I feel compelled to. Even though I had a reservation, it took 30 minutes for me to order, and only my husband got his food. When we spoke to one of the servers, their response was, “that’s your problem for ordering from a hostess.” He was incredibly rude. I left in tears - the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. I doubt this restaurant will make it another month. For a better French restaurant in Boulder, go to the Brasserie.
Food and service were mediocre, nice atmosphere on the porch.
My friend and I looked forward to dinner at Mateo's on Friday night. I wanted a vodka martini and she wanted gluten free vodka with soda and lime. They didn't have any gluten free vodka and basically didn't even have vodka for my martini. It was very disappointing.
We stayed-I settled on a glass of wine.
When the bill came at the end, her dinner was overcharged by $11.00 and my wine wasn't comp'd or discounted. They corrected the bill on her meal after we pointed it out.
Just so so so.Food was fine but uninspired.
We have been going there from time to for years and it is always the same.
Decent food but not great.
About the best thing you can order is the Moules.
We had a wonderful dinner at Mateo! The food was delicious, and our server, Matt, was wonderful - kind, knowledgeable, helpful and he gave us the perfect amount of attention. Highly recommend!
The Mateo burger and fries were delicious - highlight of the meal. The Fruit de Mer was disappointing - the entire dish lacked seasoning and the carrots were undercooked. The asparagus risotto was good, as were the cheese tasting and the black and white dessert. But the only dish that I would return to the restaurant for is the burger and fries. Our waiter was attentive and informative, but told us that the items that we ordered during the last few minutes of happy hour would be happy hour prices and the bill did not reflect that so we had to ask for it to be fixed. Overall, I'd probably give the restaurant one more try but I wasn't blown away.
This is one of our favorite places to eat. Last night, nothing came out of the kitchen right. The pate wasn’t set, the mussels burned the server’s hand, the white wine was served at room temperature, the steak frites came out cold, the chicken came out without the requested sides, and the ahi came out room temperature (who wants to eat room temperature fish?) and the accompanying potatoes were so charred I had to spit out my food. There was no apology or recompense for our experience. After requesting frites to substitute for the potatoes, they came out with no seasoning. Only upon request did we have a salt shaker slammed down on our table.
We had a very nice lunch at Mateo. They were kind enough to let us sit there for quite awhile and visit with our friend. The food was good, the staff was very friendly and efficient and the ambiance was just fine. We would return.
We sat outside and just as we were ordering our meal there was a strong smell of trash wafting through so we moved ourselves to another table. Our table was near the entrance to the outdoor seating , near the kitchen and the music blaring out of there was like rap music. Not conducive to a nice evening out for dinner on the patio. The food was not good considering the price of the food. Vegetables were hard and undercooked. First time at Mateo and I wouldn’t choose to dine there again
Sat outside on a beautiful summer evening. Accommodating of dietary restrictions. Generous portions. Attentive and genuine service.
We made the staff aware ahead of time that we were celebrating a birthday, and even after I brought it up when we arrived and put it in our digital confirmation, there was no mention of it or celebratory cake/ice cream.
The server was rude an clearly didn’t want to be there.
They forgot to bring out half of my father in laws dinner, and when he brought it up, it was a HUGE inconvenience to them.
Too loud- it was hard to hear anyone else at the table.
We had a reservation, but when we arrived they said the restaurant was closed because of an issue, so we were in troubles since it was friday evening and all good places were already full. The owner could have made a call to inform us, but he didn't. Very disappointing!
Gem of a restaurant! We love Mateo and try to go each time we are in boulder! Love the patio too!
Family brunch food and service was great! Thank you.
Been going here for years. Food is just so so now. Mateo burger was over cooked. $10 salad had nothing in it but greens and a few beet pieces. The mussels is usually one of our favorite appetizers but the mussels were small and the sauce was bland. . The chicken was pretty blah. We’re going to pass on Mateo until they up their game.
Mateo is not on our Top-20 list of restaurants in the Boulder area; however, we like to go there from time to time in the summer and dine on the patio. Boulder needs more garden-like patio restaurants! The meal was okay and the servers were friendly, attentive and responsive. We both started with the Gazpacho, which was very good. For her main, my wife had the Chicken and Frites, which she enjoyed - especially the sauce. I had the Fromage board, which was okay. Mateo continues to overprice their drinks, but I guess that's their strategy since they've done so for the 11 years we've lived here. I had a couple glasses of a unremarkable Jean Michael Viognier, not worth the $15.00/glass price, but my wife loved her "High Thyme" cocktail. We'll probably continue to visit Mateo periodically, primarily because we really enjoy the relaxed feeling of dining on their patio.
The food was really good however we had terrible service. We did not get our main course for over an hour and the manager offered to comp our food. The waitress and the manager did not check in with us after the mistake happened to see if we were enjoying the food.
Always good experience at Mateo. I haven’t been there for a while and the price seemed too high for lunch, but the food was good!
Chef Jansen has created Mateo's menu and atmosphere with his own personal touch in a manner of the highest quality in food and service.
I would highly recommend Mateo to anyone.🤗
The food, drinks, and service was very good. Glad we tried the place. The price will keep us from going back often.
Mateo was great per usual. Really good food and service. I had the Steak Frites and my wife had Lobster Raviolo. Both recommended.
Five of us had lunch and everyone enjoyed their choices, especially the new salad with grilled scallops calamari and shrimp. I’m looking forward to next time!
A special lunch with a new friend. The service and food was wonderful.
Delicious food and wonderful service. I will absolutely be returning and would recommend to anyone visiting Boulder.
Was hopeful to have an enjoyable brunch at this cute restaurant. The ambiance was pretty good. We actually sat on the patio. The table was tiny. Barely big enough to have a water glass and coffee cup with four people sitting at the table.
Food was below average; nothing special. I ordered the french toast and it dry and boring. Not worth the calories. One good thing was the coffee as it was a nice brand that I don't recall.
Would not go here again.
As always the food and service at Mateo was excellent. Drove up from Littleton for a Father's Day brunch that was a delight. Hannah (sp?) was terrific. Friendly, professional and engaging.
We had a great happy hour meal of the cheese plate, the mixte salad, "Moules and frites", mussels and French fries. Service was great, and as the restaurant filled, the nose level went from quiet to moderate by about 6:30.
Matteo never disappoints. Every time I go, I commit to exploring other places because there are so many options in Boulder. Still, if I want a lovely, quiet and consistently enjoyable dining experience, I know I can count on Mateo. Merci!
Our dining experience turned out to be quite good: good service, good food. Our first seating was by the front door and the noise level was too great for the conversations we were wanting, but the staff kindly moved us outside where we could talk more easily.
Good bartender, prices seem to have gone up
