The food was very good. 3 of the 4 tapas we tried were excellent.
food was very good... some unusual offerings... seats were very uncomfortable
Mateo is one of my favorite downtown Durham eateries. It is truly unique and so good. Tapas is on tap here........small sharable plates with so much variety, it will amaze you. The service is always great and the food comes quick. Everything is good! Lots of specials too. Reservations definitely recommended
Great variety of authentic tapas!
Food was good, not great. We ordered five items from the menu and everything was brought at one time to a very small table which was very crowded. Our dinner plates became filled with sauce from our first dish and it became difficult to place other items on the dish. Situation was not recognized by the server and we had to go find extra plates. Felt a bit rushed quite honestly. Was quite expensive and really would’ve expected a better experience especially considering the cost and other reviews which were quite favorable.
Fantastic night! We came in from out of town to see a show at the DPAC. We told our waitress we were going and she made sure our service was extremely punctual. We had drinks before at the bar...fabulous Sangria! The food was awesome and priced spot on! We will go back next time we’re in town!
Early dinner before show at DPAC and it was great. John took excellent care of us. He made wonderful suggestions for wine and food and both were spot on. The service was great, food was creative and very yummy. Would highly recommend - great overall experience.
Food and service wonderful!!
Underwhelming. We came because we heard it was better than Tabernas price-wise. This is true. However, the meal selection was boring for a place such nice decor. The Ferdinand (drink) was excellent; best part of the meal hands down. Brisket was the most expensive item and was smaller than half of my palm. Calamari was pretty good. The arroz frito was chinese restauranty. Again, not interesting. Its supoosed to be Spanish with a southern flair and it's a fine enough place but the food just wasn't memorable.
Have eaten at Mother & Sons and Vin Rouge both were EXCELLENT....this was sub par. Waitress told us to take a picture of the specials board because there were to many to discuss. She seemed genuinely disinterested in being a waitress.
Special of the night Flounder was three inches deep in oil....the Dates were good.
Food and service were on-point, as usual. Part of our group are vegetarians as was our server so she was very helpful. She also recommended a great wine. Brandi was her name, I believe.
Mateo never disappoints! The food and ambiance are great.
The plates were wonderfully presented and delicious!
Mateo was great. The food was incredible and even dishes that seemed discordant were extremely well balanced and made sense. Would highly recommend this place as a great dining place for the Raleigh Durham area
Great food but loud ambience
My husband and I had a wonderful time. I’m vegetarian and there were plenty of options. The hostess was accommodating, and our server was amazing with recommendations. Food came out at the perfect times, and that bread is amazing!
Eating at Mateo is one of my favorite kings tondo in Durham! The atmosphere, service and wine list are amazing. The food is AMAZING. Whenever I go out, I make it a rule to never eat at the same place. There is only one exception. Mateo. I will always choose Mateo when in Durham.
Nice ambience, good choice for a quick dinner before a DPAC evening event.
The tapas are amazing. This of our favorite restaurants. It’s VERY busy and noisy downstairs. But if you can get a seat upstairs it’s much better.
This is consistently the best food in Durham. Their regular menu is always a pleasure, but it's the myriad and ever changing specials which are the true highlight! I've always believed that it's the sauce that truly makes a meal and Mateo has the best sauces in town. Love dining here!
Excellent overall experience. The food was fabulous but the service was a little slow and they sent our food to the wrong table once. I would still go back however as it was really good food. The manager looked after us after we talked with her about the service so all in all a great restaurant.
We were able to experience a dinner that brought back memories of our trip to Spain at the end of August. Ole'.
Great experience! Food, service, and atmosphere were all great b
Awesome food and service! Very attentive and helpful with all questions about menu and drinks. Definitely worth a return visit soon!
Excellent! Food was terrific and reminded me of a visit to Madrid a few years ago. Just a short walk to DPAC so very convenient if going to an event there. Highly recommend .
The only drawback I find for Mateo is the noise level. At times it can be difficult to carry on a conversation without shouting. The food is always outstanding!
I'm super disappointed. I wanted to love this place like the other tapas restaurant in Durham but this was not good. We had the Chicharrones and they weren't bad probably the best thing we had though. We also ordered the Iberico jamon which should be amazing but somehow was really dry. None of that nice oiliness that should be on the it so I'm not real sure how that happens? We also ordered the Gambas and Marrow. The Gambas was really small even for tapas and just ok. The Marrow was good but the Oxtail on top was just too much. The oxtail also tasted like it had been caramelized a little too long. All in all not great especially when Taberna is right around the corner and is amazing, save yourself the disappointment and just go there.
Food amazing as always!
We ordered from the servers recommendations. Everything was delicious. Loved the cocktails.
The calamari was rather overdone-was cold and too crispy. Also it would be nice to not have all the tapas dishes served all at once as they become cold and not very enjoyable.
The serrano ham plate was very very dry like it was cut ahead of time and not served immediately. I realize that this ham is dry but not to the point that it was tough.
This wasn't our first visit to Mateo, but sadly it was our last as we are moving out of the area. However, it was by far our best experience as we had a great server. It is one of the better places in Durham if not the best. I also highly recommend going to Mother and Sons next door!
We enjoyed Mateo and had great service while we were there. The food comes out particularly fast. My expectations were set high due to the fact that this restaurant always ranks among the best in Durham, and I wasn’t blown away by the food, or any aspect of it. I don’t have any complaints, I just didn’t find it to live up to its online reputation.
Meeting with old friend
Outstanding as always!
Great experience! Food was fun and fantastic and we tried a lot of different things. The only thing I did not like is how loud the music was- impossible to have a decent conversation. Had to yell.
Service was weaker than we've experienced in the past.
Overall, I am impressed and very much enjoyed the food. BUT, it can get very pricey. I understand that this is a Tapas Bar, but adding a few entrees would certainly help...because the food is just that good.
Mateo is my absolute favorite restaurant in Durham. The food never disappoints, and the ambience is so chic. I even got to sit upstairs this time! I took my brother’s girlfriend who was in town from NYC and she was so impressed with how it felt like an NYC restaurant, but the prices were so much more reasonable.
Service, food and atmosphere was great. We had a party of 6 to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Mateo offered a wonderful venue to casually enjoy the evening.
Best food and environment ever . The service was a little slow, but overall was fantastic experience.
