We found this restaurant shortly after having visited Spain. The food is very authentic to Spanish cuisine and delicious. For this visit to Mateos, we brought our daughter who was celebrating her 21st birthday. We tried a lot of tapas, all of which were terrific. She loved it and especially loved the sangria and the vegetarian options.
Sat downstairs so it's a little noisier but my husband uses a walker so he can't get upstairs. They were very accommodating. The food was fabulous and the water was excellent and helpful without hovering
Absolutely amazing as usual!!
Mateo always pleases. Had a group of 6 so we were able to order a wide array of dishes. As always, my favorite is the egg with crispy manchego--simple and so delicious--but we enjoyed everything. Food's slightly pretentious (I say that lovingly) and you pay for the quality and creativity. (Some portion sizes feel a little meager, like the 2 scallop dish we had.) Great service and meal overall.
We went with a couple of friends who were visiting from out of town. We loved all of the options, and tried a good mix of vegetarian, meat and seafood dishes. They were all wonderful. We debated which ones were our favorites. We all had different favorites, but agreed that we enjoyed every single dish! One thing to know is that it can get pretty loud downstairs, so if you want a more quiet setting, I would recommend asking for a table upstairs.
Just got into town to spend time with my sons. My one son just moved to Durham and has been trying different places. This is a place that we will definitely go back to!
So delicious! We all loved it (including my not very picky teen & tween kids)!
Perfect for double date/groups so you can try almost everything on the menu. Portions are small because they're tapas and a bit pricey for Durham but worth it if you don't go every week/weekend! Get the chicken fried chicken!
It can be hard to order off the standard menu when there are always so many incredible specials.
Amazing food, great service. Can’t wait to come back!
Second time there, both experiences have been great. As a tapes restaurant, every plate can be exciting and in most cases unique as well.
It's a great place to try things you would never think of trying as an entree. Every plate we had [there were 5 of us so we had lots to share] was excellent.
Service is excellent, new plates show up when thy are supposed to show up, hot from the kitchen or cold if it is supposed to be cold and previous plates cleared away.
Matoe's is not quiet, rather appropriately noisy and vibrant.
Food was fantastic! Service was awesome. Great place for my niece’s birthday celebration. Parking can be difficult, so go early. It’s worth it. Make reservations. Can’t wait to go back.
The tapas were delicious, the place is nice with excellent service and expensive.
I love this restaurant! I take any chance I get to impresss my out-of-town guests at Mateos! Great food with vegetarian options and wonderful service!
We have always loved this place. The food and service are always divine. Tonight, even though we had eaten here many times before, we discovered they had an upstairs dining room! The only thing we didn't like was that it could be really loud. I mean REALLY loud. I checked "quiet" in my review this time. If you ask to be seated upstairs this is a perfect dining experience. I have never been disappointed in a single dish and the cocktails are superb.
Food quality has degraded.
I took my adult daughter to Mateo while I was in town visiting her. We wanted to get a quick dinner before meeting up with a larger group. Our reservation was at opening time, so quickly seated. We we're happily fed and on our way in under an hour! We have travelled abroad, and my children have some time in Spain. It's always fun re-experiencing real Spanish food.
We had a 9:15 reservation made four days in advance. We were sat at our table at 9:50. We were told it was because no tables were available but having worked in the industry it was evident that sections were closed and the manager had already cut servers. The food was ok. It’s very rich food if that is what you are looking for. Ambience was great upstairs but way too noisy downstairs. I would consider it again for a late night snack but will not do dinner at a place where my reservation is not respected.
Wonderful meal and tremendous value for the price.
The environment and food were amazing and very reminiscent of our honeymoon in Barcelona. Every dish we had was great and we will definitely be coming back on our next date night.
Lovely! One of my favorite places in Durham!
Mateo is always amazing. Great service, their specials are fun and delicious. Their cocktails are also super good! Mateo never disappoints and if you have anything bad to say about the food or the environment, get over yourself!
The food was very good. 3 of the 4 tapas we tried were excellent.
food was very good... some unusual offerings... seats were very uncomfortable
Mateo is one of my favorite downtown Durham eateries. It is truly unique and so good. Tapas is on tap here........small sharable plates with so much variety, it will amaze you. The service is always great and the food comes quick. Everything is good! Lots of specials too. Reservations definitely recommended
Great variety of authentic tapas!
Food was good, not great. We ordered five items from the menu and everything was brought at one time to a very small table which was very crowded. Our dinner plates became filled with sauce from our first dish and it became difficult to place other items on the dish. Situation was not recognized by the server and we had to go find extra plates. Felt a bit rushed quite honestly. Was quite expensive and really would’ve expected a better experience especially considering the cost and other reviews which were quite favorable.
Fantastic night! We came in from out of town to see a show at the DPAC. We told our waitress we were going and she made sure our service was extremely punctual. We had drinks before at the bar...fabulous Sangria! The food was awesome and priced spot on! We will go back next time we’re in town!
We went before a show at DPAC a couple of weeks ago. Mateo is one of my favorite restaurants in Durham and I was very excited to bring my boyfriend who had never been before. I have never been more disappointed in the service at a restaurant. Our server forgot about us several times and then began to avoid us after his mistakes. We had to find another server just to get our check paid in time for the show. I understand that it is human to forget things - as a past server I am very forgiving of this. But we never received an apology, never had a manager come to check on us, and were neglected in the corner of the restaurant. We left our comments with the manager on the way out and received an apology from her which was nice, but too little too late.
All this being said, I still love Mateo and all of our food was excellent (once we actually received it). I am hoping this was an isolated incident and that others don’t experience the same thing. Unfortunately, my view of them has been a little tarnished and not sure I will be back any time soon.
Early dinner before show at DPAC and it was great. John took excellent care of us. He made wonderful suggestions for wine and food and both were spot on. The service was great, food was creative and very yummy. Would highly recommend - great overall experience.
Food and service wonderful!!
Underwhelming. We came because we heard it was better than Tabernas price-wise. This is true. However, the meal selection was boring for a place such nice decor. The Ferdinand (drink) was excellent; best part of the meal hands down. Brisket was the most expensive item and was smaller than half of my palm. Calamari was pretty good. The arroz frito was chinese restauranty. Again, not interesting. Its supoosed to be Spanish with a southern flair and it's a fine enough place but the food just wasn't memorable.
Have eaten at Mother & Sons and Vin Rouge both were EXCELLENT....this was sub par. Waitress told us to take a picture of the specials board because there were to many to discuss. She seemed genuinely disinterested in being a waitress.
Special of the night Flounder was three inches deep in oil....the Dates were good.
Food and service were on-point, as usual. Part of our group are vegetarians as was our server so she was very helpful. She also recommended a great wine. Brandi was her name, I believe.
Mateo never disappoints! The food and ambiance are great.
The plates were wonderfully presented and delicious!
Mateo was great. The food was incredible and even dishes that seemed discordant were extremely well balanced and made sense. Would highly recommend this place as a great dining place for the Raleigh Durham area
Great food but loud ambience
My husband and I had a wonderful time. I’m vegetarian and there were plenty of options. The hostess was accommodating, and our server was amazing with recommendations. Food came out at the perfect times, and that bread is amazing!
