We love this restaurant and atmosphere ! It’s esoecially good for large parties.
The service and ambiance were good. The food was not very good. My husband ordered a hamburger well done. It came out medium rare to rare. He didn't send it back because the first half was just pink inside which he can eat but the last quarter of it was rare. It was charred on the outside. Also the tomatoes on it were stewed tomatoes not sliced tomatoes which made it soggy. The burger itself was very greasy. We ordered 3 salads and 2 pizzas (plus the burger) for five adults. It was plenty of food. The pizza was okay but not great. The spicy pizza no longer has smoked gouda cheese so not as tasty. The caesar salad was huge pieces of lettuce instead of being chopped. The other two salads (spinach/salmon and apple/pear) were good. We hadn't been in a couple of years. We didn't love the place a couple of years ago but thought maybe it had improved. But unfortunately it has not. We will not return.
We had a great match box experience
Nothing too good or bad, just mediocre at best. Food wasn’t anything to brag about in my book book- had the Sunday brunch.
Sit outside if you can! The patio & bar are lively & far away enough that you don’t feel you’re sitting on Rockville Pike.
Food is ALWAYS good & the servers are knowledgeable & attentive.
food was good, as usual. predictable. chicken was crispy & potatoes were pretty good too.
Server was very friendly, when she came. but no one greeted us right away, then she came and took orders. took forever to get a drink--she said bar tender forgot us. then she seemed to roam around, but not really be available. don't need or want someone to hover around, but check in periodically to ask if we want anything, and for drinks to be delivered pretty quickly.
setting was nice & fairly quiet so enjoyed chance to talk and hear my partner.
We were frequent guests at Matchbox in Rockville. The location has gone downhill over the years. The food consistency has declined. And the service has consistently been terrible. On this particular visit, the server spilled water all over the table. Then just left because he was embarrassed. He sent another server to bring us new waters and dry the table off. Then he showed up and said he didn't want to show his face because he was so embarrassed. He finally came back after we were almost done eating and said he had a long day and was handing us over to another server. At that point, we just wanted the check. No apologies, just embarrassment. Not professional at all. Disappointed. Will really think before we return there.
Our Waiter "Manny" was outstanding! He was friendly and was well informed about the Menu and offered suggestions to our party. He was very attentive to our group and was humorous in his demeanor. Our Hostess assisted us in getting a group picture at the end of our visit. Thanks Matchbox!
Overall good value. Food is always very good, but the reception and service folks can be inconsistent and sometimes slow, even during non-peak hours. That said, it's still a very good value and enjoyable.
Went with a few friends to celebrate a birthday and had a wonderful time. Our waiter was wonderful and gave us great recommendations for food and drinks. Highly reccommend
I am a regular and the food is always great. We were offered a table in a dark corner of the bar area. We asked to change and the hostess was very rude so we made the best of it. The Bartender was also the waiter. Je tried but was not really able to offer adequate service. My wife had to go to the bar to get a drink refull.
I have been to this location many times, and the food is always great. I've only ever had on mix-up on food delivery over the years. However, this past time the service was terrible. I felt badly for the server, as she has no training whatsoever. Didn't know how to open a bottle of wine, didn't follow up after delivery of food, forgot about requests we made for pizza toppings (pepper flakes, cheese, etc.), didn't ask if anyone wanted coffee with their dessert (yes, she left the table before we could even tell her we did). I really call out the manager and management for putting her is that situation. We still tipped her well, as it really wasn't her fault. She had a great personality, but not a clue how to service a table.
We had to wait for drinks for over than 20 minutes . Then someone took the order and brought only a half of the order. Then a different person came and took the order again.
Margherita pizza was to die for. Pear apple salad was so good!
I would still (just barely) recommend Matchbox, but with a big caveat: Just because you make a reservation doesn't mean you'll get seated at that time. Twice now, we have been seated almost 30 minutes after our reservation time. You show up and say you have a reservation, and you're handed the same buzzer that everyone else gets, as you sit among 50 or more people waiting for tables. Granted, those of us with a reservation got buzzed within about 30 minutes, while others without a reservation were told it would be 45 minutes. BUT WHAT IS THE POINT OF TAKING RESERVATIONS IF YOU DON'T OR CAN'T HONOR THEM? We make reservations, particularly on weekend evenings, precisely because we don't want to wait so long for a table, particularly with children or elderly relatives. We will try Matchbox one more time. If this happens again, we will stop going and will no longer recommend it to friends. With a menu that's not terribly creative or unique and food that is fair-to-good at best, Matchbox isn't worth such uncertainty or a long wait. We have too many other good options in the Rockville-Bethesda-Silver Spring area to choose from that do honor their reservation times.
Though we had open table reservations, we had to wait 25 minutes past our time. Granted the restaurant was very busy. Service was terrible. We were basically ignored. We had to seek the help of other servers because ours was no where to be found. Service was beyond inattentive. Also, some of the food came out Luke warm, should have returned it but no server in sight. Overall not a good experience.
Breakfast Pizza needed Salt and pepper and was a little dry. Other than that it was good!
food is consistently good so we generally come back.
some concerns about this trip:
we got seated in the bar so it was louder than we'd like.
waiter was very nice & helpful, but he didn't speak loudly & seemed to be in a rush, so we had trouble hearing him a few times.
one of our drinks was terrible--not at all what was ordered, and much worse than first version of the same drink. was bad enough that I had to send it back, which I very rarely do.
Great service and fantastic food with friends! Every pizza we ordered from all meat to the more adventurous prosciutto and fig was simply delicious. The restaurant was warm due to the wood fire pizza ovens...just keep that in mind on hot summer days. Would definitely go again!
Made a last minute reservation of a holiday weekend. Had not trouble in scoring a table on the patio on a nice night for outdoor dining. My meal was fine. My companion felt her salmon in the salmon salad was a bit over done. Overall a pleasant experience and what we have enjoyed in the past at Matchbox.
Terrible service. It was a Thursday evening...and not crowded...but the server didn't Greet me until I physically walked around looking for him after 35 mins. And then the server looked to still be confused when I requested the check after just an appetizer after being there for 1 hour and 15 mins. Disappointing!!
As good as usual. We love this place. Good food (pear salad and wedge, both with salmon.)
It was wondwrful overall but I didn't get my points. I called 2 times. The manager said I was checked in and finished but I still didn't get points. It is a problem with the way they did it or with open table. I would still like to have my points.
The service was not that great and the pizza I ordered came out with burnt crust. The food runner tried to debate with me as to whether or not the crust was burnt which it clearly was. The waitress did offer a small house salad while I waited for them to prepare another pizza.
I am not impressed with the level of service since my last few visits.
Pleasant but noisy, to get a quiet table you have to ask for it...and there are a lot.
Food is great, good service and the best idea is to close at 11:30 pm saturdays.
The service was acceptable. Everyone was friendly and courteous. We did ask to eat outside and they said they were not serving outside but when we left the restaurant people were seated outside. That was a little bit of a disappointment because it was a nice day and we wanted to enjoy the outside
This location does not respect reservations. On multiple times have booked on OpenTable, only to arrive on time and be told there there is still a 15-30 min wait. Somehow this isn’t a problem any other restaurant that takes reservations has.
My daughter and I dined here last Mother's Day. We made a reservation but had to wait 10 minutes for a seat (it was a busy day for them). We devoured everything we ordered. The sliders, accompanied by the thin and crunchy pile of onion rings, are a always a hit. I really liked the shell of the appetizer tuna tacos (of course the filling was great too). And perhaps the highlight of our meal was the delectable chorizo burger. We also took home a delicious pizza that we built: ricotta base, mushrooms, bacon, and topped with mozzarella cheese. The meal was very satisfying and did not break the bank. And at the end of our meal, I felt we were somewhat being rushed out by the server, but no big deal since it was a school night anyway. We will still be happy to come back.
Excellent food, relatively quick service and great ambiance!
Only downside was that we waited to be seated much longer than we had to. They had us listed as a no-show and we were sitting with the buzzer which did not go off, nor was our name called. I went to enquire about the delay and discovered that they had us as a no-show. Food was great as per usual! Haven't been disappointed by the food yet.
First time there and will definitely be back. We had a large group (9) including kids and the service was very good and the food was of a very high quality. The dining highlights were the Ribs and the jalapeno cocktaiil.
It was good!
Great outdoor seating, and the mini burgers with onion rings are fantastic!
We've used Open Table on several recent occasions to reserve a table at Matchbox. Each time we've noticed that we are seated in the back room of the restaurant, which happens to be the least attractive part of the restaurant. Matchbox has a very nice ambiance, except for the backroom, which takes on the characteristic of a cheap chain restaurant. Our reservations have been made for times later in the evening; so, the restaurant wasn't busy and there were clearly plenty of tables in the nicer sections. Could be coincidence but it appears as if my Open Table reservations are be treated differently.
Always satisfied with both the food and service at Matchbox Rockville
We enjoyed our visit. Everything was fabulous!!! Our server did a great job.
Bryunch disappointing but service was great. I would not recommend for brunch. Service was excellent!!!
Always have a good experience. Veggie burgers are great. Can be noisy at times.
Busy place good food. Something for everyone
Energetic atmosphere. One if the best venues in rockville for enjoying friends and food.
