Matchbox - Rockville
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
A titan of a space, Rockville was modeled after a hunting lodge yet still manages to feel cozy.
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.

I love Matchbox Rockville as a meeting place for friends between MD and VA - it's a perfect spot: easy to get to, good food, consistently nice service.
A group of us wanted to eat in a safe and outdoor venue. We had no problem getting seated outside and the server taking care of our group was very attentive. Food was great (as usual) but only wished they would have turned on the radiant heat lamp since it was a chilly night with a slight breeze.
Food was fantastic! We had chicken sandwiches w pickles and some sort of egg-based spread. Delicious!
Nelson is a great waiter.
I asked for a quiet location for a business meeting for 8 people and we had a room to ourselves - PERFECT!
Great food and service always at this location
Food was delicious, as usual and the service- Liz was outstanding!
It was perfect! The food was tasty, the service was excellent. Everyone we encountered was professional and out to make sure we had a great time. They succeeded beautifully!
I was disappointed with the chicken and waffles. Chicken was unseasoned, waffles were hard and not hot. I get that you use hot syrup, but it did not help the waffles.
We had 2 different servers, nice but not attentive. We were always waiting.
Pizza was good.
Great food and quality service. Enjoyable dining experience.
Everytime we come here there service is terrible. Let me make it clear that it’s not specifically the server. They are understaffed but the staff that is there is clueless. A were there last month and it took 15 minutes for a server to even come by. Finally we had to go to the host stand to ask for a server. Last night we ordered the dynamite shrimp app and it was disgusting. It’s supposed to be fried shrimp but it came out soggy on top of that shrimp does not taste fresh it taste freezer burnt . Our server realized we didn’t eat much of it and offered to replace it with some thing but at that point we had started losing our appetite. We ordered pizza that came out fine but after we order dessert which was the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake and it was absolutely foul. There’s nothing fresh or appetizing about this dessert. We waited 10-15 minutes for our check to be picked up to pay eventually no one came around so I had to go walk around the restaurant to find our server. After last nights experience on top of the past few months of poor experiences here at this restaurant we will most definitely not be back. And I will not recommend this restaurant to any family or friends because of the quality of food and service. Zero out of 10 recommendation.
Food was very good quality but menu is reduced. Very few vegan or vegetarian options. Service was excellent. Prices are quite high.
Not enough of a variance for breakfast/brunch. Got the French toast and it was way too much bread for one person. Just ok experience.
Enjoyed the food. Server forgot the side salad so had to wait on it. Refill of drinks was slow. Over all good time though.
The food was excellent! The service was fast and our server Lori was the best!
Came in at 5:30 right before the dinner rush with a party of 8 including a toddler and baby. Fast, Clean and Attentive. Good times.
This is a great restaurant to patronize as you can always count on the food to be good and fresh. Some items might be considered a little pricey, but it's clear that is due to the quality of their menu items. They now have a nice outdoor seating space as well as indoor seating so you can choose what makes you comfortable. I'm looking forward to my next meal there.
This location has a lot of positives. The staff was generally attentive and friendly and the food tasted great. Those are big items a lot of places get wrong so kudos overall for that. However, there were a few negatives. One, the staff went AWOL a couple times leaving several folks at the table with empty glasses for up to 10 minutes. Second, the place might need a good deep cleaning as the fixture above our table was covered in a layer of dust/grime. Lastly, the outside was overgrown with weeds everywhere which gave off a were closed for good vibe. Despite these I think this location is a solid 3 star restaurant…
What impressed us the most was our server, Elaina. She was kind and professional. Her competence and care more than made up for the lack of ambiance.
I like the Rockville Matchbox because it's got good food and is a great location for me to meet friends from Maryland and Virginia.
Matchbox is a favorite spot for lunch. Two has the Salmon, one had the tuna poke bowl, and the pizza was enjoyed by all. Always great food and great service.
Food was great especially the pizza and service was on the mark
I really loved my waffle. We were in a both which was nice. It’s very well priced. we had a good time!
I was very disappointed with my visit to Matchbox. The menu was limited, the food was mediocre and overpriced, and we were seated at a table near a very noisy g
We went for the brunch box which they’ve discontinued apparently, so we ended up leaving. Now there’s brunch every day with $25 unlimited mimosas, which didn’t appeal to us since most of the brunch options were meat focused. The place is usually pretty good when we’ve been in the past.
I've always loved Matchbox, but the service was not what I was used to. I suspect it's because the wait staff might have been understaffed while we're still in the pandemic.
Went for a brunch date with my girlfriend. The food was excellent and I love the way that the bottomless mimosas are served by bringing the entire bottle of champagne and juice to leave at the table.
Ate on porch area. Great service . Allowed time to visit . I would have felt a little safer if tables were skipped or spaced out .
Food is always decent, but please make sure to refill my iced tea.
This place is always awesome! Best wine/beer selection, great customer service and the food is always excellent!
The food was room temperature when it got to our table.
Restaurant seemed very short staffed. Sliders were good. Pizza was fair.
Service as always on time and decent. However, crab cakes did not have much flavor. Seems the cooks changed or changed the recipe from previous visits.
Otherwise, good experience. Spicy pizza was spicy.
Excellent service & delicious food.
We have visited this place several times in the past and never had any issues. This last time we waited a long time for food to come out and two meals didn’t show up. The waiter said he’d check to see and came back and said some took the pizza and didn’t address the missing Cobb salad. Pizza came out about 5 minutes later but no salad. The rest of the table started eating and we asked again about eta on the missing salad. The waiter said that the kitchen was short staffed will check again. The salad finally came out just as everyone else was just about done with their meals. Nobody came over to apologize or offer to take it off the bill (which is pretty standard in other similar situations). We will not be going back here again!!!
Was there for an early lunch on a Sunday. The shrimp tempura appetizer was fantastic. Unfortunately the cinnamon rolls were a real disappointment. And our server was not very attentive. Usually service is much better.
I made the reservation a week in advance for myself, my mother and my sister. This was to celebrate my mother's birthday (July 24) and my sister's (Aug 2nd), who was visiting from California. It was a special night as we rarely get to spend time with my sister for her birthday, and my sister is rarely in town for my mom's birthday. It was a night for the three of us to have a great dinner (I love Matchbox), but we were disappointed. I put in "special requests" when I made my reservation to have two deserts, for birthdays since I wanted to surprise my sister, and my mother. Angelo our server was a great, sweet guy, but overwhelmed (not his fault as the restaurant was packed), so I went to the hostess to simply tell her about the two deserts with candles when our meal was done. She said "They both won't be free" and I said of course, I am happy to pay. We had not even received our meal when someone came over with the two deserts I chose, no candle, and at the wrong time. So the surprise was ruined, and the attitude was unwarranted from the person that delivered. I asked her to take them away until we had had dinner. I then told Angelo what happened, and he said he would ensure we would receive after the meal. He brought the deserts, no candles, so I had to ask for candles! Then as we sat with our plates after we had boxed up our leftovers, I received the bill, which was not itemized...it was just a $200.00 bill, so I asked another waiter walking by for an actual bill. I was shocked that the two deserts, which btw, where 1/4 of a normal slice of pie were $19.00 each! That is OUTRAGEOUS!. Yes, I guess I should have looked at the desert menu, but I eat out alot and never paid 19.00 for a half of a slice of pie. I didn't want to make a fuss, but let me tell you, while I am thrilled Matchbox is doing great business again, the service was way off, and clearly they did not read my special request. I am not requesting anything for free, just informing you of the evening.
It all started when the host tried to seat us at a table all the way in the back of the restaurant, in a moderately sized room beyond the bar. The room was already set for a large party that hadn't yet arrived, and, compared with the main dining room, lacked any ambiance. We asked to be seated at another table.
By the time another table was available, our guests arrived. We were taken to a room on the other side of the restaurant and offered a table in the middle of the room right next to the hallway to the kitchen. Rather than refuse this table as well, we decided to accept it.
For the next hour and a half, we were entertained by servers dropping and breaking dishes at least three times. Not the best ambiance for a restaurant!
On the positive side, the server was very attentive and responded quickly to our every request. The only issue: I ordered a Diet Coke and my friend's wife ordered a regular Coke. He gave me the regular Coke and her the Diet. He quickly corrected his mistake when we pointed it out to him.
As for the food ... when a restaurant bills itself as a "Vintage Pizza Bistro", you should order pizza. Unfortunately, my wife ordered Jumbo Fried Shrimp. I ordered the Cobb Salad with Grilled Chicken. She said the shrimp and fries gave her the burpees. The salad component of my dish was excellent, but the chicken was slightly dry.
I might try this location of Matchbox again, but I'd insist on being seated in the main dining room and I'd order a "Vintage Pizza".
If you decide to go, I hope your experience is better than mine!
Great service and food was delicious.
Terrible service but not really the server’s fault - they were very understaffed. Service was terrible but food tasted good. It took so long to get anything and even longer to get the bill.
