Matchbox - Rockville
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
A titan of a space, Rockville was modeled after a hunting lodge yet still manages to feel cozy.
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.
toasted brioche, pickles, onion straws
Crispy Chicken Sandwich
Deviled egg spread, shaved cabbage, pickles, mayo. Ask for it Nashville hot!
Jumbo Lump Crab Cake
roasted red pepper remoulade, coleslaw, old bay french fries
The food and service are good and eating outside is pleasant, even though you are basically in a parking lot.
We were SO disappointed in this visit. Matchbox was one of our favorite restaurants before the pandemic hit. We finally decided that we were comfortable enough to make a reservation (so we didn't have to wait in a congregated area) for outdoor dining (again, so that we could make a safer choice--MIL has lung disease, so we try not to take chances). Matchbox is 30 minutes from your house, but our son works nearby, and we had to drive him there anyway. Cool, decision made. Our reservation was at 7:15pm. We weren't able to request an outdoor table, but figured it wouldn't be a problem b/c we would arrive very early (had to drop son off at 5:30pm). So, we arrived at 5:45pm, and I went inside to explain that our reservation wasn't until 7:15pm, but could we please sit outside when it was time? Dude says, "Yes, I can do that" and makes a notation on the computer. Great. I go back to the car, and we decided to just play on our phones and kill time for an hour and 10 minutes. At 7:10pm, we go inside. Not soul in sight near the host stand and 4 parties waiting. OK, it's fine...we keep our distance. One girl arrives and sits a table, not acknowledging anyone else. Then a different dude arrives and grunts something at me. I say, "Hi! We have a reservation for 7:15 outside." He says (rather rudely), "It will be a 25-30-minute wait for outside, but I can seat you inside." I have a mask on, so maybe he misunderstood me, so I say, "Even for people with a reservation"? "Yes." He says (rudely). We left and won't be back. A few things:
1. What's the point of making an OpenTable reservation if you wait with everyone else?
2. When you arrive an hour early to request that you be seated outside, you shouldn't then have to wait an ADDITIONAL 25-13 minutes to then sit outside.
3. The pandemic sucks for everyone. It's hard on everyone, and I realize it's hard on restaurant workers. But others are doing it much better.
Excellent service and a lovely place for breakfast/lunch.
The service was awful! It took us over an hour to get our food. When it came it was all wrong and they had to send it back and get the order correct. They never even tried to comp anything or make us feel like they were trying to help us out in anyway. The chicken was undercooked and had to go back. I have been to the restaurant many times and this was a disaster of an experience.
Enjoyed the outdoor seating! Food delicious!
This is my first time back at this matchbox (or any restaurant, really) since dining inside restaurants has resumed. Everyone wore masks, except when eating, and the servers/waiters/bartenders all had on masks and even gloves. Our server was forgetful and did not check on us very often (when needed). We waited long times in between when we asked for something and when we received what we asked for (if we received it). It wasn't the best service, but it also seemed like there was a small number of staff for the number of patrons in the restaurant. Either way, I would still return as I felt comfortable and of course we loved our food and beverages.
Even though the menu is limited there were plenty of interesting choices. The service was attentive but not overbearing. The patio was lovely and we were well spaced from other diners. All in all it was a very lovely experience.
Ate on the patio and both ordered the Restaurant Week menu. Server was great in spite of the fact that things were busy. Food was great, especially the banana split!
Awesome space especially for social distancing. Great family restaurant.
Had a good experience. Food was delicious and service was good as well.
Not the greatest experience being that my husband got a glass of water with pink lip stains on it and our food was like warm. It felt like their restaurant week promotion was recycled food and we didn’t feel comfortable eating anything else to be honest, so we just left and didn’t bother to take our desert. This place has really gone down hill, and it’s more surprising because it’s COVID right now, we thought the sanitation would be better
Staff is working hard to give diners the best experience under the circumstances. Pizza was great!
Impressed with length taken to assure customers.
Although they were sold out of some food items ( no pizzas) and some beers, the service by our lovely waiter was friendly and attentive. All salads and sandwiches were excellent and delicious except the lobster roll , though fresh and tender, seemed a bit shy of actual lobster. Considering the price and the comparison to Luke’s Lobster or Clyde’s , it was disappointing.
It was great!!
This is my favorite place, enjoyed so much as usual.
Experience was relatively fine, but would have expected there to be fans in the outdoor under cover seating area like all of the outdoor restaurants we've been to have.
The service was excellent, as were most of the dishes we had. The spaghetti with a big meatball was strange. It had alfredo sauce on it with just a little marinara. I would not gmhave ordered this dish if I knew about the alfredo sauce. The blueberry french toast was delicious, as was the shirt rib rigatonu.
Very nice atmosphere and the food was delicious! Highly recommend.
Our waitress was amazing! Our food came out in a timely manner and was all correct and delicious.
Brunch was a great deal and our server Stephanie was fantastic!
Great food great service. We will come back again .
the service is above average and the food varies from good to fair. Their pizza is very good and the baby back ribs are also very good. My pasta dish was fair.
The noise level is high and they play the same sound track over and over.
We order some small burgers With a mozzarella cheese and they add American cheese
service was very slow
Food was great. Service could be better. Waited over 20 minutes despite having a reservation. Our server was less than competent. Actually he was terrible
dinner was great. and most importantly, our waitress really listened to some of our dietary restrictions and requests. food was good and a fun time was had by all.
Very slow service tonight and not at all busy.
Again surprisingly pleased with all of our food, from the giant meatball to the salmon salads with an excellent dressing, to the chicken sandwiches. The service was excellent. Her and fruit drinks are competitively priced. My only complaint is that the price of bottled wines is way over inflated.
Brunch small plates were good but seemed pricey at $31. I guess $3 mimosa makes unlimited food brunch and 2 drinks for under $40 ok but I wasn’t drinking. My issue was the waiter was one of the most unhelpful servers. We asked about the small plates - he proceeded no extras into. We asked if we could do a la carte - he said probably fir some items and then walked away giving no info. He cane back we asked again and he said all could be done ala carte “probably “. Then didn’t give prices or say if it Gould be full size not small plate.
Rest was decent we did small plates brunch and it was filling and interesting but service really turned us off.
service was awful and food was cold. the server did not share information and it was hard to figure out what the brunch was about.
The Chicken Alfredo was really good and the salmon was cooked to my liking. The server was quite friendly and efficient. The amount of food is a little less than average I think but not a deal breaker. Will definitely be back!
always family friendly and great service!
Sat in strange little knook next to the fireplace. It was uncomfortable and ackward.
Only go to this restaurant if you have children with you. They are everywhere and the ambiance is more of a McDonalds play area.
A great evening with friends at Matchbox in Rockville. The food was delicious - pizza, pasta and salad!
Great Brunch package! Fried Risotto was so good! Sliders are also recommended.
I was looking for a place to take my family for a brunch and was not impressed with our experience Sunday. the restaurant was almost empty and our service was very poor, the food was just ok and honestly we were disappointed. I spoke to the manager after we waited 15 m in to pay our bill and he did take a little off to make things better.
I wondered if they had a new chef because we have been there before and not felt this way.
I would not recommend the brunch.
The food was bad. Just BAD. The breading kept falling off the calamari. The fettuccini was super heavy and ended up making my husband's stomach sick. The steak salad was literally 4-5 pieces of steak thrown on some lettuce. And, although our server was wonderfully friendly, he disappeared towards the end such that it took us forever to get our bill. Oh! And, despite our reservation, it took us (and the 12 others who were freezing in the waiting area with us) nearly 20 mins to get seated. Never again.
