Matchbox - Rockville Ratings and Reviews
Went for a birthday dinner. This place is very popular, book early and don't bother walking in on Friday or Saturday. The ambiance is very nice but not refined, a relaxed feel. Service was very attentive and our waitress was super friendly and made the evening enjoyable. The food is out of this world, they have quite possibly one of the most well-conceived burgers I've ever had, and I know burgers. They do have french fries-not on the menu? -which I ordered on a friend's suggestion, but they were nothing to write home about. They have some creative daily specials and appetizers, but the sliders were small for the price if you don't like onion straws. The drinks were tasty and well balanced, and the Trio dessert was amazing! Family-friendly.
A client and I enjoyed wonderful salads in a corner booth where we could hold a business converation while dining. The portions were between "more than adequate" and "extravagant" considering the quality of the salads (Apple Pear and Tuna. The presentation of each dish was superb more in keeping with a fine 5 star restaurant.
We did not experience the bar area or outside dining but the restaurant was full. Still, we were given prompt attention and taken to our booth quickly and efficiently. (Reservations are very important here!)
The service was impeccable. No thoughtless interruptions or questions by wait staff which happens in so many restaurants today. A definite "return many times" for me.
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary over lunch (outside). However, after I mentioned that it was our anniversary to the hostess, nothing was said to us at our table. We did not receive a complimentary dessert/appetizer for example. This was disappointing.
Dissapointing for foodies. Do not accept seating in the extremely loud inside bar on Friday night. (We were told that if we rejected the table there would be a wait. Our reservation for 2 was at 8pm. ). We did not get adequate attention from servers because we could not be seen or heard through the crowded, noisy bar. No offer of condiments for sliders until 1/3 of the way through the appetizer. Sliders and brioche werena bit dry. No offer of water refills with a spicy pizza entree. We rushed to get out quickly because we could not hear ourselves speak.
I have been hearing about Matchbox from my friend who works in DC and then from my many friends who had already been to the new Rockville location. It was everything I had heard. The food was very good, service good, atmosphere pleasant. A tad pricey for soup and a salad, so don't think I'll be a "regular" but I enjoyed it.
Having made a reservation via Open Table, we were seated immediately, bypassing dozens of customers on a wait list. Our server may have been fairly new -- while he had a good grasp of specials, he forgot to put in one of our entree orders, and was a little slow about keeping drinks refilled. By way of apology, we enjoyed a complimentary dessert. We tried some of the "bistro" entrees and they were good, but it seems that Matchbox is definitely more of a casual pizza & sliders kind of place. I'd return there, for pizza or other fun food, but probably will spend my "nice dinner" dollars elsewhere.
Tina was our waitress and she was very knowledgeable and helpful. She knew the menu and could recommend based on our requests. She was very attentive as well.
Drinks were weak at best - but the beer was good!
Expensive for pizza but a pleasant dining experience overall.
Going early means lots of little kids, most of them uncontrolled. Have never asked for a kid free table area, but will in the future. Certainly not a fine dining experience, but when you want to talk to your family, it's nice to be able to hear what they have to say.
Overall, Matchbox Rockville was good but not awesome, especially given the long period one had to plan ahead to reserve a decent table for Sunday night prime time. The dining room was OK. Three of the 4 walls and the floor were bare. Some additional decorations like tapistries or rugs on the walls would help dampen the sound and give diners something besides wood and bricks to look at. The pizza was very good but not fabulous. The toppings were very fresh and nice but the crust, especially the outer rim, lacked the yeasty, chewy character that I really love. More like eating a flatbread. The sliders, on the other hand, were to die for. Next time -- and there will be a next time -- we'll go for burgers.
We've been four times now and I have to say that it's a disappointment. Great menu, but the food is often overloaded with salt and dishes are as good as they sound on paper. It's been excellent once and okay the other times. The worst part, though, is the NOISE. Go with a small group only or you won't be able to hear anyone else at your table. (DO NOT sit at the large round tables for that reason.) Upstairs is a tad better, but overall, it's deafening in there. Especially on a busy weekend.
The service was good. We got there 15 minutes before our reservation and we were seated within 5 minutes of our arrival. The service was friendly and expedient. Although the food was very good, I wondered how they could get it to us so quickly and keep it fresh and good. We were not constantly hassled with "how is everything?" questions. I would definitely go back. My kids want to go back as well.
I met a friend that I had not seen in awhile and it was a perfect spot to meet and catch up. We took awhile to order and there was no pressure from our waiter. I had the hanger steak salad. It was good, but at $12, a bit overpriced in my opinion. I will probably return to try a full meal.
Took my mother there for lunch which was very good. We had the spinach salad , shrimp&grits, and sliders all were very very tasty. However our waiter knocked over all our beverages all over my mother and she absolutely soaked. I had to call the manager over and request a complimentary lunch. Needless to say they lacked customer service!
