Matchbox - Rockville
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.
The best seat in the house may be the elevated mezzanine, but everyone is treated to soaring views of the glowing wood wall, reclaimed from a New York State barn built in the early 1900’s.
Below, the bar hints at its former life as a Douglas fir, once suspended up in the 25-foot ceiling. Outside, the shaded fire pit bar is an ideal spot for drinks for you and thirteen of your friends.
Exposed pipes, warm reclaimed timber walls, cool concrete and steel make for an attractive place to gather.

Nice nice nice
I had a horrible and I mean very bad spinach salad. How can you screw that up?
The spinach was. Inedible. It tasted medicinal I did t eat it and wasn’t going to order anything else.
With all the restaurants in Montgomery County, I see no reason to return. 🤮
Have visited several times and have always enjoyed.
"energetic" noise level = difficult to have a conversation. Ribs overcooked the meat dry, salmon small, cornbread excellent, salad very good. Cool breeze cooled the food quickly.
We love this place, tasty food, good atmosphere, pleasant service:)
Met with friends that we have not seen in a while. Loved the great selection of food and beverages on the menu and the wait staff was amazing. Thanks for a wonderful experience!
Really good. Pizza was good, crust was tasty and thin. Toppings fresh and plentiful. Salad fresh. Calzone was really good, well cooked and tasty.
Great and awesome food
Quality food, service and environment.
The food was tasty and the restaurant looked nice. The music was too loud and my order was not right. Overall I would recommend but not if you want to have intimate conversation.
Our server was fantastic, but our food was not good. Very basic items like chicken and waffles with no flavor at all, not worth the cost. The cinnamon rolls were inedible.
Saturday brunch was good. Cinnamon buns not worth the money. Apple pear salad was superb as usual.
Matchbox is an amazing restaurant. Good food good service and the Environment yo just have a good time with friends or with family.
we showed up 30 minutes early from our reservation time with a small amount of people gathered standing by for a 10-15 minute wait time only to be told that we wouldn’t be able to sit until our actual reservation time.... after what i had believed to be an understanding we would be sat in sequence with everyone else, my family and i saw people that were in line behind us getting sat. i questioned this only to be told that she rang our buzzer and we never responded....great! this is going to be a great dinner... then my wife’s pepperoni pizze came out charred. i get brick oven but burnt so much you can’t tell the difference between crust and cheese and the pepperoni are little black discs? so much was a nice quick bite to eat on a friday night!
This restaurant is located in a nice area and seating both indoors and outdoors is very nice.
The food was delicious and the service from our waitress was very good. I like a waiter/waitress who has good knowledge of the food that is fixed at the establishment and she was able to really answer our questions. I have been here several times and plan to come back in the future and bring family and friends!
The build out of this place is incredible. They simply said yes to everything and had a limitless construction budget. Clean and beautiful. AND! There is a paper towel dispenser by the bathroom doors so you can take one and open the door and not touch the pooped door handle. Perfect idea.
Service: 6 Stars. Wish i could remember our servers name, she was incredible. She is a mom with 2 boys, 3 and 10, I remember that. Attentive and inviting and made us feel extremely comfortable.
Food: Everything was totally average or subpar quality.
Cinnamon buns are trash. They were hardly sweetened and the cream cheese frosting was terrible and possibly spoiled. Like eating old burnt bread ends.
Egg white vegetable scramble was detritus. DETRITUS. Sloppy, watery egg whites, vegetables cooked with NO seasoning; had to ask for salt and pepper. The bread that came with it was soggy but didn’t have a buttery taste. So what on earth made it soggy? On the bottom of the skillet was a 1/5 inch of cooking oil. Was that supposed to be the seasoning? Was it someone’s first day on the line? Drain it.
Kids brunch meals say they come with one side so my 4 year old got scrambled and sausage. Nobody said they would scramble the sausage into the eggs. Well they did. Not a big deal but it’s a kids meal and luckily my kid isn’t picky but damn dudes, DEFINITELY put that on the menu. How many times is it sent back for that reason?
Sausage itself is garbage. They don’t use any binding tubing so the sausage is just a pile of meat that looks unappealing. Some parts of the sausage had a ton of fennel seasoning in it and other parts had a ton of red pepper seasoning. Awkward eating.
Chicken and waffles. How can this dish be made average? It’s basically dessert with fried chicken on it! It’s found in dives all over the south and is known for its simplicity and decadentness. At Marchbox it’s semi-bland and we left it unfinished after all 6 people had a bite. No one wanted seconds.
Our server ‘Quinn’? Was the best server we’ve ever had at Matchbox. He made our evening really nice. He was happy, friendly, attentive and prompt.
Food was delicious and the Matchbox Mule was fantastic.
Really great evening
Maddy was great. It was very busy and were outside by the fire pit (not on).
Food was excellent (great pizza & salads) and drinks were on point. The Tempranillo was was excellent for the price.
We had hoped for no lights and the fire pit in.... alas it has to be colder.
All in all a great night!
Will be back!
Love Matchbox! We go at least once a week! Cucumber-Jalapeño margarita is amazing. I had the mahi mahi for the 2nd time, amazing. And they brought back Coffee and Donuts!
Normally this is a reliable win for us. Great food and a laid back atmosphere. This time however, I was very disappointed. I ordered the seared tuna and the fish I recived was not at all fresh. I kept the dish and pushed the fish to the side so I didn't spoil the gun for everyone else. Also all of pr water glasses were dirty. I'll give it another go but this lat visit was not what I expect from them.
The food is always good, as is the service. This location needs to be refreshed after a lot of wear and tear. Also found it odd that they sat us in a back section (double-sat the waitress who already had a big party) when there were clearly other parts of the restaurant open. Will know for next time to make sure to ask if they bring us to the back section behind the bar to go elsewhere.
Good service. Good food. Lots of gluten-free options
Very accommodating for kids. Came to same restaurant about 2 years ago, and disappointed that no changing table for baby in men's room; this time saw the changing table (pleased as expecting another baby).
Always a great gastronomic experience. Food delicious, prices affordable and staff friendly
We were seated next to a screaming baby and when we asked for another table, we were given some grief by the person who was showing us to the table. We had reservations and arrived early. There were other tables available. When I asked to speak to a manager, we were given a different table.
Always used to enjoy going there. I chose it specifically for my birthday celebration with good friends.
The food was terrible. Everything was extremely salty. The sliders came out cold with cold onion strings on top. Food just was not up to the quality I experienced in the past. Sorry to say this will probably be my last visit.
Come dessert time, the waitress disappeared and forgot about us when we asked her to return in one minute to take our order.
Good Sunday brunch menu, large portions fair price. I did not look at non-brunch items.
We went to this restaurant on 8/7 for a friend's birthday, which I mentioned to our waitress as soon as we were seated. They forgot our order & 30 minutes later after we flagged someone down, we were served cold burgers. We had to wait for another order of warm burgers to come out, and then after dessert, we waited over 30 minutes for someone to bring us the bill. Finally we gave up & went to the front desk to request a bill and offer payment. Despite a clear explanation that we had a gift certificate we wanted to use first, then the balance on a credit card, the full amount was charged to my card. Later, they said that this would be corrected but almost 24 hours later, the full charge is still showing up on my card & no manager ever came over to apologize for this 2.5 hour ordeal.
While the food was amazing as always, the service was severely lacking. Our waiter took way too long each time he was needed. He did a great job greeting us immediately, but then disappeared. Our water was delivered nearly 15 minutes later by another person. We then had to continue to wait to order. This waiting continued throughout the meal. Very dissatisfied with the service. My friend pointed out this happens each time we sit by the bar. We would have hoped it was better due to the fact that the waiter knew it was a special occasion (birthday).
The service was excellent. The food was tasty. We were seniors and would prefer less noise.
Our waitress was horrible. He took are drink order and it took him 15 minutes to come back and take our food order. I order a patron margarita and it taste like water. He was doing so much talking in the kitchen with other co-workers it took forever for him to bring our food. I will say the food is absolutely delicious. Just make sure you have a good waitress.
Lost its luster
Not kept up well
Needs a manager’s touch
Great food and service!
Our server was very helpful and friendly.
I had called several times to add to the reservation i had made. Very accommodating however when we got there the table was not ready. Almost as if we didnt have a reservation, and we were a large party.
As for the service of the food. We waited probably a half hour after ordering to get out food and a good 20 minutes for the appetizers.
When my daughter got her meal it was comlpetely wrong even though the server repeated it and i also repeated it to the server (she does not eat meat and asked for egg sandwich without the bacon and sausage... and when they took it back im pretty sure they just took off the meat... she has been a pescatarian all her life so she does NOT eat meat)
And unfortunately it was WAY to loud in there, the music and the people.
Love Matchbox! Never disappointed. My friend and I had the Mahi Mahi and it was amazing! My husband and another friend had the ribs-a very generous portion. Cornbread is addicting. Our favorite Coffee and donuts back on the menu! Matchbox is a no-brained for us. Been enjoying meals here since they opened. Always love seeing consistency in staff and Kojo’s welcoming smile!
The service was good, which is important with two children under 4.
It was a great atmosphere for an informal business meeting.
Matchbox was a regular meeting spot. Great pizza, good burgers, enjoyable appetizers, made it ideal for a group that volunteers nearby. Unfortunately a cheesy sound system, running something akin to music, at volume suitable for a rock concert, make the restaurant unpleasant to occupy. Repeated requests to reduce the volume were ignored. Miller's is closer, serves the same food (actually a better burger), and turns of the music on request.
Catching up with old friends who were in the area for the All Star game. They loved the decor and feel of the place. The pizza was a big hit!
