About Matchbox - Rockville
A titan of a space, Rockville was modeled after a hunting lodge yet still manages to feel cozy.
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.
The best seat in the house may be the elevated mezzanine, but everyone is treated to soaring views of the glowing wood wall, reclaimed from a New York State barn built in the early 1900’s.
Below, the bar hints at its former life as a Douglas fir, once suspended up in the 25-foot ceiling. Outside, the shaded fire pit bar is an ideal spot for drinks for you and thirteen of your friends.
Exposed pipes, warm reclaimed timber walls, cool concrete and steel make for an attractive place to gather.

Matchbox - Rockville Ratings and Reviews
We dined for Valentines. Our last visit was disappointing but we decided to give matchbox another try and I’m glad we did. We had a nice table, wonderful server (Stephanie) and a delicious meal. The kitchen as a little slow but that was understandable given the holiday. Stephanie was super attentive and very friendly. I loved the mini burgers and salad I ordered. My husband loved his chicken sandwich.
My good gf and I met for a late lunch. Our server and food were both amazing. Second time I've been to Matchbox, though first time to Rockville location. Both experiences were excellent. I was a bit sad that on my 2nd visit, they had taken their crave-worthy, left me salivating for days lemony mustardy salmon off the menu, but one can only pray they bring it back (or give me the recipe!!!). I highly recommend Matchbox and hope it continues its tradition of great food and service despite being a chain of sorts.
As usual, the food was very good, but unfortunately we had a very bad experience on this visit. We were placed in a back room behind the bar and it looked to be used for large parties. There was a very nice large group next to us, but across the way was a large group with several out of control loud small children.
We asked to be moved very early on when the noise was getting out of control, but were told there were no other tables available and there was nothing that could be done. Throughout the evening there were several times where we found our conversation more about the other table than our own. It was just not the way to spend a Saturday night out. Not sure I would return based on how the situation was handled.
I had a great experience at Matchbox. The food was excellent and not too expensive; the service was great; and the ambience was perfect. I had the spinach salad with grilled salmon and it was perfect. Matchbox is now one of my favorite restaurants. I highly recommend it.
I took a large group of my staff to lunch here. We had a reservation, which when I needed to change it from 4 to 8 people, the hostess was very willing and able to assist and make the change. The food was really delicious- everyone loved their entrees, and most of us had delicious leftovers.
This visit was not like in the past. My food was terrible. I ordered the Holy Grail Pizza. It arrived with the crust burnt... not light, brown... but BLACK. The basil looked like it had sat under the heating lamp for a while. It was wilted and lifeless. The sauce looked like it was dumped straight from a can of tomato paste. What also surprised me was that the restaurant was not busy. I was there on Super Bowl Sunday at 11am. The place was very quiet. Boo, Matchbox... you are better than that.
Despite calling ahead and indicating this on my reservations online, there was no high chair or booster seat there when we got to our table. We had to wait until our table was 'ready' yet they still didn't have the proper chairs or the kids dough ready as I had asked when I called 15 minutes prior to arrival.
Due to confusion at the front of the restaurant, another couple ended up getting seated at the table that had been reserved for us. I complained after waiting 20 minutes, and the problem was cleared up quickly. Also received a free appetizer personally delivered by the manager. The restaurant was crowded (it was Saturday nite) and everyone was very busy. But the food was good, and once we were seated the service was OK, although our waitress was busy with another large party. I would recommend the Matchbox for its good food, but best to avoid peak hours.
We love Matchbox and never disappointed in the food... but on this last visit, we had a 5:30 dinner reservation, and when we arrived at 5:00 to meet friends at the bar for drinks before dinner, we were told by the hostess that we HAD to sit down then! If we wanted to wait till 5:30, it would cancel our reservation, and we might have to wait longer for a table. Huh? If our reservation is at 5:30, why would we need to sit down at 5:00 or lose our table? Doesn't make sense. The staff were actually quite rude about it.
Everything were excellent except the table that was reserved for me was not comfortable for my party and I ended up had to swap for another one that fitted better ! I thought I can get a better table since I had reserved weeks prior as the restaurant had some many better choices !! A bit disappointed.
I took a client there for lunch. I had requested a quiet booth. The place was not full, but the hostess tried to give us a table in the back next to a large group. We asked to be re-seated and were. This is not the first time. They don't have a big attention span there.
The food was good, but the 3 courses arrived to fast, one after the other, before we had finished the previous course. We felt rushed for no apparent reason.
Went for Restaurant Week lunch special. Slight wait for reserved table at 1pm but ok. 3 burger appetizer ordered as medium rare and medium. Both came well done. Service VERY slow. Start to finish was over 2 hours. Check came wrong (with added entree on bill). Visit not entered on our rewards account.
We went to Matchbox on Saturday night and it was very packed. Although we had a reservation, we were told it would be a 10 to 15 minute wait. We tried to have a drink at the bar and were met with a very rude bartender. She ignored us completely several times and then told us she would get us a drink but first had to check on her other tables as she was waiting on the tables in the bar as well. A few minutes later, she handed us menus and told us we had better order because they were so busy they were had shut down the kitchen. We inquired with the hostess and she said that wasn't true and oddly, we were immediately seated. My husband is not eating carbs and requested that the potatoes for his salmon be replaced with asparagus. His salmon arrived with no seasoning, just the salmon and the asparagus. When we asked, we were told that you could not do substitutions. We will not be back.
