Matchbox - Rockville
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
A titan of a space, Rockville was modeled after a hunting lodge yet still manages to feel cozy.
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.

Always love Matchbox, it's realiably good, and I love the ambiance. My hubby and usually share a large pizza: half Matchbox meat for him, and either the Cremini mushroom or fig and proscuitto for me.
Well, it was my special needs adult child's birthday - waited FOREVER for service a smile and drinks. Everything took forever it seemed. The place is waaaaay too loud but pretty. Drinks took so long we almost left. The birthday dessert was dropped off with a lit candle and then the server just took off. Wow, no happy birthday greetings, no nothing. Honestly, the guy who sat us was the nicest guy and full of smiles. Sadly, never again.
We waited for food to come out, other customer that come after us got their food before us
The pizza we ordered was saturated with the sauce to the point of making the dough chewy plus it was not cooked all the way the temperature of the food was cool
We had order as per the suggestion of our server a split pizza with the same sauce as the base for the whole pie when she brought it to the table it was not that way and when we realized and call her she immediately said and I quote “yes the sauce is wrong right?”
All I can think is if you knew it wasn’t right why bring it to the table?
I will make a recommendation for the management that appeared missing in action please train your servers and expediter to correct issues before they are serve to the guest
They made a second pizza which was serve for sure at the right temperature but the amount of the garlic sauce made it not eatable
We will not be back again great disappointment as we have been there before and the food quality was much better
Food was excellent. However, NEVER sit at the table for 8 on the 1st floor between the bar and bathrooms—it is a service wasteland. Takes forever to get the staff’s attention.
Food was great. We tried the unlimited brunch. Great and large selection. The only thing is one of the servers may have forgotten us when the place started to get busy. We also noticed check did not reflect our orders. It didn’t matter at that time since everything is included. We were just figuring out how many plates we have ordered. There’s also some mistakes in our order. There was additional items we have to send back coz we didn’t order them and there’s 1-2 dishes that were forgotten. I like the food here so I will still come back.
Went for brunch and apparently they do unlimited small plates as their only brunch option. Was seated at a high top at the bar, which we come to find out is self serving seats (though a reservation was put in) and may explain the poor service received. This was our first time eating at this establishment and were not informed how brunch ordering actually worked. We had to ask to get some of the food we ordered and it took requesting coffee 3 times before actually getting a cup. If you sit at the high tops, be prepared to be forgotten and hopefully don’t come in on a time crunch since it took over 2.5 hours to get through the meal for 2 people. Majority of the time was spent waiting for service.
The restaurant has A new brunch “all you can eat” small plates menu, and no other option. Not really practical and prevents me from ordering a regular portion of my faves. And with kids, kinda tough to get value from the drinks part of that which Is of course a big part of this value. Additionally, our food came out pretty slowly, some dishes were hot and perfect and others had a cold poached egg on top. Pretty unacceptable. Also Pretty surprising from this restaurant, which historically has always come through with excellent service and hot delicious food. Never got a refill offered for my coffee. Server ghosted us with about 15 minutes left
Please if you stick with this brunch small plates menu, continue to offer the regular menu too. And work on the food temperature and service.
Our server was amazing...food was great
Nice informal meal after two day working meeting.
Loved the food! I had lightly fried chicken, my boyfriend had chicken pasta and my two friends had salmon.. The service was good. My only complaint is that it's noisy there and we had to really raise our voices to hear one another.
We had a large group of 10 and they were able to accommodate us which we appreciated
Had a great office lunch for 9 there. Server was wonderful, service was quick, food was excellent. A little noisy, but that is the only thing I could find wrong with our visit there.
We had a party of 10. Our service started out very well.
However, when the food arrived everyone rec'd their food except for one person, me!
I was told it was burned. I had to wait an additional 10-minutes for my food to arrive. When my food arrived I asked for a drink refill. I did not get my drink refilled until after I finished my meal....
When the check arrived I noticed that 20% was already added to the bill. I reluctantly paid.
Excellent food and service. The food was very tasty and we did everything vegetarian today. The brick oven pizza is some of the best I’ve tasted!!
My only complaint was each time we ordered a drink from the bar menu it took us between 15-25 minutes to get it. I could have made it myself. How long does it take to get a glass of wine? The bar wasn’t even that crowded. Still the waiter and staff were friendly and provided great service.
Love the crab and avo!!! We sat outside and it was perfect.
I love Matchbox, come there often and always order the same thing. We had an inexperienced waitress who was a little difficult to understand. She was okay and DID NOT ruin the experience for us. But, just not up to your usual standards,
We went at brunch time, but they wouldn't let us order any brunch items unless we agreed to pay $33/person for the unlimited brunch, which isn't even a buffet - they just bring out small plates one at a time and hope that you get hungry before you eat too much. So we ordered a pizza instead, and it was obvious they have cheaped out on their ingredients recently - we ordered the same pizza we have enjoyed before (prosciutto and fig) and it was awful this time. Such a shame that this place has become such a blatant, customer-unfocused money grab.
The ribs were great but we ordered the scallop special entree which sounded ( and was in fact ) very delicious. But 4 scallops for $32. That was crazy. Wouldn’t have ordered if know there were only 4!!!
I had to call twice afuera lunch to get my points on opentable
Great food but the noise level is a little loud when you are trying to hold a conversation.
Great brunch option. Unlimited small plates including small pizzas. The dishes are made to order and taste very fresh. Keep in mind though that most dishes are very egg and meat heavy. I especially loved the avocado toast, short rib hash, and biscuits. The lemon pound cake french toast is as sweet as it sounds. The pineapple ginger mimosa is DELISH! I will definitely be back.
The only thing I would suggest is that dessert menu need to cater to people who are lactose intolerate. Add sorbet to the dessert menu. Good flavors of sorbet.
I have been there before for lunch and thought what I had was much better. This time we did the unlimited brunch. most of the items we ordered were good, but not outstanding. They do have alot of unique items on the menu. The best one was the lemon pound cake French toast. It was pretty sweet though. I think it is better to go for the pizza or regular menu later in the day, but if you can spend 31.50 on brunch, give it a try.
The food was great and the environment was pleasant. We enjoyed the pizza!
When you order a salad and an entree, you should be asked if you want the salad with the meal.
For some reason the food was only mediocre. The pizza was barely warm and somewhat dry. Server was great . The crab cake was good and the artichoke dip was ok but not great. And I would’ve preferred something like pita chips to go with it
We didn't really test the cuisine since we all ordered pizza. It was nice to be seated right away and the service was pretty good.
Matchbox - Rockville is a fun place to eat with family. Menu has kid-friendly items, a must for our busy family. Oddly, it has seemed cool and drafty the past two times we have visited. During one visit, we were seated under a robust ventilation duct that was kicking out cold air while maybe 40 degrees outside....we refused to sit down and were moved somewhere else. However, despite that the pizza is good and they have a decent drink selection. Other menu items are good too, especially their salads.
The kitchen was way backed up. The wait for food was very long. The server was nice and gave us a coupon for the next visit... it wasn’t his fault it took forever. I love the food at Matchbox, but they need to work on timeliness. I went there another time and it was 15 minutes before a server came by. Otherwise, I’ll go back cause I love the food.
Larger than expected restaurant with casual food and an all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch. Very good service and wait staff brought food in a timely manner, stayed observant to our needs without hovering or interrupting our conversation and were very polite. Cocktails were very good and food delicious.
Don’t go for brunch. Food takes over an hour to come and when it does eventually get there, it’s stone cold. For $30 a person, it’s a rip-off. The staff cheered at 2:30 when they stopped seating people for brunch, that shows how ill equipped they were to handle it.
The staff was nice and accommodating (we had an infant in tow) but the meal itself was underwhelming and we were still hungry after splitting a large pizza and a salad. I prefer Pete’s or Rustico to this popular chain.
My visit to Matchbox was at lunch time in the indoor patio area, lots of good energy because March Madness was on. The food was good, the waitress was very good the experience overall was good.
Make the Shrimp and Grits an entree!
The food was great; however the server took a while to get our pizza. She said it was burnt so she had it re-done waited too long for the pizza to finally arrive (almost over an hour).
Very rude servers and very bad service. Avoid the place if possible. Many other similar places around with better service experience.
Can’t get enough of this place ! But people sitting next to us has kids running around
The food was phenomenal as was our waiter. Normally it would have been 5 stars but you lost two stars because the mini trio appetizer was not on the menu - a HUGE bummer because it was SO good!
My friend and I enjoyed items from the standard brunch menu. It was tasty! My only complaint is that the server (not our waiter) who brought out our order placed it in front of customers at a different table. Then when she brought it to us, she mixed up the orders. I think it's careless of the kitchen and waitstaff.
